The Steam Awards winners announced

Reply in thread

The Steam Awards are mostly just "what's my favorite game" or "which game have I heard of" for all categories. It doesn't matter if the game fits or not. For Wukong it's additionally "where was the game made", since it's a high profile Chinese game and Steam has a lot of Chinese users.

Nintendo explains why Switch 2 hardware and software cost so much

In justifying the $450 price of the Switch 2, Nintendo executives predictably pointed to the system's upgraded hardware specs, as well as new features like GameChat and mouse mode.

GameChat is truly a revolution. We haven't used voice chat for games for like 25 years, definitely not.

Nobody asked for the mouse mode, it will probably be used by two games, made by Nintendo themselves, then just be forgotten.

Classic Offensive (Counter Strike Go mod) gets rejected by Valve 8 years into development

While this is classic Valve non-communication, apparently the devs were hacking or reverse-engineering some closed source stuff, that Valve might not have agreed with.

https://x.com/csco_dev/status/1533103185543548929

Just so we are clear on how the mod works on our side, there is no leaked code involved. We're using a build from 2020 that has security exploits and a hacked dedicated server to be able to even play online while working on it internally.

The mod cannot be released in this state

This is all just some third-party information, I have no idea about this and don't really care about Counter-Strike.

Valve Issues Cease And Desist To Counter-Strike: Classic Offensive Mod Team After Previously Giving Approval, Shutting Down 8 Years Of Development

Reply in thread

This got rejected from Steam in January and the C&D was in March, but in between that Valve updated their Source SDK to add all TF2 source code, so it's not like they're completely anti-mod.

As usual, Valve doesn't communicate with anyone, so who knows what's going on there.

People are saying the reason is that they used/worked with leaked CS:GO code, which Valve doesn't like, but the devs deny it.

Epic reduce their cut to 0% for the first $1 million in revenue for devs on the Epic Games Store

Reply in thread

I know you said allegedly, but the article explicitly says that a policy like that doesn't exist, and the only thing that would happen (if the game is cheaper somewhere else) is that the game wouldn't be advertised during a sale.

When pushed on official policy in his deposition, DJ Powers claims that the ‘if else’ is normally this: “If we get to a situation where a partner is telling us that the price needs to be lower on other platforms than it is on Steam, then we will typically choose not to run curated marketing during times where that game is being discounted.”

He also notes that suggesting a game can’t be on the store at all - if not at parity - is “not our typical process”. Which is semi-believable, because a) it’s not in the contract and b) nobody at Valve has time to check and enforce that. But has it happened before, multiple times? Sure. And Wolfire’s lawyers will use that in the case.

[Hardware Unboxed] I Tested Every Game I Own on an Intel Arc GPU

Reply in thread

~250 games testet, about 90% worked without issue.

Some games were hard coded to avoid Intel graphics and would use the AMD iGPU by default (even a newer title like Alan Wake 2 did this), but after disabling the iGPU, most of those were fine.

I think like 10-15 games didn't work at all or had basically unplayable performance, maybe a few more with graphical glitches, some minor, some more noticeable.

If you dig into Oblivion Remastered's files you can find almost the whole original game like a set of dinosaur bones

I checked, and the stuff about modding is true (you can read the EULA directly on the Steam Store page), however the Skyrim Anniversary EULA says you can only use editors or tools by Bethesda or Zenimax to make mods (if I read that correctly). I don't think anyone really cares in Skyrim, and I don't think anybody will care with Oblivion

Doom the dark ages...

I'm currently playing the game, got like a handful of levels left. It's a good game, but with the way the Doom games have evolved and changed over the time, I don't think you can really say "if you like that Doom, you'll like this Doom."

I definitely enjoy the gameplay of Eternal more, but Dark Ages is really good.

The feel of running around is great. You sound massive, your jumps create shockwaves and kill enemies. If you've played Boltgun, it's like that.

The shield is feels great. The charge is awesome, just like the Meathook was in Eternal to get right next to your enemy, and fodder demons just explode on impact.

Parries feel good, but are extremely easy. The timing is super forgiving and the range is massive.

