Idea: consolidate the GW lemmy communities

cross-posted from: https://piefed.social/c/guildwars2/p/2134144/idea-consolidate-the-gw-lemmy-communities

So - with GW3 on the horizon and the announcement of support for all 3 games I started to wonder about the lemmy communities.

With lemmy and piefed being not as big as the other place, I came to terms with the fact that highly specified communities don't really make sense as those are a niche within a niche and so get limited activity.

That said, I was always glad to see GW2 having a relatively active comm and I'm a little concerned about what GW3 might do with it. Also, since it's GW2 specific it's not a great place to hype up GW3. And while I see GW3 community exists, there is all in all 2 subs on there.

So I'd like to propose having a central, Guild Wars Franchise community where all 3 games would be discussed. This would make thr community more active, while also giving people idea what's happening in the other games.

Thoughts?

PS: I thought I'd also directly tag @[email protected] here, as a moderator of both GW1 and GW2 comms and also sole poster in GW3 comm (which makes me think you made it as well?) to also ask you directly what you think about the idea. I don't have any experience with this so maybe you will tell my why it's not a good idea?

Missing PoI categories?

So I had to go to a notary office recently and wanted to find some near me on CoMaps... but it was very ineffective because it only found those that had "notary" in the name. There was no such category to be found.

And yet, OSMand has "notary office" category, and many more that don't show up in CoMaps (and I'm talking searching for categories, not just the list). Does CoMaps only feature some categories, but not all?

I tried also looking at Archeological site as another example and while there were PoIs categorized as such but can't select the category to see all PoIs from this category on map.

Am I missing something?

Pagan Survivals, Superstitions and Popular Cultures in Early Medieval Pastoral Literature

cross-posted from: https://feddit.dk/post/15686288

A good source of folklore and surviving pagan practices are church documents that describes practices evident in pre-christian Roman and Greek sources, archeological evidence, and early modern folkloric sources.

This book is the longest description I have read of this type of source. It discusses to what extend these texts can be read as actual evidence of existing practices, or just per verbatim repetitions of existing church texts. It never really concludes anything but mostly agrees that these really are evidence of existing practices.

It is split in multiple sections for different types of practices.

Old Saxon Paganism: Indiculus Superstitionum et Paganiarum

cross-posted from: https://feddit.dk/post/15202576

Article detailing an 8th century description of Saxon paganism. Sadly, the full text is lost, but we have the index of the text and that is enough to enlighten us about the existence of many practices described in other sources, and many that existed until recently or even still exist.
