Girl with a black eye - by Norman Rockwell (1953)

When I was in college I had a professor who made the argument that Norman Rockwell's work was best described as illustration rather than art. I think it was partly due to the realism and the focus on "normal" American life with a lack of interpretation or symbolism. But looking at this now I can't help but think he was totally wrong. The look on the girl's face that says "you should see the other guy," the concerned adults having a conversation in the principal's office, there is a whole story being told here in a single frame. To say this isn't art seems crazy to me.

Breaking news: Millennial and GenZ women have standards

Reply in thread

In the guise of "just asking questions" and "listening to all sides" he platforms people with extreme views including some far right weirdos, and normalizes them to his audience. He is also just a walking example of the Dunning-Kruger effect and somehow one of the most listened to voices among his demographic, which draws additional ire from many, myself included.

xkcd #2827: Brassica

Reply in thread

It's not the title, but rather a sort of "bonus joke" that pops up when you hover a cursor over the image (or long press on mobile I think). It's a staple of xkcd and other webcomics, but I'll grant that it does present some confusion for those who rely on alt text.

I for one appreciated that being in the post so I didn't need to click thru for the bonus joke as I usually would. Perhaps it's just better to call it something other than alt text.

People accuse leftists of idealist thinking but in what fantasy world are you thinking your personal savings from selling your labor is ever going to come close to what would be considered "capital" in the sense being discussed here?

Nonbinary Teacher in Florida Fired for Using Mx. Title

Reply in thread

The point is that the teacher is non binary and forced to choose an honorific. They wanted to use a neologism because there isn't an established term and they were fired because of bigotry. It doesn't really matter if the term makes sense to you or anyone else, it was their choice.

Your comments reek of the same smug shittiness of people who throw a fit about they\them pronouns not being "grammatically correct" when singular they has been in use for ages.

Non binary people exist, and if they are required by their job to use a formal title, they should have one that recognizes who they are.

Youtube ads finally got me

Actual unpopular opinion: get yt premium. It gives creators the money they would've got for you watching an ad, while giving you an ad free experience, and also includes yt music which might take some adjustments if you're used to Spotify, but then you will also not be supporting Spotify which is probably the worst streaming service in terms of paying artists.

(They're all bad and many people would argue similarly against supporting Google via YouTube, so perhaps it's a moot point, but that's part of how I justify my sub to myself anyways.)

As if the tip actually goes to the dashers.

Reply in thread

Tips may have been that way a hundred years ago but I've been in the restaurant industry in the US for over 15 years, and for the duration tips have been used as a means to offload labor costs to the customer. They are not optional for the majority of people who work for tips, they are the difference between paying bills and not.

The practice is antiquated and should be completely removed as the standard way to compensate restaurant workers. But the thing that anti tippers always seem to miss is that the labor costs will still be there and the owners are not going to take it out of their cut. The menu prices will per force go up when companies get rid of tips. The same people will be complaining about that just as loudly, I'm willing to bet.

As I said in another comment, it's a bad system, but if you don't tip, you're a bad person.
