The bravery of a security guard who was shot dead along with two other worshippers at a San Diego mosque on Monday prevented the attack from being much worse, say police. The guard was Amin Abdullah, a father of eight, a spokeswoman for the Council on American-Islamic Relations-San Diego (Cair-SD), Tazheen Nizam, told the BBC. "It's fair to say his actions were heroic," San Diego Police Chief Scott Wahl told a news conference. "Undoubtedly, he saved lives today." Abdullah and two others - whom Cair-SD named as Mansour Kaziha and Nader Awad - were killed by two yet-to-be-identified teenage attackers who then took their own lives, say police. People who knew Abdullah told US media he looked after the community. Others have taken to social media to describe him as "the nicest man you'll ever meet". The mosque called him "a courageous man who put himself on the line of the safety of others, who even in his last moments did not stop protecting our community".

Opposition leaders in the Bahamas are demanding an investigation after a U.S. federal agent alleged that a suspected drug trafficker who survived a recent plane crash near Florida was rescued and found with roughly $30,000. The money was inside a bag labeled with the name of an unidentified high-ranking politician from the archipelago. The suspect, who was deported to the Bahamas more than a decade ago after being convicted on drug and money laundering charges, is accused of trafficking cocaine through the Bahamas to the U.S. He also is accused of meeting the unnamed politician in October 2024 at the Bahamian Parliament in Nassau to talk about a deal involving some 1,000 kilograms (2,200 pounds) of cocaine, according to a court document filed May 14 in the Southern District of New York, a day after the plane crash. It stated that the politician “could provide security for the planned cocaine shipment” and was introduced to an unnamed suspect as a “future associate.” The allegations are the latest blow to the Bahamas, whose police commissioner resigned in December 2024 after a sergeant and two officers were indicted in what the U.S. Justice Department at the time called “a massive cocaine conspiracy enabled by corrupt Bahamian government officials.”

At least four people were killed and more than 30 injured during protests that erupted across Kenya on Monday, as a crippling public transport strike fueled anger over a sharp rise in fuel prices linked to the Iran war and disruptions through the Strait of Hormuz. Interior Minister Kipchumba Murkomen said in a televised briefing a number of people were also injured. "We lost ‌four Kenyans ‌in ​today's violence, which also ​saw more than 30 ⁠people ​injured," ​he said. Last week, Kenya's Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority raised retail fuel prices by 23.5%, doubling down on last month's 24.2% hike. Kenya is one of many African countries which depend on fuel imports from the Gulf, suspended amid the continued closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

On May 13, the FBI’s Fayetteville Field Office contacted the Marion County Sheriff’s Office and turned over the information to investigators. Investigators obtained a search warrant for Bynum’s home and on May 15, searched the house in Oakland, where they seized a computer and related accessories. Bynum was taken into custody without incident, according to Sheriff Gregg Alexander. He was booked into the Marion County Detention Center and his bond was set at $2,500.

Massive crowds of protesters marched in cities across Argentina, including the capital Buenos Aires, Cordoba, Mendoza and Tucuman, on Tuesday. The protesters called for the government of libertarian President Javier Milei to implement a university funding law at the center of a lengthy political standoff. In Buenos Aires, the march culminated at the Plaza de Mayo, where the presidential palace is located, and spilled onto surrounding streets. Organizers estimated that some 600,000 students, university staff, union members and opposition supporters attended the protest in the capital with 1.5 million taking part countrywide. "It's very clear this government is determined to defund public education," Sol Muniz, a 24-year-old law student at the University of Buenos Aires at the march, told the Associated Press. "University is a source of pride for us. It is the best thing we have." "I'm here to defend public education," 18-year-old literature student Renata Lopez told the AFP news agency. She held a copy of Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451, a novel that depicts a future dystopian society that has outlawed books. The novel "speaks to our current reality," Lopez said. "Defunding education isn't something alien, it isn't dystopian. It's something that's happening."

