Don't you think kbin has really gone downhill since the good old days?
FWIW I was on Reddit for twelve years and people complained about the good old days twelve years ago.

Welp, that about does it for Reddit for me.

Why would anyone want to be a moderator?
@CaspianXI I've always been of the opinion that if something you want doesn't exist, go and do it yourself. That's why I've modded and continued to do so-- things don't just happen on their own.
I know there are some power trippers that just like to be the boss of things, but I'm assuming most are like me, who just want a happy and functional community to exist and thrive.

/kbin - preview of upcoming changes
@ernest just want to thank you for all of the hard work you've done and are doing. Kbin is something really special and you've been going above and beyond with it.

I haven't heard it called Rexxit yet, and I wholeheartedly support the naming convention.

What's your Sci-Fi unpopular opinion?
I went to film school, and had to watch 2001 like five times in classes, breaking down every little element of it. And you know what? I also think it's boring and pretentious AF. The fx and production design are incredible, and parts of it are good enough, but other than that it's just Kubrick demonstrating how much smarter he thought he was than everyone else (I am not a fan of his films, if that wasn't clear enough).
I did enjoy the book a lot, though! If you haven't read it I think you'll be surprised how it tells the same story, just better.

He created the site as a for profit entity, but later sold it-- it became shitty after he sold it, it was pretty decent before.

What app do you use for Mastodon?
@runswithjedi I use Fedilab on Android and it works great. Very happy with it.

Will there really be a big influx of users on the 30th?
@Crylos if even half of a single percentage of Reddit users come over, that would be a staggering number of new users.

How do you find (fun & interesting) accounts to to follow on Mastadon?
Write an introduction post (and make sure you hashtag it #introduction). Use lots of hashtags in your posts, it will link you with other folks using the same ones. Jokey ones aren't very useful, try to keep them general.
Follow liberally (like the other commenter said, you can just unfollow if they stop being interesting, retoot generously (as there is no algorithms, retooting is the only way posts gain traction (and people will notice if you're retooting them), follow any hashtags that seem interesting.
Also, since nobody else mentioned it, always alt-text any images you shared, not only because it is courteous and expected for you to do so, but it will help you get followers, because many people won't follow people who don't use alt-text.
Oh, and the same goes with content warnings!
It's these little things that make good Mastodon members and will keep people engaged with you.
(You can watch how people who do well on the platform format their posts to validate what I've said).
Mastodon is awesome, I love it. Good luck!
PS: I almost forgot to mention your instance! Check out your local timeline to see what's going on there. If there isn't anything interesting there maybe move to a more active instance, or one that reflects your interests.
Sorry this is so long, I kept adding things.

What piece of kit or setup represents the pinnacle of your hobby/profession?
As a vinyl DJ, I'd say the Wheels of Steel: the legendary Technics SL-1200 direct drive turntable. Though they make newer ones, the vintage ones can go for a grand a piece (if it was in excellent shape) or as little as $500 a piece of they're beaten up. With servicing those things will run forever, they're the gold standard for a reason.

@PixelPassport Artemis will be here before you know it.

Artemis is experimenting with a Discovery Mode for your feed ✋✨
@hariette I love the idea, but not so much having it in my main timeline (it can feel like "suggested content" that way). Maybe if it was segregated into a separate tab/dropdown, like new and all? I'd definitely use it then.

Is there a video that will tell me how to set up our own server as if I were 5 years old?

There are various web hosting companies that you can pay like $15/mo to do all of the work for you and maintain it. Would definitely recommend that if you're not experienced with this kind of stuff, especially if you're planning on having other users in your instance.

Will it ever be possible for kbin to federate with PeerTube?
@NotTheOnlyGamer If we can get Peertube and Pixelfed integrated that would cover all of the bases for me.

Never thought I would get emotional about losing an app
@Girlparts I'm running PowerDelete Suite right now and it is very bittersweet for me. 12 years of heavy participation, poof, gone like dry leaves in the breeze.

It was fighting words to say Kubrick was overrated in film school-- people would get really mad about it! (I admit, I do really like the Killing, but that's about it).
And I saw the Matrix multiple times as well! It's okay to like action movies, and sometimes they even have real value too!

@Gamers_Mate I hadn't heard about it before that day. I started looking for Reddit alternatives as soon as the whole API thing happened (which I found out due to a popup in RIF). I did have a Mastodon account, but didn't really understand the Fediverse until sometime this week.
