This might help explain the spectacular launch of Threads

They’re not creating a shadow account, you’re literally logging in with your instagram account.

What this post is implying, is that the user numbers are just existing instagram accounts, which doesn’t make sense because in that case they’d have 2 billion users within the first second.

You can follow/request to follow before the user has actually "created" the account, so they’re lying about which users have done that already, not about how many users they actually have.

Pretty sure they’re not. I mean those are instagram accounts, but only those who enabled threads. It’s also at 93 million now.

Why is it so hard to believe that people download the app and try it out? It’s easy to do, users don’t have to create a new account, the app is number one on the App Store, they’re probably advertising it in instagram, and it’s still just 20% of the instagram userbase.

Decentralization is nice, but most people don’t care about it and it’s too complicated or annoying to sign up there. Threads is dead simple and people want a Twitter replacement. It’s also "just" a fifth of the Twitter userbase.

Europe is about to crack down on Chinese electric cars

TL;DR: The European Commission is launching an anti-subsidy investigation into Chinese electric vehicle makers, potentially leading to higher import duties. This move aims to protect Europe's auto industry and address concerns of dependency on China. If Chinese EVs are found to have an unfair advantage due to subsidies, it could impact their growth in Europe and lead to retaliatory measures. The investigation reflects growing geopolitical tensions and could influence the global EV market. (via ChatGPT)

Question: is Voyager going to be a “real” native app anytime soon?

That question keeps coming up and I’m pretty sure the answer is no. There are other native apps out there, voyager is and will most likely remain a web app.

It’s also not like you can flip a switch and suddenly it’s native. You’d have to rewrite everything from scratch, so there isn’t really a "we already got this far, let’s make it native" happening here.

I do, however, understand why people keep asking for it. There are some aspects to web apps that just feel a bit off, but I think voyager is doing an amazing job at being a web app.

Subscription free apps

I’ve gone more and more back to apples original apps for that reason. Reminders, Notes, Mail, (also keychain is slowly getting there for me) … Many have gotten a lot better and they have the advantage of being (more or less) continuously updated and completely free, if you don’t count the millions you spend on their hardware ~(つˆ0ˆ)つ。☆

wefwef is so good it should be an app and not a web app

There are definitely advantages to native apps and I basically always prefer them, but wefwef is doing an absolutely amazing job and there are upsides to web apps as well (cross platform, updates, …).

I‘d probably also prefer having this app as a native app, but that means either wrapping it, which doesn’t give you many advantages, or rebuilding it entirely at which point you‘re using a different technology stack than the one people building this are so good at.

There are other people doing that and many of them have the same Apollo in mind while doing so. Let’s just wait and see what each one of them can do, I’m definitely excited :)

TestFlight for Voyager

What’s everyone’s experience so far? Mine:

  • haptics are nice
  • status bar tap is very welcome
  • the back swipe issues seems to be a bit better, but not entirely solved
  • browser appear animation is really nice
  • the scroll hiccups seem to be also better, but also not entirely gone (short time of being inactive, but it then works without me waiting a second)
  • nav bar icons are still spikey (I’m probably the only one looking that closely at it, but I was hoping that might be fixed with the native version)

Europe is about to crack down on Chinese electric cars

I‘m sure it’s not as simple, but my first take on this was: Europe doesn’t invest in EVs, but China does. They start to loose the Chinese market and are about to loose their own market to China as well. Then politics steps in to "rescue" their own companies but all that does is shelter them from the pressure to adapt and evolve, and in the end they’re beyond hope and left in the dust while the advanced Chinese cars dominate everything.

Countering subsidies with import taxes is a different story ofc. But it certainly feels like the European car industry is in decline and it’s probably their own fault. If not in Europe most certainly in China.

I should add that I have no idea what I’m talking about here, so feel free to tell me where I’m wrong.
