I imagine it takes a certain kind of narcissism to look at “leading an entire company” and think, “yeah, I bet I’d be great at that!” The best CEOs are the ones who let their employees come up with the ideas and just make the final decisions. When the top is driving, IMO, the company falls over.

Meta is in it for profit. So you have to ask what they’re stand to gain by offering a federated service (presumably for free). Do they think they can get free data, perhaps? I have no idea, but it’s tempting to want to block them just in case. Costing ActivityPub maintainers money so you can steal user data to sell for money isn’t exactly ethical…

I’m trying to think generously, but struggle to imagine other ways they might be able to profit off the Fediverse.

I went through the same phase several years back when my child was born, and you’re right—games where you can pause any time are the only kind worth playing for several years after a new child.

Don't get me wrong, I use ChatGPT more days than not for my job; but I use it to help me find things I might not have known about... and then I go and actually look up those things to get correct information. It's really good at helping you find words to google to get at what you want. It's really BAD at always giving you good information.

Among my personal friends, probably the same ratio of men and women are into Souls games. So like… yeah, women play games. And not just “lady-friendly” fare. As a non-woman, I freaking love Animal Crossing; meanwhile my wife has beaten most of the Souls games and I’ve given up on all of them. Anecdotal, but like… gamers like gaming, and I feel like these days trying to say anything about game preference and gender is just not really helpful.

I’m really into a bunch of the non-XR updates. The new MacBook Air looks really nice; and the fitness and health updates all seem useful as well. The headset is so far out still I kind of don’t care yet. Maybe as we get closer to release there’ll be more info about it; but “coming next year” just really dampens my enthusiasm.

The issue, I imagine, is that there’s a community online who pays attention and cares about it, and we’re almost completely separate on the Venn diagram from a huge swathe of gamers out there who do all the preordering. 😩

This is one of the few games in recent memory that I've played start-to-finish! Beautiful game, great story progression (for what it is), and it just kept always presenting something new and interesting so I never got bored of it. Even now, I find myself tempted to go back and pick it up for PC (I played it original on Switch) and play through it again but with a better framerate. :P

I've wanted those Analogue consoles for so long, but I just can't quite justify the price tag on them.

Anyway, caterpillars and aphids and slugs WILL eat your food for you. So don’t get too discouraged if it happens. You can try to spray, you can go out every night or so and pick them off if your garden is small (worked really well for our little patch), and you can try planting sacrificial flowers and herbs.

But just try to enjoy the process of learning, and know that you'll get better as you continue.

I go back and forth between Steam (PC or Steam Deck) and my Switch, depending on what I'm playing. I do have a PS5 which I'll use mostly for Sony exclusives... like FF16 is going to be a PS5 play for me.

I have a small-to-medium collection of games from most consoles (especially the cartridge generation) and being able to play original games over HDMI without any artifacts just really speaks to me. I'll definitely have to intentionally save up for them to allow myself to splurge, though.

Right now, I have a few plugged into a composite switcher going through a RetroTink2X, which lets me play well enough, and I do kind of enjoy the RCA composite look, I'm more in the camp of "give me the raw pixels clean" than "RCA signal is how it was meant to look"

Adding to this, you won’t necessarily know what a plant is saying right away when it looks unhealthy. Other gardeners can help; but also as you get a few seasons on with plants, you’ll learn better how to understand them.

I just set up my first NAS -- a Synology 1522+, with 4x6TB drives in whatever Synology's custom raid is called where I lose one drive to redundancy.

So far, I mostly use if for my in-home Plex server (which finally lets me shut down my gaming rig at night while still letting me watch TV shows and listen to music to sleep, so big energy win there, I imagine). I'm considering running my own Matrix chat, PixelFed(?), maybe Mastodon and/or Lemmy on it for my local friends and family; but I'm still looking into solutions.

Would like to get off "Discord for everything", and I kind of miss what Facebook used to be in terms of just posting updates about my life and reading updates about other people's lives.

Not sure I trust Synology's built-in Chat and other replacement options to be as good as what I'd like, though, in terms of both quality and privacy/security. Happy to hear from folks with more experience!
