I never even knew there was a theory like this to explain the Salem witch trials. I always assumed that everyone understood it as a case of superstition and suspicion run amok, I mean we even use the term "witch hunt" for such cases these days.
I have heard the ergot theory to explain dancing plagues, but those are fringe theories as well and not really accepted as a likely cause.

There is. If you experience issues the first step is to call 1-866-OUR-VOTE and they'll connect you with your state's voting officials.
AGs of states (especially blue states) have been preparing for these kinds of things and will be all over them.
It's also worth noting that this happens in every election with touchscreens. And it's quite possible that they are malfunctioning in any way, including changing R votes to D.
