This seems reasonable. I think eventually the duplicates will become manageable as the more active popular communities will be easier to spot.

Hopefully the defederating between instances doesn't become a pattern. It's hard to imagine this catching on if users have to micromanage their communities.

Also might be helpful to know that you can set your default sort type under you profile settings.