I think a big thing, that not many people are talking about, are the difficulty sliders. You can change so many things, but ID just ignores 90% of them with their presets. You can change so much stuff, and make it feel like a completely different game. Crank up the game speed and just zoom around. Increase your and the enemies damage, so it's all about dodging, or you get one-shot. Make the projectiles slow, but a lot more deadly.

There's still some ammo management, but it's not like Eternal, not even like 2016. Your melee attack, that you can use for the execute drops ammo, just like the Chainsaw, but you're using it regularly anyway. Some guns also have upgrades that shooting demons with it also drops ammo for the weapon.

The game is a lot more story heavy, but just like in Eternal you can just skip it and not read the Codex entries.

The mech stuff is alright, but pretty basic, but also really short segments. The dragon is cool in theory, but I really hate these parts, and they just drag on for far too long. Flying around just isn't fun.

Weapons are pretty good, and I have some favorites. The normal Combat Shotgun with upgrades is great this time and not just outshined by the Super Shotgun immediately. That Ball-on-a-Chain gun is also really nice, with some cool upgrades. Because you don't really have any ammo issues if you use the melee regularly, I've just used one gun for long stretches of time, because there's just no reason real reason to switch, and you can just use what you want.

The devs always said in Dark Ages you're like a tank, but with default settings on Nightmare difficulty, you're made out of paper. Projectiles are extremely dangerous, and enemies like to spawn behind you and shoot you in the back. The game is actually not great on telling you where you're getting attacked from, and there's just always tons of enemies around and some deaths can be kinda frustrating.

Then there are also some minor UI/UX issues. You get small icons in the middle for your melee charges, but they don't show the progress like in Eternal with the Blood Punch. There's no dedicated Map button, just open your Dossier, which remembers your last screen, which is annoying, because you want that map 99% of the time. Sprinting has this terrible vignette effect around your screen, and you want to sprint all the time, but you can only disable all screen effects, which includes some stuff I'd like to see.

For some dumb reason, the Fast Travel option, at the end of a level has been removed, so if you miss a secret, you'll have to play the level again. There's also tons of points-of-no-return, so you'll have to stare at the map constantly, to make sure you haven't missed anything, which makes the lack of a map button so terrible.

After I'm done with my Nightmare run, I want to do another one, where I play around with the sliders a bit. I want to turn up the game speed, but will probably lower the damage and projectile speed to compensate.

Remembering Descent, the once-popular, fully 3D 6DOF shooter

I remember playing this on my Voodoo graphics card back in the day.

I always wanted to check it out again, but there are no proper discounts of this game anymore, and the price even increased to 20€ a couple of months back. Who thinks that anybody will buy Descent with DOSBox for 20€ in 2025? Might as well just use my old pirated copy on a burned CD I have somewhere.

Why do new Silent Hill entries attract so much negativity?

For SH2, I think it was specifically because Bloober Team was working on it. They had a mixed or spotty track record before this release, so people were worried, they'd mess up the remake for a beloved game.

I think Konami also kinda "left" video game development for a time, focusing more on Pachinko machines, their health clubs, etc. So this, along with some of their previous choices, meant they didn't really have the best reputation (and still haven't), and people didn't know if it was just going to be a lazy cash grab.

Silent Hill f I don't really know what people are saying, and I haven't looked, but I can only guess that anti-woke mob is going after the game, because you're playing as a girl/woman, which is of course DEI, forced diversity, woke, whatever, I dunno.

Krafton Issue Statement Regarding Subnautica 2

Reply in thread

My assumption is that Krafton expected the leads to put in 12 hour days 7 days a week to meet ridiculous expectations and the leads took some vacation time or something along those lines.

This is from the lead himself, on his movie production website:

I’m Charlie Cleveland and I’ve been designing video games for over 25 years. I founded Unknown Worlds and built games like Natural Selection, Natural Selection 2, Subnautica and Moonbreaker. I absolutely love making games but wanted to try something new.

At the end of 2023, I left San Francisco after almost 20 years and moved to Los Angeles to reset my life. Instead of taking it easy, I now find myself working on multiple film projects. It’s amazing how fast it’s all happening - being right in the thick of things makes it so much easier to meet like-minded people!

Also, according to this link, he's taking a break from making video games, for at least a couple of months now, before all this stuff was out.

It might not be as one-sided as you think. But right now it's he said, she said, so nobody really knows.