The Department of Justice is considering settling Donald Trump’s lawsuit against the IRS, which could send taxpayer money directly to the president’s pockets, according to a new report. Trump sued the IRS and the Treasury Department for $10 billion in January, accusing the agencies of failing to prevent a leak of the president’s tax information during his first term. The DOJ is now holding internal discussions about potentially settling the case, and what that would look like, The New York Times reported Tuesday, citing people familiar with the matter. One option that the DOJ and White House officials are weighing is the IRS potentially ending any audits of Trump, his family members or his businesses, according to The NYT.

Donald Trump has accused the US media of “virtual treason” as it reports that American intelligence indicates Iran retains substantial missile capabilities. “When the Fake News says that the Iranian enemy is doing well, Militarily, against us, it’s virtual TREASON in that it is such a false, and even preposterous, statement,” the US president wrote on Truth Social Tuesday. Trump’s rant comes as The New York Times reports that Iran has restored operational access to 30 of its 33 missile sites along the Strait of Hormuz. Tehran has effectively blocked the vital oil waterway during the war. The UK has announced it will send drones, jets and a warship to aid a multinational defensive mission to secure shipping through the waterway. Defence minister John Healey said Tuesday, “With our allies, this multinational mission will be defensive, independent and credible”. Iran has also threatened to start enriching weapons-grade uranium if Trump reopens the conflict, with the ceasefire agreement on “life support” after the US president dismissed Tehran’s latest peace proposal. Mexico’s government and the CIA have rebutted a report claiming that US intelligence agents have participated in the targeted assassinations of alleged drug cartel members in the Latin American country. The denials on Tuesday came after CNN reported that the CIA has been deeply involved in deadly operations aimed at dismantling Mexico’s drug cartels.

CIA operatives have “directly participated” in several attacks on drug trafficking syndicates since last year, including a car explosion in March that killed Francisco Beltran, an alleged member of the Sinaloa Cartel, CNN reported, citing multiple unnamed sources. The operations have mostly targeted mid-level cartel members, with the CIA’s involvement ranging from “passive intelligence sharing” to “direct participation in assassination operations”, CNN reported. In a social media post, CIA spokesperson Liz Lyons said the CNN report was “false and salacious” and “serves as nothing more than a PR campaign for the cartels and puts American lives at risk”.

The National Science Foundation suspended at least 18 research grants to UC Berkeley last month despite a court injunction restricting such suspensions, according to an attorney representing university scientists in a class-action lawsuit. The NSF declined to comment on the suspensions. The grants include at least one that the NSF had previously canceled and was compelled by a federal court order to restore, for a series of mixed-reality exhibits at the Lawrence Hall of Science showcasing Indigenous Ohlone knowledge about the natural world, said one of the project’s leaders, Jedda Foreman. Foreman, an associate director at the Lawrence Hall of Science, said another researcher on her team received an email from UC Berkeley’s vice chancellor of research, Katherine Yelick, notifying them that the National Science Foundation had suspended the $1.4-million grant. Foreman said she viewed the email, which said the university had received a letter from the NSF raising concerns about “foreign funding.” The email did not provide a copy of the letter or explain further, she said.

Donald Trump is set to arrive in Beijing on Wednesday evening to discuss the Iran war and other issues with his Chinese counterpart President Xi Jinping. White House Principal Deputy Press Secretary Anna Kelly said an opening ceremony and meeting will be on Thursday morning, and the trip will conclude on Friday. The US plans to host the Chinese leader during a reciprocal visit later this year.

Donald Trump announced Sunday that Republicans plan to dispense a large “Election Integrity Army” to every single state for the 2026 midterms – invoking his debunked claims that the United States does not have fair elections. In a message on his Truth Social platform the president appeared to attribute his “Historic Election in 2024” to the fact that the Republican National Committee sent thousands of volunteers across the country to poll watch or assist with election litigation through a volunteer program. “During my Historic Election in 2024, when I won every single Swing State, and decisively won both the Electoral and Popular votes by wide margins, the Republicans had an Election Integrity Army in every single State to preserve the sanctity of each legal vote. We will be doing the same again in 2026, but it will be much bigger and stronger,” Trump wrote. US authorities are investigating the cause of a suspected explosion aboard a boat that injured 11 people in Miami, southern Florida. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Juan Arias told reporters that emergency crews responded to reports of a "possible boat explosion" at Haulover Sandbar, a popular tourist location. Eleven people were taken to local hospitals to be treated for burns and traumatic injuries, Arias said. Officials have not revealed the cause of the explosion. The BBC has approached Miami-Dade Fire and Rescue for further details. "We saw three people fly out of the boat," eyewitness and local boat charter Patrick Lee told the BBC's US partner CBS News. "I just saw a lot of them with burns all over them, and I said that it's a hot fire," Lee added. "It is quick, but it's high octane gasoline, and so a lot of them got burnt and it was an explosion."

