Console(s) to TV

Hi all,

I've recently been getting to all the amazing games I missed in my childhood due to being in 'a Nintendo household'. It's been amazing experiencing these time capsules of entertainment on their original hardware.

The 'trouble' I'm however having is the age old issue of video inputs and outputs. I picked up an old Sony TV that has a bunch of inputs so I can connect all my systems at once and don't have to replug things. The issue is that it's become a bit of a mess due to the TVs limited inputs:

  • Dreamcast -> Composite
  • PS2 -> Component
  • GC -> Composite to SCART
  • Wii U -> HDMI

This results in wildly different video quality across all systems.

How do you keep your consoles connected? HDMI mod them all and connect them to a modern TV? Do you even do that or do you just swap out whatever you are playing at the moment? Or should I just play everything on PC.

Most online posts talk only about getting the best video quality from one connected console, but the prospect of having to buy 4 OSSCs seems a bit daunting.

Bonus question: hoe do you manage the Audio?

EDIT: Thanks all for your ideas and opinions. I feel quite dumb that I have never thought of putting a video switch before an upscaler. I Think I'll be going that route as it seems the most convient and cost effective. I'll also definitely be looking into the Retrotink.

Wii U SD card 'write locked' fix

Hi all, leaving this post here for future reference, in case anyone needs it. My Wii U was giving issues when launching into Aroma to the lines of 'The SD Card cannot be written to'. This caused the entire system to freeze in my case. You will read plenty of tales online about 'blowing into the slot' or using a piece of paper. But for me what fixed it permanently was bridging 2 pads on the SD card reader slot itself.

For this fix you need to almost fully disassemble the console. I used this handy guide from iFixit. Note, I found that on step 13, you don't actually have to remove the CPU/GPU heat sink, you can just leave it in place and maneuver the EMI shielding around it. (Be very carefull with the antenna cables!!)

When you have the motherboard itself visible, you need to bridge (aka. put some solder connecting these pads) the WP1 and WP2 pads. See the images of my console below for reference. Be carefull not to accidentally bridge any other pins. You can verify this if you want to with a multimeter after.

This fixed any read-only related issues.

PS. For any Linux users who are coming up against all the online posts suggesting "guiformat" program, the SD association also has an official tool for Linux. It worked for me, KDE Partition manager didn't format it properly for the Wii U's tastes. The SD tool can be found here

Happy modding!

What Git clients do you use?

I'm wondering if you use any (graphical) clients to manage your Git, and if so, what client you use.

I myself have to use git professionally across all 3 major OS-es, and I currently use Sourcetree on Windows and macOS, and the Git tools built-in into IntelliJ on Linux.

Have given MaGit a try, but just couldn't get all the shortcuts to stick in my mind.

Interested to hear your experiences!

Distro or Desktop like "classic" macOS

I'm talking about the System 7/8/9 days of macOS. I really like the aesthetic and workflow in the older macOS versions (call me a masochist) and I'm hoping if someone knows of something that already exists. I know there are plenty of skins/themes that hearken back to Windows 95/98, but most of what you find online when you look for "Linux like macOS 9" is things that make it look like modern macOS.

Home(lab) router advice

I just recently got 1 gigabit up/down at home when they put in fiber. Now I'm looking for a router/firewall to use. I run a homelab with a few VMs.

I was looking at getting a Cisco router to tinker with, as I've just finished a course on IOS. What routers would you recommend (2nd hand) for less than 150€? Is Cisco even feasible at this price point or should I just get a mini pc and run pfsense/opnsense?

I've looked at the ISR900 and it seems to meet my requirements, but I am not sure if it also offers a web interface, which would be quite useful for me.

Bit of an unstructured post but I hope you'll be able to help me regardless.

EDIT: I ended up getting a mikrotik hAP ac3 router. It seems to meet my requirements and after trying the routerOS demo they have up I decided that it would work for me.

Issue with internet jitter/dropout

Hi all, first time posting for tech support on lemmy!

I've recently switched ISPs to now have a gigabit connection at my home, but we've been experiencing some weird issues with it. When i run a speedtest, I get my full gigabit (or close enough) speeds and most of the time it works perfectly. But ever so often, it just completly drops all packets. When downloading a file for example it can randomly drop the speed to 0 b/sec and you have to restart the download in order to get it working again. Same with website loading, when it happens when loading a website, just half of the website gets loaded and I am missing images/styling/etc.

Now I run my own EdgeRouter X behind my ISP provided router. I have a nagging feeling this could be causing my issues, but with my previous ISP I was running the same setup and it worked flawlessly (albeit with a different ISP provided router).

Have any of you experienced something like this before?

Edit: thanks for all the quick responses everyone! I will look into your suggestions and update the post if/when I've found my solution.

Edit 2: Fixed the problem. As always, when in doubt, it's the DNS. My ISP router did not come with any DNS settings preset. I set it to the same DNS as my EdgeRouter and my problems went away. I hope this helps some of you facing the same issue. Thanks for your responses!
