What light novel(s) have you read last week, and what do you think about it? [August 17 - August 23]

<Taking My Reincarnation One Step at a Time: No One Told Me There Would Be Monsters!> - Volume 10 by KAYA - ★★★★☆, 182 MynePages™ - A nice ending to the series, even though it felt somewhat rushed at the very end. I think one more bonus chapter after the epilogue with the "event" actually happening should have brought it to a better end than just leaving it open. I think the readers deserved that much. But still, going by how few series actually end, instead of just fizzling out once sales drop, I think it's commendable that we get a finished series for once. Still, would have loved to see one extra chapter. That's going to be one of those that will continue to bother me whenever I will think back on the series.

Crunchyroll's Net Profit Falls By Over 60%: What This Might Mean for Anime Fans - Anime Corner

Reply in thread

Where to start. They have so many issues that there is something in there for everyone:

  • price hikes and end of the free tier
  • declining quality of subs and the use of AI for subs
  • activist localization slash “woke” changes to the subs when humans translate <--- with the previous point, now both the pro-AI and anti-ai crowd are unhappy
  • data breach (at least one, but I think they had two)
  • Funimation customers got fucked since they lost access to purchased content after the merger with Crunchy
  • monopolistic tendencies and general corporate greed and tactics
  • comment sections got removed because people dared to be negative

And possibly a myriad others. I don't think I've ever heard Crunchy mentioned in a positive way.

The opening sequence is also excellent. It’s packed with references to various cultural works (Spiderman, LotR, Nirvana, and a bunch of others), and I probably didn’t even catch half of them.

the ones I recognized:

Footlose

Leon The Professional

Dumb&Dumber

Trainspotting

Nirvana Nevermind Was wrong here. It was Trainspotting, which also fits better with the film setting.

The Usual Suspects

Breakfast Club

The Evil Dead (maybe, its a reach)

Lord of the Rings

Fight Club

Resident Evil Extinction

Spiderman 3

Pulp Fiction

Wednesday Adams

Saturday Night Feaver

Fallen Angels

A Better Tomorrow

Chinatown

Conclave

Project A

Ready of Not

Blade Runner

Coffeee and Cigarettes

Flashdance

Stand by Me

The King of Comedy

The Yellow Handkerchief

Pierrot le Fou

Night On Earth

Farewell Friend

Blue Spring

Either way, anime YouTuber will have a field day with this one. I can't wait to see a side by side of the entire opening with the original shots.

edit: thanks to the internet sleuths I have some reference material as well and references that I missed.

Still so many scenes missing...

I love funsubs so much!

Counterpoint: They are not commercial products, and there is nothing stopping groups from just abandoning series mid-season. For example, Komi Can't Communicate got a sub that translated all her written text in place and then just dropped it after a couple of episodes.

I've seen two arguments during that time.

  1. as fan subs, those are entirely done voluntarily and the people behind it owe nothing to the community

  2. they shouldn't have started the series if they weren't committed to completing the season. Other groups sat out on the series because of that.
