Great news. Public institutions should never buy or use proprietary software.

What's a scam that's so normalized that we don't even realize it's a scam anymore?
Using non-free (proprietary) software and believing we are free to do anything we want with the software. But we can do only what the app (the devs) let us to do. We can't see or edit the code of program to run as we wish.

Closed‑source vs source‑available vs open‑source — which model makes the most sense for small tools?
Open Source or Free > Source available > Closed source. Okay, I am glad that you allow me to see the program that I use. But if you don't allow me to edit it to my needs or preferences, I won't use your product.

[AMA] We're Framasoft, we develop PeerTube, ask us anything!
Hello guys! Congratulations for your work on so many services! I have a question about Mobilizon: if I want to see events from Bucharest, is there a way to see events from all the instances, or do I have to search on each instance? Thank you!

F-Droid says Google’s new sideloading restrictions will kill the project
Google wants to control everything. So bad operating systems can't be installed on phones as easy as on computers.

How to stop having remorses for your actions?
Try to fix the mistakes. If you can't, just let them go. No need to live in the past.

It’s Not Just You. No One Wants Kids Anymore
Until last child is adopted, people shouldn't make any more children. And even if that happens, it's better to help existing children with your spare time and money, instead of creating new ones.

Migration from Win 10 to Mint
Great decision to move to GNU/Linux. I used Mint and recommend it as first distro for a Windows begginer. I always use a USB stick for back-up. Enjoy the journey!

No account? No Windows 11 for you, says Microsoft
Another big reason to switch to GNU/Linux.

how did you make the switch from reddit to lemmy.. i'm trying to myself but struggling to ngl
I wanted to switch from a proprietary centralized platform to a free federated one. The only inconvenience is that I find a group with same name on multiple instances, each with its own content. Instead of one containing them all.

If it ask for your phone number its not private.
Yes, phone number should be optional for easy contact discovery, not mandatory. As Threema. You have to provide your ID when buying a sim card.

Does anyone use SimpleX chat? Why or why not? Is it actually tangibly better for privacy than say, Signal, for example?
I have it and used it in the past. It's better in privacy than Signal since it's decentralized and doesn't use any identifiers. Signal forces you to use the worst identifier ever: your phone number. It should be optional (as Threema) for easy contact discovery, not mandatory. Back to SimpleX, I stopped using it because every time you have to connect the computer to phone if you want to use it from computer (it's for maximum security, but inconvenient for me). But it's a great app.

I have it. I would use it if I had contacts there. Compared to Signal, it doesn't force you to provide your phone number, which is great.

What helps people get comfortable on the command line?
2 things got me comfortable on command line: 1) A great cheat sheet (one from Ubuntu: https://ubuntu.com/download/server/thank-you); 2) Practice all the commands from the cheat list regularly. Last page is something for Pro version, but first 2 pages are great for a begginer. There is a typo at a command (or it was in a past cheat sheet): "Sudo change " instead of "sudo chage ". It helped me most to get comfortable with terminal. Enjoy!

I'm grateful for being able to have a choice like Linux or even BSD family instead having only two proprietary choices: Windows or MacOS.
There must be foss alternatives to every proprietary software. Big thanks to GNU and Linus Torvalds that joined their forces and created GNU/Linux!

How to send RCS messages from a computer without Google account in 2026 [Tutorial]

People don't care about their own health or privacy, let alone others. Look how many people don't practice any sport, smoke, drink alcohol or eat unhealthy foods. Or regarding privacy, how many people pay by card, although they know all their transactions are saved and seen by banks and potentially goverment. You made a very strong decision by putting your privacy first, over relationships. Maybe if more people would be like you, privacy-respecting messengers would grow up more.

So you left Big Tech entirely. You followed an interesting journey on it. I guess it was hard, especially in the beginning. Of course, people on Lemmy/Mastodon know more about technology than normies from Reddit or X. I also want to run GrapheneOS, I heard in 2027 it will be released on Motorola. I have Trisquel. Any step away from Big Tech and towards FOSS alternatives is excellent, so congratulations on all of them!

Yes, because people refuse to use FOSS messaging apps. So we have to use the lowest common denominator SMS/RCS. I also have Signal, SimpleX, XMPP, Delta Chat and Threema.
