3D printer files for giving a Flock camera a *lot* of sun protection

cross-posted from: https://programming.dev/post/56270925

Please let me know if this should be posted somewhere else, and remove it if it does not go here.

Sometimes a camera just needs a sock.

The Flock Sock is a slip on cover designed to help protect a Flock camera from the harmful radiation of the sun. Your city spent their very own hard earned tax dollars scattering these cameras everywhere to keep you safe, all it cost you was a little privacy. The very least you can do is help protect these valuable civil servants from getting a bad sunburn.

If bad news about enshittification can get hundreds of upvotes, how many for posts on how to resist or reverse it? !Deshittification [not mine]

cross-posted from: https://programming.dev/post/55958799

![email protected]

State of affairs for technology seem bad? But what is being done to change it? And what could be done by you so it changes at least for yourself?

A community to talk about the reversal of enshittification, be it news, actions that could be done, etc.

And my favorite rule of the community:

If you must talk about enshittification, please include how someone could reverse it; otherwise, post it elsewhere

Not the mod or creator. I just post there. Home instance is programming.dev, see so many enshittification and LLM war posts even after unsubscribing to communities that post them a lot like !Programming. More than a little frustrated that An Enshittification Happened gets 500 upvotes and tons of engagement, but this little community telling you How To Resist Or At Least Partially Reverse An Enshittification (whether that be an overall strategy thinkpiece on what actions could happen at a macro level to help stop it, or a how-to guide for your personal device/experience) averages 20 upvotes. So I figured I'd try to do something about it and promo it instead of just being angry and doing nothing.

Original promo from its mod @[email protected] cross-posted from: https://thebrainbin.org/m/[email protected]/t/1339854

![email protected]

Made it because reversal should still be possible, and although there's ![email protected], other than its "positive monday" rule, the deshittification aspect isn't covered by their rules/guidelines (nothing against their community, though).

How to opt out of having your wi-fi access point used for big tech mapping services

cross-posted from: https://infosec.pub/post/51680303 where I suggest you check for more discussion on the topic.

cross-posted from: https://infosec.pub/post/51680197

Append “_nomap” to the end of your SSIDs to instruct Google not to use your wi-fi access point for their mapping services.

To do the same for Apple, add “_optout” to the end of your SSIDs¹.

To boycott both, the rumor is that Google’s “_nomap” must be last, but Apple’s “_optout” flag must be in the penultimate position if and only if Google’s token is at the end. So you might have an SSID like “boycottCloudflare_optout_nomap” to boycott the baddies, for example. But note that “boycottCloudflare” is merely symbolic, to raise awareness of the web’s most harmful enshitifier.

¹ sorry to say I have no reference to cite for the Apple rules. It’s just a rumor.

update

The Apple opt-out procedure has apparently changed to align with Google. Someone refers to this page for Apple.

update 2

Mapquest is suddenly gaining popularity.

Random Daily URLs (email newsletter)

cross-posted from: https://programming.dev/post/55800513

Figured it'd be a nice counter to everything online being the five big websites and screenshots of them.

Every weekday, I send one link.

No lists. No hot takes. Just one URL worth seeing.

I present websites with minimal framing and let you decide what they mean. Sometimes I'll add a brief note when something stands out, but the conclusions are yours.

Along the way, it entertains, surprises, and points to corners of the internet that are still alive.

Sometimes it's old. Sometimes it's obscure. Sometimes it's something I made myself.

Permacomputing: some nice guiding principles for building new tech stuff

Feel free to delete this if it doesn't fit here, since it's not about reversing the bad that exists. Posted since it seems to align with the attitudes here of making things better, not worse, and making useful tech that is nondestructive to people and the environment and not greedy, which sounds opposed to enshittification.

HIVE: a sandbox automation game you only interact with via code

cross-posted from: https://lemmy.blahaj.zone/post/46162019

I finally open sourced my game!!! I was mainly working on getting it a better title (it still may change in the future) and figuring out licensing.

This game comes from me playing with the minecraft mod computercraft and my friend pondering the idea "what if you played the game from a bedrock box by only controlling a turtle" and everything just kinda spiraled out of control from there. The game is in a very bare bones state, just with a basic interpreter for Hive--, the truly god awful programming language you use to command your workers. The automation aspect of the game is very much meant to encapsulate both the diegetic resource gathering and processing you do as well as the tools you create to make writing the code easier. It's very much not a game for most people and isn't trying to be commercial or have a large audience. This is solely a game for people who are as autistic about programming (and slightly insane) as I am.

You can keep track of development using the git.gay

Recommended tools from ReclaimTheNet.org

Found this site, figured at least this part of it aligned with the intent of deshittification.

Today, a few companies decide what you see, store what you do, and choose what you’re allowed to say. The tools recommended here are the way out: browsers, messaging apps, publishing platforms, and services that push back.

Redirector browser extension, helpful for avoiding time-suck websites

cross-posted from: https://programming.dev/post/49917849

Tons of blocker tools out there like LeechBlock and StayFocusd, this one redirects instead of blocks. I've found it useful.

  • I know I try to access timesuckwebsite.com that I know I browse when I actually should be squeeblerizing, and so I have timesuckwebsite.com redirect to squeeblerizingthesite.com.
  • I know that I have a bad habit of looking at ostensiblyusefulwebsite.com for information on underwater basket weaving, but end up sucked into endless scrolling the related articles and never actually finding the answers I am looking for. Sometimes I've actually just dealt with this by using uBlock Origin to banish the thing showing related articles; sometimes I just redirect ostensiblyusefulwebsite.com to an html file I made 3 years ago with links to good underwater basket weaving resources where I can probably turn up the answer with a little more concentrated effort.
  • Of course, you can also use this for other things (which I guess could be incremental time saving and lots of annoyance-saving) like redirecting minecraft.fandom.com to minecraft.wiki.
