You would think right. I recently had a transit pass loading application update and demand that I turn off developer mode to continue use. This app is also run by a government agency across the pond(canada). Went over to the play store reviews and were all complaining about it.

They allege it was to help protect accounts and personal data. Ok, then why doesn't my bank account get compromised regularly? Or any other account I've logged into on my phone literally ever because I had turned on dev mode weeks after getting my first android 10 years ago. This application has been janky for years and only in the past month have they made positive changes to its functionality. I am biased and maybe more irked then necessary but I do expect better/the minimum from these kinds of institutions.

That is a level of ingenuity that I love to see in people. Application of it is nooot great but he's got the spirit.

How is it psuedo science to compare the addicting ways social media affects people and its similarity to drug addiction? It's an analogy, obviously no one is being 100% literal.

I feel crazy when I read these kinds of articles over the past few months, because I'll have a flash back to a few years ago where the exact same shit went down. And here they go again, this time cranked to 11. The show Orange is The New Black dedicated a whole subplot in their final season back in 2019 on how ICE was operating and what they were pulling. Immigration raids disguised as police raids, the indefinite detention of nonviolent migrants, inhumane conditions in holding, insufficient medical care/attention, etc.

One scene later in the season depicts the article above exactly, a group of children being put before a judge that they couldn't understand for many reasons; lack of representation, the language barrier, or because the kid is all of 2 years old.

Also doesn't help that these companies pass around money with eachother and government entities all the time so they don't tecnically need any of our business to function. Which enables them to pull this kinda shit and wait for us to get mad enough or to put up with it.

My concern in the long run is that over time the newer generations arent going to ever learn/know how freeing personal computing used to be. They'll gradually put up with worser and worser and this intrusive encroach on our technological freedom is going to look terribly different in the coming decades.

Yeah if they hit critical mass the quality drops significantly. I've bookmark a handful of my niche subs that haven't hit that point yet but I saw it all the time over the years on there. Even something as straight forward as a liminal space, not as a term but there is a lot of writings on the topic, subreddit just turns into everybody posting pictures of there closets and and any old building.

On the basis that one person may or may not abuse the situation all trans people deserve to be accused and/or treated as second class citizens? There are current real world incidences of cisgender women getting harrased and assaulted in these very "safe zones" under the guise of protecting cisgender women.

The exclusion of trans women from these spaces creates a culture where some people are on the lookout for those who "don't belong", and this is leading to women who don't fit visual/societal definitions of feminity and womanhood to getting singled out and harrased in these very spaces.

Trans women are not "the other gender" as you put it, they are women; trans men are men. Bad actors who want to assault women or vulnerable people will do that any way they see fit, their gender identity is irrelevant. Being inclusive to trans people does not eliminate safe spaces, they are also deserving of being protected.

While there is definitely an oddly surprising amount of z'ers who seem to barely get tech, I would like to biasedly add that the older of us are largely tech literate, of course exceptions apply. We grew up with computers in the home and at the very least know our way around a file browser. But some folks just a few years under me don't have any other tech then there phones and don't seem to care or even think about pc's.

Got a new job recently and the other person training with me didn't own any kind of pc and said that she didn't like them. It was weird to me I kept asking her like but what about when you need one and it didn't seem that she ever did. As a tech addled fiend I can't fully comprehend this, I can only get by with my phone for so long on certain tasks before I put it down and pull out my computer. But to each their own I guess?

Now, I think a mixture of the two formats looks best to the eye, fightiiinng.

I can attest to the high skill ceiling, felt like a complete noob for my first like 10 hours playing; That is not meant to be a discouraging statement though. I haven't had this much fun playing an fps since the hay days of Overwatch(1).

They really can't even see that how they view and talk about AI is almost identical to how people idealize finding god and worship. They've already fully replaced one for another.

I'd largely say no. As others have said in this thread yes other jobs also have high risk rates but I believe those are all false equivalencies. Cops have a level of power in their profession that is unlike any other job. Every one of them knows exactly what they are getting into and they agree to put your life on the line for the law. If you want to play enforcer then you get to deal with the consequences of that role. On a human level I feel empathy towards any death, I'm not a monster, but no I don't feel any worse for them in contrast to the loss of life in any other first line job.
