Federal judge shuts down Texas attorney general's voter fraud investigation

Some excerpts:

In a 78 page ruling, U.S. District Judge Xavier Rodriguez found that a key part of the Texas 2021 omnibus voter legislation is confusing, vague, overly broad, violates freedom of speech along with the 14th Amendment and there is no actual problem of illegal vote harvesting.

"Witnesses were particularly uncertain about how to interpret the terms “physical presence” and “compensation” — neither of which is defined in the statute — and how the Canvassing Restriction impacts organizers’ ability to provide voting assistance during their in-person interactions with voters," Rodriguez wrote.

Under the ruling, the Texas Attorney General’s office can no longer conduct investigations based on the provision. The AG’s office cited it when it recently conducted a series of raids on the homes of Latino voting rights activists and a Democratic candidate for the Texas House. The lawsuit brought by multiple Texas voting rights organizations asked for relief from several parts of SB1. But Saturday’s ruling only concerned the state’s attempt to block assistance with absentee ballots.

Major new addition to Fort Worth Botanic Garden expected to break ground in November

If you've never been to the Fort Worth Botanical Gardens, I would definitely recommend it.

This new addition is geared towards kids, but it sounds like what will be called the Baker Martin Family Garden will be a super cool place to visit once it is completed.

The garden is woven with teaching moments, enhancing the Fort Worth Botanic Garden’s philosophy of nature play, Richardson said.

The garden has a solar system theme, with Earth, Venus, Mercury and Mars exhibits featuring misters to cool people off and create rainbows that children can enjoy, Richardson said.

The last planet featured in the garden is Jupiter. The area around Jupiter will include a shade structure with musical instruments and play equipment that represent galaxies.

The garden also will include more terrestrial features, such as native Texas plants, a plateau and bodies of water.

“We have gone on missions to go out and find the plants that you would see at Big Bend,” Richardson said.

Comanche Peak adds years to operating licenses

cross-posted from: https://feddit.nl/post/18850819

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has renewed the operating licenses of Comanche Peak Units 1 and 2 for an additional 20 years.

Unit 1’s operating license now expires on February 8, 2050, and Unit 2’s on February 2, 2053.

The two-unit Comanche Peak nuclear power plant in Glen Rose, Texas, is operated by Luminant. Units 1 and 2 are pressurized-water reactors.

Unit 1’s initial license was issued on April 17, 1990, and was set to expire on February 8, 2030. Unit 2 was first licensed on April 6, 1993, with an expiration date of February 2, 2033.

The review: The review of Comanche Peak's license renewal application proceeded on two tracks, according to the NRC. A safety evaluation report was issued in March, and a final supplemental environmental impact statement was issued in April.

These documents, as well as other information regarding the renewal application, are available on the NRC website, which also contains information about the license renewal process.
