Sen. Bob Menendez and wife indicted on bribery charges; DOJ seizes gold bars and $500,000 | CNN Politics
Those behind this campaign simply cannot accept that a first-generation Latino American from humble beginnings could rise to be a U.S. Senator and serve with honor and distinction. Even worse, they see me as an obstacle in the way of their broader political goals
I get that you have to pretend that you're innocent, but this is the same race-baiting conspiracy bullshit that comes out of the right-wing wackos. Fuck this guy.

'Personality-driven' influencer esports league revealed, immediately implodes over NFT controversy
Reply in thread
I think the article is fine. It's just the reality that makes no sense. A bunch of social media celebrities agreed to join an esports league where the celebrities would manage the teams. People could buy a pass for each celebrity that would let them vote on team decisions and give them other benefits. The company selling the passes used blockchain authentication for them. They were also, separately, involved in NFTs. People saw blockchain and NFT and thought "wait a minute, the passes are NFTs? Aren't NFTs a big scam? These passes are a scam!" Then the celebrities saw the outrage and said "What?! No one told me there would be crypto-blockchain-NFTs!" They then dropped out of the league and it was indefinitely postponed. Unless by "actual problem" you meant something that was meaningful in anyway to anyone not directly involved in this nonsense. In that case, no, there was none of that.

I love being a Millennial. Being a Millennial is great. Being a Millennial doesn't make me yearn for death. 2000$ to exist is a steal
He owns his own business and is doing this by choice. They don't go into numbers, but the fact that the article is titled "The Affluent Homeless" makes me think he's not struggling. The guy is atypical, but the people saying he's a socialist or he's being crushed by capitalism are reading their own politics into this.

Trump Asks Supreme Court to Intervene Over Claim of Absolute Immunity
Reply in thread
Don't be silly. They believe that the president would only have total immunity until they were impeached by Congress. So Biden would also have to execute anyone in Congress that would vote for impeachment. After that, he should be fine. Totally normal democracy in action.

“Once the [tactical units] get the clearance to go into that residence, we might have an update on him,” Hernandez said.
Sounds like they don't think he left the burning house with the collapsed roof. If that's the case, there's a good chance that he's dead.

getting someone sacked for having a bad day is a scummy thing to do
It is, but only because losing a job means that person might now lose access to food, housing, and healthcare. That's a really steep price to pay for what could be an isolated incident. But that's not something to lay at the feet of the person tipping here. They are also a victim of the structure we've created. They need to choose between shutting up and accepting verbal abuse in their own home or speaking out and possibly triggering events that ruin the delivery driver's life? Neither of those choices are acceptable.

Exactly. So I think it would have been more helpful to just jump to the explanation. Just say "But protests are meant to be disruptive because that is how they draw attention to the issue being protested." There is no need to question the knowledge of the commenter. Just present the information that you think they don't have. Even if the person you're replying to isn't interested, the info will be there for others and may lead to more conversation.

Canada ranked as 2nd best country in the world.
Reply in thread
"Quality of Life" was a category on the survey, although it was only one of ten. Additionally, they were mostly asking the people who were benefitting the most from their society:
a survey of over 17,000 people from 36 countries – including business leaders, middle-class or higher college-educated individuals and “nationally representative” citizens of each country
So I imagine there were a lot of folks who disagreed with the final rankings, but their opinions were mostly considered irrelevant.

Keeping Up to Date with Arsenal News on Lemmy
Do we really need everything that's on r/gunners, though? From the image, the Mari story was also here and the two Timber stories are really "nothing has changed" stories. The only one that seems like it would improve this community was the preseason schedule. We could definitely do better, but I don't think this needs to literally be a copy of r/gunners.

do you know how protests work
This does not sound like an honest attempt at communication. Why would you even ask this unless you thought the person did not know? Yet you don't offer any explanation of how you think protests work that might actually create a conversation. It may not be what you intended, but I interpreted your question as nothing more than a personal insult to the person who made the original comment. The equivalent of replying, "you don't know what you're talking about." That sort of reply might be true, and I would probably even agree with it in the comment you linked, but it's still not helpful in any way and kind of makes you seem like a jerk looking for an argument. So, to answer your question, I will often downvote a comment like this because it does nothing to make a positive contribution, and I would likely not explain why because I try to limit my interactions with people who are acting like argumentative jerks.

Titan sub: What happens next after sounds detected in search
Reply in thread
It's also possible that the vessel is at or near the surface
NPR has someone on that had done the trip and said there are multiple systems in place to surface the sub in an emergency, including some that happen automatically. So there's a very good chance that they're at the surface, but still very hard to find because it's a 20-ft sub in a huge search area. And they're still running out of air because the hatch must be opened from the outside.

Fox News Chyron Calls Biden a ‘Wannabe Dictator’

I think all the 24-hour news outlets are garbage, but this doesn't seem like their regular nonsense. Even the article states that this was "unusually strong" for Fox News. So, either they are turning up the volume of their rhetoric, or someone behind the scenes let slip the kind of thoughts that are behind their presentation of events but they usually try to keep hidden in public. Both of those possibilities seem worth noting as long as these types of news sources are so prominent.

Trump Wants Shoplifters to Be Shot
This article doesn't have much info about what was said, but it does have a link to an article with the quote.
"We will immediately stop all of the pillaging and theft. Very simply: If you rob a store, you can fully expect to be shot as you are leaving that store," he said Friday during a speech to California Republicans.
His comments drew applause from members of his party inside the Anaheim convention and he loudly said “shot” again for emphasis.
