fediverse soon

The beauty of the fediverse is that the last panel can't happen.

We control our own instances. There's no world where admins wouldn't defederate from any Facebook attempt to barge in.

Maybe a few larger instances sell out, but users hold the power here now. If an admin betrays our trust, we'll just make a new instance.

The REAL Reason Games Aren't Fun Anymore. According To NEUROSCIENCE. (And how to fix it)

This is an older video, but has some good points.

To the first point about developers making safe games for profits, I have to say I'm impressed with how far Unreal Engine has progressed in the last few years. It's much easier to make a professional looking indie game using UE5 than ever before, and I really hope we see a resurgence in good games based on fun concepts in the near future. As much as I hated Fortnite, the massive influx of cash really helped drive UE development forward.

And as far as the overstimulation stuff goes... I've been busier than I used to be recently, so the game time I do have now does seem a lot more fun. I'm not "chasing the dragon" with games anymore, because I barely have time to play the games that I want to play. And I find it easier to walk away from grindy games because I enjoy doing other shit with my life.

My #1 piece of advice for gamers is to just start working out for 30 minutes every other day. Not only does it improve your physical state, but getting up and forcing yourself to do something else that isn't based on your brains reward center, even for a short while, makes coming back to your game that much better.

The choice

Reposting is a long standing tradition on Reddit... I don't see a reason that should change on Lemmy.

It's not just a question about memes. If you see content on Reddit for your favorite topic or game, you should 100% replicate that data over to Lemmy.

If there's a good duplication of content in both places, it makes it easier to move completely over to Lemmy.

Do you think the guys on the titanic submarine will be rescued?

Reply in thread

That's what I'm more upset about.

Who gives a shit about a couple of billionaires. Why does this have to be a world-wide news story? Why don't we care about the 100s of refugees that die all the time in maritime accidents and why are those things dominating the news?

Time and time again we give the rich people all of our attention. Fuck that. We shouldn't be letting the media direct our attention like this.

Was the lemmyverse/threadiverse aware that Mastodon has been convulsed for the past 2 days?

Reply in thread

I think there's probably a reasonable explanation for this. The entire idea of Mastodon was built around getting away from companies like Meta. The admins arent going to just do a 180 on that.

It's more likely that Meta wants to do a similar thing as Truth Social and they are doing some consultation work. It would be good money and I don't blame them for taking it.

Hello! Can we normalize a few things?

Reply in thread

I've been ready to leave Reddit for a long time. I'm not angry at Reddit... It's more just continued disappointed. The site was built off of effort from the communities but the corporation won't listen to us for guidance and changes.

The only thing I worry about is that most people won't even hear of alternatives like Lemmy and that will impact adoption. I fear that only the degenerates and extremests will be the ones to make the changes. I hope that isn't how it plays out.

PSA: Lemmy.ml is not Lemmy

Reply in thread

I couldn't have said it better.

I haven't seen that much of a problem on Lemmy.ml, so I think you really have to dig down into it to find the dirt. I think some people have a problem with the admins political views, so they try to smear them any chance they can. But those same admin made lemmygrad as a place to kinda keep all that stuff separate from the main instance.

Sure, it seeps over sometimes, but the bulk of the content on lemmy.ml is just standard shit. Reddit was no different. Most subreddits were normal and there were a few ones that were full of imbalanced idiots. That didn't make people leave the site completely. We just didn't sub to the subreddits we didn't like. In a similar vein, just block the communities here that you don't want to see.

As far as the "too many communities" discussion goes... we're never going to win that battle. The majority of people out there aren't willing to make the change to the fediverse because of this one issue. Most likely a true Reddit alternative will be made and most normies will move there in time.

It's great that Lemmy has gained some popularity, but there are too many issues here for it ever to become as big as something like Reddit.

Reddit repost bots are spam, and that needs to be stopped.

Reply in thread

Thanks for blocking that instance.

I tried to explain to their admin why the entire concept was bad for the fediverse but they didn't seem to understand.

People can do whatever they want with their instances, but something like that should defederate themselves and live in a void.

That isn't the way to try and build content or community over here. We have the high ground. We don't need to stoop down to their level.

Should Lemmy have Karma?

Reply in thread

Karma is a great method of driving interaction, but like you've highlighted, it can result in a lot of unwanted behaviors.

Other social media is a good example of what to be avoided. People are driven to gather more followers and their content devolves into the lowest common denominator rapidly.

I wouldn't mind some form of recognition for people that contribute good content to communities, but I don't know exactly what that would look like.

As far as karma goes, we have a technological limitation in the fediverse, where your karma would be limited to the instance your user account is registered on. They could figure out how to make it work, but I'm just not sure it's worth the effort. We have a lot of other things to focus on atm.

Hotel > AirBNB

Reply in thread

My problem is that people talk as if these are the only options.

There are other services, like VRBO, that do the same thing and usually have the same properties. AirBNB is garbage now, so just use an alternative that doesn't have the same bad policies and high fees.
