Canadian prime minister suspends trade talks with U.S., setting new 50% tariffs in motion

Reply in thread

You can't really do anything diplomatic when the other side continually showcases they lack any respect for diplomacy whatsoever.

The moment the man in charge literally called himself an idiot when asking who'd ever sign a deal like CUSMA, it was an admission that they don't care. We got hit with tariffs for reasons that weren't based on facts. We got rid of the digital services tax as a concession already. We already had the CRTC roll back a decision to triple financial contributions to Canadian content from online streaming services. Then came the Gordie Howe Bridge dispute where we made concessions for tolls on a bridge we paid for. We were going to concede even more with the removal of alcohol bans.

Yet, it's just now that Carney and the Liberals realise that this isn't worth it? Any progressive in this country could have told you this from the get go.

What is a rule you completely live by?

Being mindful of others, almost to the point of it being debilitating at times.

Was hanging out with friend from out of town and their parents recently, and I suggested we go to ice cream parlour after a meal. They were all too full, but when I decided to change my mind seeing it would just be about me if we went, they insisted we go regardless.

It was embarrassing enough to me that we were cutting out their time for something that'd only benefit me, but it only got worse when the place I suggested had an unusually long line that they insisted we stay in despite me saying I wouldn't want to waste their time.

I know it was done because they wanted to treat me, but an experience like that is just against the values I live by.

How do I balance out my diet with preventing food waste?

Reply in thread

That first point I think really helps a lot on it's own. I grew up poor (and still am pretty poor admittedly), and I was told to eat pretty much everything on my plate. Eating rice? Gotta eat every last grain. Mother burnt the frozen pizza rock solid? Had to eat it. Food you don't like was for supper? You're not leaving that table until you finish it.

While my parents would use the "kids in Africa" line, something that arguably hit me more was my Nana comparing things to our ancestors during the Depression.

I'll see what I can do about containers next time around. I might also ask them about how to give away leftovers to people near the nearby shelter.

Genuinely not an excuse. It just hurts knowing it'll all be thrown away and it feels like you have to do something about it.

I do think changing my mindset to "it's wasted just as much if I eat it when I don't need it" and "I'm treating myself as a waste bin if I eat this when I don't need it" will really help going forward for the diet seeing that responsibility of eating is shifted from me. However, now it's just a matter of how to get it to people that do need it when it comes to my social conscience.

In summary, I try to get it to people, and if I can't, I need to accept it'll be thrown out and that it isn't my fault if that happens. I'll be getting in touch with the organisation that runs the event and see what can be done about this going forward.
