What are you boycotting right now and why? Are there any Boycotts you've ended?
@TootSweet Its said a modern human can't live without using Google, Microsoft, Apple, Amazon and f*ckbook.
They dominate that much of our lives.
Wanted to change this notion. So I don't use a single Big Tech service. Why? How about-
Hope that's good enough

Brave VS DuckDuckGo : Most Privacy Focused Search Ingine
@Sterben tho this post might not be doing so but still dont get why people like to compare and pick only 1 search engine to use forever
Just use all of them. Try all. Everyone has unique needs
Each company has differences in indexing. Tho the duck is Bing based, it chose to block "russian propaganda". For something as vast as the net, using 1 engine is like using only 1 eye to see the world
For a truly open perspective, use multiple! Only for convenience's of daily searches, maybe pick one

@bytor9 yes it can be tricky.
But I really don't have a Google, Microsoft, Apple, Amazon or F*ckbook account nor use any of their services. Occasionally once in a year I might visit if given a link but that's pretty much it.
As for a list, I might launch a blog soon. Follow me on Mastodon for that! Meanwhile, here are 2 great lists-
You'd want to use FOSS software as much as possible!

At what age and how do you tell children about the truth of Christmas?

@WashedOver @Clymene cant stress just how much I disagree here if you're serious
Parental teaching, while not perfect, is the way to go to atleast lay some groundwork for thigs like sex ed before you step out into world
By the time you reach the playground, its too late and you can easily be taken advantage of
Anyone else, apart from parents, have ulterior motives

@JshKlsn You are talking about a chicken and egg problem here.
When these devs with millions of users promote Lemmy, is when Lemmy will thrive bringing in even more incentive to build great apps for them

@eya exactly but they werent always like that.
Google's like Microsoft now. The very company they destroyed both in so many key markets. They were innovative.
Its the 97% search share and 70% Browser share thats the problem.
How Google, an AI company for over a decade, got so shock by newcomer OpenAI? Out of box thinking. What google itself used to be about
Thats what we need. Competition. Not anti trust trials or regulations. But prodcuts like chatgpt & Brave to make big companies innovate

@animist Twitter is mainstream. Instagram is mainstream.
Reddit was nowhere as mainstream as you might think. Outside of US.
It had a nice balance between being niche but having enough content.
Atleast that's what I feel

@ophy thanks for not being rude about it.
I did mention Sync. Mastodon has word limits after all so couldnt fit all in 1 post. Here's my post right after this one- https://mastodon.social/@abcxyz/110632697269529190
As for Boost, that was announced a few days AFTER my post. Yes I didnt edit it because there was the word limit and I also like to believe my post played some part in making the devs consider ;)
There is a reason why I used the word "ALMOST". All my posts are heavily researched :D

@eya Kind of. But all engines have their own unique features too
Google/Startpage has quick snippets
Brave has Toggles. Duckduckgo has bangs
Baidu/Yandex/Naver has immense localisation
Bing has OpenAI
Under competition, companies will innovate. Thats what this is. Forcing Google to innovate
For that we've to support them all. meta engines are good for what they are. But it cant have those extra features. Search isnt only about the results. Like how YouTube isnt *just* about the video

@trifictional People are what make a platform.
Users submit content to fill it
Mods make it liveable
Lemmy has enough mods. But given that 99% of redditors weren't affected by the changes, Lemmy just doesn't have the urgency.
Big subreddits are protesting instead of switching to Lemmy.
One adv is that Lemmy can tap into Mastodon users. But even that I have not seen happenning.
I will be happy to be proved wrong tho. Let's see...

@trifictional I saw support for Mastodon and people moving to it.
Lemmy just hasn't had that yet.
And its apparent why.
Unlike Twitter, core functionality of Reddit has still not degraded

@BrikoX given that all big subreddits are protesting instead of switching. Lemmy has not threatened Reddit even remotely close as Mastodon did forcing Twitter to block Mastodon links.
I 100% agree with you, Lemmy only needs to be a competitor, not a replacement.
But so far, that also hasn't happened
