So I did figure out that yes, [#Mastodon](https://jammer.social/tags/Mastodon) can federate [#Lemmy](https://jammer.social/tags/Lemmy) and [#Kbin](https://jammer.social/tags/Kbin) content. The problem

I tried my best to use mastodon as a platform to post to lemmy/kbin but ran into a major problem: nested comments get lost to the ether, and there's no way for you to reply to them using the same account.

Because of this, and basically this alone, I decided to forfeit mastodon all together and opt for a self hosted lemmy instance. I just got it set up and running this evening and so far, I'm not looking back.

Might set up another mastodon instance later, but that's if I start to miss it.

Incredibly Lost and frustrated trying to set up self hosted lemmy server

After a looooong day of trial and error and basically learning all of this from scratch, I am happy to say I have finally gotten my own instance up and running!

HUGE credits goes to @[email protected] for creating a script to install Lemmy in just a few simply commands. Definitely reccomend checking out his work if you're brand new to all of this: https://lemmy.world/post/249889

Although I ended up taking the "easy way out", I do want to take a moment to thank all of you for taking the time to comment and contribute time to help me sort out this problem. This is such a warm and welcoming communtiy and I really appreciate it. Cheers from SoCal!

That sounds to be the most attractive way to fit into the fediverse the way it's set up right now. I really like how kbin has support for microblogging and link aggregation however I find it hard to interoperate between different platforms like you can on lemmy/mastodon.

Once a platform nails all of this, I feel like that will be the thing to use in terms of a "master account to rule them all" type deal. That's what I want anyway >:)

Self Hosted Lemmy instance comments terribly out of sync?

Yeah, I definitely agree that open communities was/is a mistake. If a server is that large, it should be admin only. They can always run polls to gauge interest before making new communities.

Communities are the biggest problem. One solution would be to make community names more like a federation signature that only allows one community to have that exact name. Example: if lemmy.world has a community called !AITA, and you try to make a community on beehaw with the same !AITA name, it would not allow it and say "sorry that community name has already been registered by another instance".

Of course, the major issue with this idea is that one could defederate with lemmy.world, in this example, and make the community name anyway, then refederate. Who would keep the name? That's why I don't think this solution is ideal, but it's fun to share ideas and something to think about.
