I can say things like:

"I like Brains faggots more than any other brand" and "Retard the accelerator" without my comment being deleted and/or Reddit-banned for hate-speech.

I once got suspended from Reddit for saying: "The Scots weren't innocent during the British Empire. They were used for a lot of rape & murder".

It was considered racist. Until I appealed with 2 academic history papers that showed the Scottish Highlanders were considered a "martial race" and were used extensively in colonial campaigns during the British Empire. I really don't want to have to fucking educate dumb-as-brick Yank admins who don't know history or language beyond their shores.

I was finally site-suspended and can't create new users because a mod accused me of evading a sub ban. I didn't. Another mod just unbanned me cos the reason I got banned originally was idiotic. The mod didn't care. Re-banned me so my 15yo account got permanently suspended by the admins.

I'm done with that fucking site.

Anyone else feels that they're more active on Lemmy than they were on Reddit?

  1. The top 3 most upvoted comments aren't unfunny puns.
  2. This feels mor elike a 'community' because there's fewer people. I don't feel like I'm screaming at a tornado.
  3. More niche content. It's more fractured and I liked that about the early internet and early-reddit.
  4. My Reddit account got banned for a fucking ridiculous reason and every new account I make they re-ban. Fuck Reddit and it's over-sanitised, Disney-bullshit.
  5. I can speak British English without my comment getting deleted. E.g. "Can I bum a fag mate"?

Since we have a higher state of awareness as humans, might we also have more intense experiences of pain / pleasure / emotions?

Probably the opposite.

Our "higher reasoning" and "state of awareness" (needs defining) gives us the ability to do thigns other animals can't. For example chronic pain sufferers are taught how to manage their pain with a variety of CBT techniques. Not something you can teach a dog or cat.

People in intense periods of intense suffering may have thw ability to dissociate from the experience ("go to their happy place") to lessen the pain experience.

We're not aware animal shave this ability.

If anything mammals of all kinds that feel pain don't have our higher cognitive ability to help manage and supress it.

Having said that it's possible we feel more emotionally complex pain. Pain induced from our own minds by remembering trauma or imagining painful situations. As someone pointed out below a dying animal probably isn't thinking about the loss of it's family as it's dying. But it will be feeling the pain of dying acutely.

What other less-toxic system could work instead of karma?

Top 3 most upvoted comments always being unfunny puns was getting insufferable on Reddit. Everyone was trying to be a fucking comedian - that's what was popular and got upvotes.

The early Reddit you could have long, interesting arguments with people and you'd both be getting upvoted because you're both making interesting points.

It honestly feels like my brain is waking up from a digital coma since coming to Lemmy from Reddit. My own personality and opinions don't feel pointlessly supressed and sanitised.

Is there a food that is cheap, delicious and healthy at the same time?

For Brits: Swap "Mexican" for "Indian" or "Polish"

Also buy your spices from Indian supermarkets/shops/sections of Asda rather than getting Schwartz jars.

E.g. My local Asda sells a jar of Schwartz cinamon for £2.50. The next aisle sells cinammon in a bag of 3x the amount for £1! Same for rice, noodles and many other 'foreign' foods. Polish meat section can often be cheaper than the normal sections.

No. I'm 40yrs old and I don't keep up with the modern-day lingo. 😂

Also I'm British so I speak British English. "Fags" are cigarettes and "faggots" are a type of food.

I feel like my brain is detoxing since coming here. In the literal and figurative sense.

  1. Addiction - I'd degenerated to just doom-scrolling reddit and rarely commenting cos the top 3 comments were unfunny puns with 12,000 others so it never felt worth it.
  2. Regaining Self - I'd become so outwardly sanitised I didn't realise I'd stopped swearing entirely in my older comments. I used to pepper my comments with fuck, bitch, shit, cunt as I do in the real woirld. But with heavy penalties against words like "faggot" (which is fucking idiotic for Brits) I'd started to self-censor to the point I wasn't being "me".

I'm not saying I hope it turns into 4chan.

But I do hope it grows into the early days of Reddit. Where people only downvoted things they found useless rather than disagreeable. There were less self-made echo chambers with ultra-sanitised 'drone-like' users where everyone had the same unfunny opinion.

On DM-Deck16 map!! Firing rockets at the ground to jump up and over to the other side and blasting your mate point blank with the frag gun mid air. God I loved that game and it wasted HOURS of my uni time playing LAN matches across campus.

I won every tournie we set up and played in the 1st year Halls.

When I first got the original CS thoguh I lost my skill. I didn't have the patience for one-shot kills. I rage quit everytime I'd get headshot. I realised I was good at tanking a shot then crazy-dodging and countering. You couldn't do that in CS. So in UT I could take a shot, rocket jump in their direction and shotgun the bastard from behind before they knew what was happening. None of those skills transffered to CS where accuracy and cover was the main aim.

r/pics calls out spez' history as jailbait moderator, a former sub dedicated to actual CP. the post hit the front page with 15k karma in 4h, then got removed earlier today

I'm a Reddit user of 16yrs and can safely say: He didn't just "doi nothing". Reddit and Steve himself actively promoted and supported the sub AND the main moderator (violentacrez). The mod had a "Pimp" badge added to his profile specially for him. He also had a golden Reddit Snoo trophy sent to him personally.

The original and main mod had a couple of AMAs that were often commented in by admins like Spez and Ohanian.
