Jury acquits delivery driver of main charge in shooting of YouTube prankster

There is little to celebrate here.

Victim still got charged with a felony after spending 5 months incarcerated waiting for trial, and has to wait another month in jail to find out if the judge will overturn his final charge.

Self-described "Goon" still walking around on the streets getting paid for harassing and assaulting strangers. As a bonus, nearly doubled subscribers.

This case is exactly why DA's level stack multiple felonies in these cases.

Jury: Well this is clearly self-defense, but he also probably pushed it too far so we don't think he is innocent. Better just give him one felony.

For those that don't know, the American courts have interpreted the constitutional "right to bear arms" as void for felons. This guy who was just acknowledged to have used his firearm in self-defense, is no longer allowed to own a firearm for his own protection.

YouTube prankster says he had no idea he was scaring man who shot him

Your honor, we the members of the jury request additional information regarding local harassment and assault laws related to the 6'5" self-described "goon" so that we may recommend charges.

Additionally, we recommend the charges against the defendant be reduced to misdemeanor reckless discharge of a firearm.

This kid learned nothing from being shot. He still thinks it is okay to bully random strangers, and is already planning his next prank. If your friends like pranks and you play pranks on each other that is fine.

If you get in someone's face and start demanding they stop thinking of your privates, especially after repeated warnings to back up, then you are inciting violence and sometimes it is going to succeed.

Is Lemmy more likely to succeed than Voat? Why or why not?

As I remember it, the Rexit that caused Voat to become so large was primarily composed disenfranchised conservatives, trolls, and those with extreme views. Even moderately conservative users were likely to feel out of place on Voat.

This Rexit seems primarily composed of disenfranchised mods, app users, and content producers. In my opinion, the much larger variety of people swapping to the Fediverse give it a much more stable base.

When they first started joining Reddit, I thought of them as FaceBookers fleeing their parents and grandparents.

That said, I am part of this new wave here. I have tried 3 separate times over the last few years to join the Fediverse but always ended up on instances that lacked content that was relevant to me. It almost went the same way this time when I joined kbin.social but I decided to try lemmy.world also and found a lot more communities that interested me here.

Incidentally, as I understand it kbin.social should have been fine for me but was temporarily suppressing the feeds from other instances to help deal with the new wave.

After bad publicity, tiny Texas speed trap town dissolves 50-person police department

This article could probably use some context as it is pretty misleading currently.

Coffee City is about 25 miles from Tyler, a city of about 100,000 people. You can't buy liquor in Tyler stores, only beer and wine. Until relatively recently, there wasn't even liquor sold in bars in Tyler. For the last 40 to 50 years, Coffee City has been the main place to go for liquor. Coffee City is basically two liquor stores on the far end of a mile long bridge. The article mentions a couple other stores in town, but I didn't notice them last time I was there.

I am not a fan of the excessive Police State that the US has become. Furthermore, it is very clear that there is some kind of corruption is going on in the Coffee City police force itself where they are hiring problem cops.

That said, these cops aren't there to police Coffee City residents. They are there to catch the constant stream of drunk drivers coming in from Tyler. I don't have the numbers but I wouldn't be surprised if 95% of their income is from DWIs given to people crossing the bridge.

In this particular case, discharging all those officers is probably a significant public danger. People are probably going to end up dying over this if the county or state don't send officers to cover the bridge area.

Denver experimented with giving people $1,000 a month. It reduced homelessness and increased full-time employment, a study found.

I am a fan of a UBI (Universal Basic Income) but these limited CBI (Conditional Basic Income) trials are not really comparable to a long-term implementation of either version.

Taking a specific number of people and giving them cash is certainly going to improve their lives. Giving cash to everyone in a city or state, including new arrival, is asking for local inflation and a population explosion. If the area is empty and has abundant natural resources that can be converted into jobs it will probably work out, at least for a while. If it is a major city with most of the resources and land already in use, and there is not much demand for workers, then the program's budget is likely to be overrun fairly quickly.

Like you guessed it is a cultural icon. The emperor that united their home world used it.

In Star Trek lore, the Klingon Kahless created the bat'leth around CE 625. According to Klingon mythology, he formed the blade by dropping a length of his hair into some lava from inside the Kri'stak Volcano, then cooling, shaping, and hardening it in the lake of Lursor.[5] He then united Qo'noS, the Klingon homeworld, by killing a tyrant named Molor with the weapon, which became known as the Sword of Kahless.

The dictation software we have is pretty shitty though.

As someone who used dictation software when said software needed to be trained first and also trained its users how to speak more clearly, it always amazes me when I hear people say things like this.

The problem is human speech is lazy and inaccurate. Half of the time I have to listen to a voice clip there are two or three words in the clip that are barely intelligible. If I don't catch it by the third pass I stop and just guess by context. It is the same thing the AWESOME dictation software we have today does, but saves me the time and effort and gives the sender a chance to fix their own mumbles.

Of course, I'm one of those people whose voicemail message used to be, "Don't leave me a message unless your call went straight to voicemail. I will see your missed call and call you back."
