I think the overall sentiment is correct given how the current manifestation of AI is built primarily to build a system of control over human information, with the principle players (Oracle, Amazon, Google) attempting to execute the strategic goal of controlling human intelligence for the purposes of political power.

I also agree that the way the supporting network for AI is being built out is an environmental catastrophe, both in terms of data centers physical ecological footprint and the additional power they consume.

But I fully believe that it's not the technology at fault - rather, its how its being used by the power players that control it.

A data center doesn't have to be an ecological nightmare, for instance. An underground facility powered by above ground wind and solar could provide both the needed power and temperature control, while containing the impacts from sound and machinery. But it's more expensive to build underground than it is to buy off the city council in bumfuck Alabamistan.

Let's look the technology itself. What AI has become is not intelligence or consciousness in any sense of the word. It has become a text based interface with an engine capable of processing large datasets and performing complex operations on the level of a human operator (sometimes).

This in itself is not fascist -but it absolutely has the power to enable fascism in the wrong hands, and all of the principal players in the space have proven themselves amoral (save perhaps Anthropic in certain cases). Conversely, I also believe it has the power to enable democracy in the right hands.

The key word here is power. Power means the power to either disrupt the status quo or build it. AI is a power we've only come to live with for about two years now, and its terrifying because its already in the hands of the wrong people.

But it's not going away, no more than nukes will or guns or anything humanity has found a use for. I think blanket statements like AI = fascism do more harm than good because they give responsibility to a tool, when in fact it should lie with the people who use those tools towards nefarious ends.

When your political affiliation and ideology become the center of your opinion rather than trying to come close to truth

So that's your line of censorship, and it's subjective. "Trying to come close to the truth" is a subjective analysis of the content the user posts. If a user posts that Taiwan is Chinese, do you censor them? What if a user posts that Taiwan is not Chinese? Both are subjective truths depending on one's political stance. Regardless of what you decide, unless you let them both speak, you're making an editorial decision to support one side or the other.

If you don't let them speak at all, then you're removing the conversation to avoid damaging the morale of your users (your words in the previous post, not mine). This is propaganda by omission - pretending the discussion of the topic doesn't exist, and thus presenting the illusion that the problem doesn't exist.

But I get it (have run social media sites in the past) - you're looking for a certain level of quality conversation to appear, in the hopes that it generates the quality content needed to draw enough eyes to your project to ensure long-term visibility. A couple of trolls can kill that in the early stages of growth, and politics is a breeding ground for trolls.

But its also going to draw more of an audience than most other topics, and it will generate far more discussion. Like it or not, understanding the political forces that control your life is a matter of survival these days.

So why not allow them to independently censor their feeds instead locking down the contributions of people who do like politics? The tech exists on both Reddit and Lemmy (and works pretty well). Besides, you're already taking a political stance by funding non-profits - unless they're shelters for homeless nazis, it's likely you're providing funding to a left-leaning cause. What happens when one of your non-profits runs afoul of the Trump administration? Will you allow them to post?

But hey, it's your space, it looks slick, and its a neat idea - I wish you luck. But it's not worth my time to create an account there - there are plenty of outlets where my content won't be censored by default if it strays into politics.

Hmm... good concept for a community site, particularly the non-profit support, but the no politics rule is going to keep it from every becoming relevant and will eventually lead to censorship within the platform. For instance, will they allow posts about climate change? It's clearly a political issue, but much more of an environmental one, and something that is affecting us every day - does this mean it's a topic non-grata on Oddsrabbit?

I also don't trust the "no surveillance" pledge, regardless of the developer's intent. The legal framework that would keep that information private doesn't really exist in the US any more in a practical sense, and its disingenuous to imply they can protect it.

Censorship is still censorship. Where's the line when a topic becomes too political?

If you're looking to improve people's morale, then what you're running is not a discussion forum, but a propaganda machine. Once you cross the line from the presentation of ideas to the manipulation of the reaction to those ideas, you've ceased to become a voice for the people, and you've just become another voice telling them how to feel and what to think.

If you want to see some of the most amazing dogfights in your life, put up three or four, all within sight of each other about 30' - 40' apart. This attracts multiple birds, and the distance is too great for one bird to dominate the food source, but just close enough to keep them pissed off at each other.
