Almost the entire US South is now being blocked by Pornhub

Reply in thread

While it's probably true that there are people who might struggle with porn, there are plenty of people who struggle with addictions of all kinds - alcohol, gambling, opiates, etc.

But there are certainly valid questions that come up with stuff like this:

  • Is the government's place to enforce a mandatory 18yr age requirement to view porn?
  • If so, what kinds of unintended ramifications are possible from imposing such a requirement? I can think of quite a few, but I'm curious what others think.
  • Could it be argued that this is an attempt to legislate morality or impose censorship?

I think that these are fair questions and perhaps the meat and potatoes of the issue lies a bit deeper than anyone's sole opinion on whether porn is "bad for you" or not.

Does faster than light travel violate causality? Why/Why not? How?

iirc the only method of faster than light travel that doesn't violate laws of physics involves warping spacetime. We can now detect ripples in spacetime, and scientists postulate that in the far future it might be possible to manipulate spacetime by warping it with technology not currently in existence.

Of course you could argue this method isn't really faster than light travel, since you're actually bending the distance between you and the destination.

Leak and sheathing rot behind the end of a soffit. How do I fix this?

Reply in thread

Good point on the rafter tail. I'll look in the attic in that area to confirm.

Yeah there's flashing above there and it's possible this is the source of the leak.

I'm afraid what I'm going to have to do is take all the siding off above here to expose the flashing and inspect it and repair. Then to remove and fix the rot I'm gonna have to take everything apart to get into that area behind the soffit - remove the gutter, fascia, etc to gain proper access

US Government is collecting donations to help pay off its $39 trillion debt

Reply in thread

Paying it off is only half the battle. If we don’t answer the question how did we get here?, we’re doomed to fall right back into this hole. Fact is, the government simply burns through money like it’s going out of style and until we elect representatives that use our money more responsibly, we’ll keep piling on more debt.

You can only rack up so much of it before foreign holders of US bonds start liquidating their positions or buying less of it. Once that starts happening en masse, all the cards will fall and it will be ugly.
