They even do Price Discrimination on video games now

Reply in thread

As a cloud engineer - renting any distribution servers from a cloud provider will result in a dev paying for every download. You pay based on the bandwidth you consume in the cloud (I.e., you pay per Gb delivered) as opposed to your pipeline like you do when you run your own private servers. You also pay storage costs per month. You'd have to maintain that "forever" as well, because people would want to uninstall, then re-install later.

I get your argument, and I'm not discounting it, but I do suspect that for smaller devs the price they're paying to Valve is well earned on Valve's side (and the fact that so many devs choose to use it would seem to bear this out). We should also consider that steam is essentially built-in DRM to games.

For larger customers, they likely have this infrastructure and get annoyed at the costs. They still go to Steam though because it increases their reach as a type of marketing strategy, so they still likely find the cut worth while. If Steam was more hostile to users, then people would actively look for alternatives (I.e., the Gogs of the world), and the publishers would have to target more storefronts.

So yes, Steam's primary customers are publishers, but I'm not sure they're really getting the raw end of the deal here :)

If not Github, where would you host your projects?

Note - you can completely disable all the AI features in Gitlab. In fact, they're disabled by default unless you explicitly enable them by configuring model integrations. I think its one of the better self hosted options because it had a clear maintenance and path to profitability.

I run my own GitLab on a NUC with no issues.

Disclaimer: I have contributed open source code to GitLab before.

Bots flooded my anti-bot startup with 55,000 fake signups

This is a horrible way to look at this because it discourages future disclosures. If anything, this disclosure indicates this company is trustworthy and learns from their mistakes with honest disclosures when things go wrong. The type of behavior we all wish every vendor had.

I have no need for their product, but if I was using them this would make me feel better, not worse.

EVs are now 9 times cheaper than petrol or diesel to drive in the UK

Reply in thread

some fun misinformation here. yes, if you have already paid off your car, it will be cheaper to continue paying elevated prices for gas than to buy a new car. yes, FAST charging stations are more rare than gas pumps.

NO, you aren't buying a new EV battery every 3-5 years. I've driven an EV for 4 years now and the battery is under warranty for another 100k miles still. Even if it wasn't there is ample evidence that batteries last significantly longer than people think.

NO, you will not be going to a fast charger as often as you go to a gas pump unless you cannot charge where you live. even a 10a 220v outlet will often charge more than someone drives in a day overnight.

EVs are the future, so its good to be educated instead of listening to the posts like this one.

Most Cybersecurity Professionals Feel Undervalued and Underpaid

The issue here is that cyber security folks seem to forget that fundamentally security is insurance. The goal is to pay the least youb can to prevent issues.

The number of times I've talked to CSOs or CISOs that want every piece of data in their seim or extremely strict controls is innumerable. If your spend all your budget on tools and data you have no budget for people. Its better to actually understand your risk posture and plan accordingly.

However, thats boring. Just like devs want to use kubernetes for their 5 user site, security folks want the shiniest endpoint protections. Resume driven development and resume driven security are real, and in a world where there is more direct cost and fewer discreet deliverables, its likely felt more on security.

There are two editions of Gitlab - community edition (completely open source) and enterprise edition (closed source additions). You can run CE completely free. You can actually run EE completely free too, there are just some features disabled