A fresh wave of attacks by jihadist fighters in central Mali killed dozens of people, local and security sources said Saturday. Friday's attacks were claimed by the al Qaeda-linked Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM), who had already killed at least 30 people in attacks on villages on Wednesday. One local official said the latest attacks by the armed groups had brought the toll to more than 70 in recent days. Another local official put the death toll at 80. "Our hearts are bleeding," one local youth leader said, accusing nearby army detachments of doing nothing to help, despite multiple calls.

A bulk carrier caught fire on Sunday after being struck by an unknown projectile off the coast of Qatar, the British military has said. The UK Maritime Trade Operations Centre (UKMTO) reported a small fire on board the vessel, which was subsequently extinguished, with no casualties. The incident occurred 23 nautical miles (43 kilometres) northeast of Qatar’s capital, Doha. This attack marks the latest in a series of incidents targeting vessels in the Persian Gulf, following a fragile ceasefire between the United States and Iran. Just last Friday, the US struck two Iranian oil tankers, alleging they were attempting to breach its blockade of Iranian ports. In response, Iran’s Revolutionary Guard navy reiterated its warning on Sunday, stating that any assault on Iranian oil tankers or commercial vessels would be met with a "heavy assault" on US bases in the region or enemy ships.

Interim Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa has announced a series of government changes, including replacing his brother as head of the presidential office, the state news agency SANA reports. Al-Sharaa appointed former Homs Governor Abdul Rahman Badreddine al-Aama as secretary-general for the presidency. Along with the federal government’s food benefits, they keep her housing running. “We need this so we can keep functioning at a high level,” she says. “She loves fruit, so I make sure to get it,” she says of her daughter.

A trial has begun against five activists accused of attacking a German branch of Israeli arms maker Elbit Systems in September 2025. The first hearing opened in a high-security court in Stuttgart on April 27, but was aborted within minutes after defense attorneys objected to the fact that they were unable to communicate confidentially with their clients. Elbit Systems is one of Israel's largest arms manufacturers with subsidiary factories in several countries. The company manufactures drones, command-and-control, and telecommunications equipment for several other militaries, including the German Bundeswehr. Germany is Israel's second biggest arms supplier. The defendants, who hold UK, Irish, German and Spanish citizenship, have been charged with trespass, destruction of property, membership of a criminal organization and use of symbols of terrorist organizations. They have been held in separate prisons since their arrest on September 8, 2025, and face several years in prison if found guilty.

The first passengers evacuated from a hantavirus-stricken cruise ship docked near Spain's Canary Islands have been flown home. Fourteen Spanish nationals on the chartered flight from Tenerife face mandatory quarantine at a military hospital in the capital, Madrid. They were followed by French nationals taken to Paris and Britons taken to Manchester. Staff involved in the operation in Tenerife pulled white hazmat suits over the evacuees' clothes and hosed them down on the airport tarmac. More than 100 passengers and over a dozen crew members have fallen ill with norovirus aboard the Caribbean Princess during a 13-day voyage through the Eastern Caribbean. The Princess Cruises ship departed Port Everglades, Florida, last week and is scheduled to arrive at Port Canaveral in the state Monday. At the time of the outbreak, the vessel was carrying 3,116 passengers. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that 102 passengers became sick with the highly contagious stomach virus. In addition, 13 of the 1,131 crew members onboard also reported illness. Those affected experienced typical norovirus symptoms including vomiting and diarrhea, according to health officials.
