Mariia Legenkovska s’en allait à l’école avec son frère et sa sœur lorsqu’elle a été heurtée par une automobile, le 13 décembre 2022. Manuel Becerra Garcia ne s’est pas arrêté pour lui porter secours. Il s’est livré plus tard à la police cette journée-là. Mariia et sa famille se sont installées à Montréal en 2022 après avoir fui l’invasion russe. Son père Andrii Legenkovska combattait au sein de l’armée ukrainienne au moment de sa mort. Il est venu à Montréal pour assister à l’inhumation de sa fille.
