Hopsital

I've never tried this, but advice I've seen online is if your doctor won't order testing, ask them to note in your chart that they are declining testing. Apparently the implicit threat of a lawsuit if they're wrong is enough to kick at least some of them into CYA mode.

Nobel committee unable to reach prize winner who is ‘living his best life’ hiking off grid

The Nobel committee also hit a roadblock trying to reach Brunkow – both researchers are based on the US West Coast, which is nine hours behind Stockholm – but eventually got ahold of her...

In 2020 the Nobel committee had similar difficulties in contacting the winners of the prize for economics. When Bob Wilson’s phone rang in Stanford in the middle of the night, he unplugged it so the committee had to call his wife instead.

When the committee couldn’t reach his fellow winner, Paul Milgrom, either, Wilson had to go and wake him up.

This is annoying to me. Is there seriously no better way than to call older people in the middle of the night and then act surprised when they are not immediately available?

Masculine Policy: The GOP’s Plan To Outlaw ‘Porn’ And Suspend The First Amendment

Reply in thread

It is mind boggling to me that in the year 2023 we're complaining about porn, LGBT existence, and fucking book content. Isn't this what we were laughing at 20 years ago?

It's easy to forget because of how quickly the cultural zeitgeist shifted when it finally did, but the early 2000s was still very homophobic. Watching pretty much any comedy from that era reminds you of just how common the punchline to jokes was just, "teehee they're gay."

UnitedHealthcare is mad about "In Luigi we trust" comments under a doctor’s viral post about coverage cancelled during surgery

“On the morning of the surgery, your office incorrectly ordered an inpatient hospital stay when you meant to order an outpatient observation stay,” the letter said. “Had you not made that error, UnitedHealthcare would not have reached out.”

Potter is holding her ground. In her Instagram post sharing the letter, she doubled down. “I recently shared a video after I was asked to call United Healthcare from the operating room to answer administrative questions about the patient who was having surgery to treat breast cancer. Despite my efforts, they denied her stay,” she said. “I had requested an overnight stay for medical reasons. This was not an error on my part.”

Fucking cartoon supervillain shit.

These Texans turned in a voter registration form. So why weren’t they on the rolls?

I live in Texas and when my partner changed addresses for his voter registration, it took like 2 fucking months. It was wild. He was just about to send a new one in when we got the confirmation card in the mail finally.

I early voted yesterday and the poll worker nearly clicked that I did not have a sufficient photo ID because I was using my passport. Thankfully another poll worker intercepted right before she did because who knows what the fuck happens in the system when that button is pressed even once for you. 12-hr waiting period so I have "sufficient time" to retrieve my "proper" id? Getting on some purge list going forward for "suspicious voter activity"? I wouldn't put anything past them... And, of course, I was only using my passport because I thought they might hassle me for my license address not matching my registration. They instead got hung up on the fact that my passport doesn't have an address... Welcome to the South!

Pepper posting

My takeaway from the Dr. Pepper Museum is that it's some weird indoctrination shit for school kids about the virtues of the free market and limiting government regulation. It's fucking weird and you better believe they shoe-horn that shit into every exhibit. It used to be called the Dr. Pepper Museum & Free Enterprise Institute but looks like they may have decided to rebrand since I was there a few years ago. Maybe they realized saying the quiet part outloud in their name was turning people off lol.

https://drpeppermuseum.com/free-enterprise-is-alive-and-well/

What you may not know is that Free Enterprise Education has always been at the heart of our institution as part of our Free Enterprise Institute. From the very beginning, the aim has been to not only collect and display soft drink artifacts, but also to use industry as a model to demonstrate the power of our economic system.

Does it feel like the fediverse is exclusively used by older tech nerds?

At work I've been thrust into a support function for some random system (I'm in analytics) and one of the roles I work with is fairly entry level, so lots of younger folk. I have been floored by some of the basic-ass shit I've walked them through. (Like explaining that you can copy and paste the url into a browser if the link isn't clickable for whatever reason. Also had to clarify what url meant--is this not a common term anymore?) I had just assumed that because they're younger and grew up with the internet, they'd smoke the hell out of me. But I guess interfaces are so streamlined these days many got away with never having to learn basic troubleshooting the same way I did as a millennial.
