Redirector browser extension, helpful for avoiding time-suck websites

Tons of blocker tools out there like LeechBlock and StayFocusd, this one redirects instead of blocks. I've found it useful.

  • I know I try to access timesuckwebsite.com that I know I browse when I actually should be squeeblerizing, and so I have timesuckwebsite.com redirect to squeeblerizingthesite.com.
  • I know that I have a bad habit of looking at ostensiblyusefulwebsite.com for information on underwater basket weaving, but end up sucked into endless scrolling the related articles and never actually finding the answers I am looking for. Sometimes I've actually just dealt with this by using uBlock Origin to banish the thing showing related articles; sometimes I just redirect ostensiblyusefulwebsite.com to an html file I made 3 years ago with links to good underwater basket weaving resources where I can probably turn up the answer with a little more concentrated effort.
  • Of course, you can also use this for other things (which I guess could be incremental time saving and lots of annoyance-saving) like redirecting minecraft.fandom.com to minecraft.wiki.

Curating your consumption to view with intent

Nice community!

I’ve found a great method that works well to stop scrolling and stop going from video to video or article to article based on any algorithm. The idea is simple, instead of scrolling and consuming, build a personal curated list for a short period of time where only those curated links are then able to be consumed.

Breaking up scrolling into two phases of an initial “scout” phase to find links and save them with a defined cut off period or quantity. With a secondary phase of going back to that curated list and consuming or viewing with more purposeful intention, allows you to have more structure where the algorithms have less control and you still get your dopamine hits in both phases.

Taking a third step to then journal or reflect on each link in your content bank then lets you consider what value that had, and the beauty of this is, if you only go on a “scout” once all media is reviewed and reflected, you start to realise the time was either spent positively or was wasted with each link and you become more critical when going on a “scout” mission for the week ahead.

This curated list can be kept analog or with digital note taking / second brain solutions and works either way. Thumbnail example was ripped from a video on the subject: https://youtu.be/-OjikK5APSk

Before engaging in an argument, consider the following:

  1. Do you think the opponent's arguments will help improve your worldview? If so, the argument is useful.

  2. Is your opponent open to changing their view, and will your arguments help that? If so, the argument is useful.

  3. Is this an effective use of your time reaching other people compared to e.g. posting/commenting your arguments elsewhere? If so, the argument is useful.

Otherwise, the argument is not useful and you should consider doing something else.

[RECLAIMED TIME] Creation is the cure for consumption

It's not enough to remove distractions from your life.

Nature abhors a vacuum, and that includes one in your headspace.

In order to make sure you don't go back to your old habits, you need new, better habits, that are more about creation (drawing, writing, crafts, modding...) than consumption (scrolling, getting ragebaited, tiktoks/similar...)

Also, feel free to post about your creations here. Just make sure to prefix your title with "[RECLAIMED TIME]" (or put a hash tag in it, idk how tags work on Lemmy if they work at all)

For example, here's a drawing of my OC I drew in the beginning of this year.

Is it true? Are we really robbed of our time? I think we do need this kind of escape.

I have a view that us humans do need some kind of escape from reality. Some really mindless escape from reality.

Few examples: After I quit social networks I got addicted to reading news. After I limited that, I am spending lots of time on Lemmy.

My grand parents spent most of their afternoons watching TV.

Before smart phones existed my mom had to remind my dad to put his newspaper (or could be phone) down when we are eating.

And after reading some stories about our great grandparents lots of people escaped to alcoholism and constant sex. I think major contributor to alcoholism being down is existence of another healthier escape (social networks).

Even if I try. I often get to tired to continue my selected exactly for this purpose really mindless hobbies. And just to have something to do I take out my phone and doom scroll. I do often sit with myself and get bored. However I think doom scrolling is just one of escapes we use.

What I try to do about this is at leas doom scroll slightly better stuff. I do not watch tiktoks, but I do browse news, and lemmy and watch lots of youtube. However I try to only watch high quality content I am subscribed to.

But at the end of the day I spend huge portion of my day on my phone mostly doom scrolling.

What do you think about this?
