Jury vs judge trial is a separate axis from common law vs civil law. You can have common law (where decisions of higher courts are deemed binding on lower courts) even if lower courts are all judge-only trials. You can have trials decided by a jury where every decision made by a judge is ultimately answerable only to written statute, with prior judicial judgments being at best persuasive.

Ask the Tibetans, Uighurs, Hong Kongers, and Taiwanese how they feel.

But maybe don't do the first three, because you're likely putting them in a position between risking their own safety and lying.

Cook's expertise was in the logistics. He's definitely not been a great leader for them putting out exciting products, but he's the reason they're so much less affected by things like global shipping crises or RAM prices exploding than many other companies are.

I suspect that the thinking when he was appointed was that logistics was going to be key to Apple's future success. And at the time, they also had a number of high profile creative people in other roles, though they have pretty much all moved on since. And if you look at their financial performance in the years since Cook took over—which is the board actually cares about—it's hard to say that this was a bad approach.

Yup. I'm not surprised at Americans being opposed to it, but here in Australia we have cameras that detect phone usage while driving. The fine itself is issued after a person verifies the photo. And I am fully supportive of it. Driving a motor vehicle is an insanely fucking dangerous task. If your full attention isn't on it, you deserve to receive a fine. Keep the phone stowed securely in a holder, or away in your pocket.

The freedom of me to be able to make my trip on foot or bike—or even in my own car—without being killed by you far outweighs any idea of freedom you might have to be able to have your phone on your lap.

Australians and Canadians have some pretty bad entitlement when it comes to driving. But neither of us are anywhere near as entitled as Americans. Discussions like the one in this thread make that very clear. ![email protected]

Trump is so desperate to get the Peace Prize, just because he's an incessant narcissist. He got his start running for politics because a few jokes from then-President Obama hurt his feelings, and trying to beat Obama at everything he had done really stands over Trump.

I subscribed to YouTube Red back in the day, when that’s what it was called.

Then circa early 2018 they changed the rules for monetisation from the previous 10k lifetime views to 1k subs & 4k watch hours over 12 months. That was when I unsubscribed from Red and installed an ad blocker. I had always been anti ad-blocker because my view was that people creating content deserve to get paid for it. That’s still my view in principle, but the increasing enshittification of the web thanks in no small part to shit like this from Google has meant I weigh the pros & cons differently. YouTube showed me very directly that they don’t care about supporting their creators. So I decided I didn’t want to support them anymore. It’s not like this was the first problem…the whole “where’s the fair use” thing came before that, and many other events besides. But cutting off small creators like that, without even grandfathering in existing creators who had been monetised with that threshold, was the last straw for me.

It was also Google’s fault that I moved from Ad Block Plus, which I chose specifically because of its “acceptable ads” policy (basically: let through ads that aren’t obnoxious), to uBlock Origin, which lacked such a policy, after YouTube tried blocking ad blockers from YouTube, and UBO was quicker to adapt.

That’s twice now that Google’s own actions have directly led to me supporting them less than I used to. This won’t be the third time, but only because I have no more cuts to give.

Macs have had USB-C charging since 2015.

This was, in many respects, a downgrade, since Apple's proprietary MagSafe was seen by many as a valuable feature. Power cords that pop out rather than yanking the laptop off the desk if someone trips over it are pretty handy.

In 2021 Apple started re-including MagSafe on their laptops. But since doing so, the USB-C ports have also been able to charge the laptop.

So since 2015 they've been compliant with this law, and since 2021 they've had the best of both worlds, with either option working.

Yeah that's an insane amount. Nearly 1 in every 50 joules generated is currently going to generative AI. That's incredible for a single purpose.

And if Amazon decided to not give them any more software updates, they'd be fine.

But actively taking away working functionality is inexcusable, even after 100 years. If the device itself is still working, its functionality should not be reduced.
