Thoughts?

This afternoon I became fascinated

By the remarkable possibility
That thoughts, when no one is looking,
May quietly wander away.

Mine certainly do.

I leave them stacked quite neatly,
One beside another,
Like books upon a shelf.

Yet later...

One is gone.

I look beneath the sofa.

Nothing.

I search the hallway,
The closets,
The quiet corners
Where forgotten things
Prefer to wait.

Nothing there, either.

I begin another thought,
Determined this one
Will remain exactly
Where I leave it.

It behaves beautifully.

For almost a minute.

Then I discover
It has vanished too.

Now this would trouble
Almost anyone.

Except...

Each missing thought
Returns before evening.

None arrive tired.

None arrive frightened.

Each one comes back
Looking somehow...
larger.

As though it has wandered
Through magnificent places
It has no words
To describe.

I've questioned them,
Of course.

Not one has answered.

They merely settle down
As if nothing unusual
Had happened at all.

Only one clue
Has ever presented itself.

Whenever you happen
To pass nearby,

They all come home
At once.

I've stopped trying
To solve the mystery.

Some riddles,
I think,

Become less wonderful
The moment
They're explained.

So if another thought
Quietly slips away tomorrow...

I hope
It finds you.

Because every one
That ever has...

Returns believing
The world
Is kinder
Than it remembered.

[OC] The Stray Cat's Feast

Story: This cat hung out with us while our daughter was in Future soldier training (FST). Even though there was a caretaker watching over the feral colony, this one chose to be friendly and have a meal near the car with us weekly.

I saw you stop. You thought I’d hide, like shadows always do, but something warm and gentle stayed the moment I saw you.

You didn’t call, you didn’t chase, you didn’t cross my line, you placed a feast upon a cloth as if this world were kind.

A napkin laid on roughened street, a table set for me, no throne was ever dressed so well as that small courtesy.

I kept my face the way I must— composed and still and wise— but gratitude was spilling out behind my careful eyes.

For I am just a passing thing the daylight seldom keeps, a life that moves through parking lots and learns the night in leaps.

Yet you, today, with quiet hands and nothing asked in claim, made one small curb feel less like chance and more like somewhere named.

So if you felt me watching you before you walked away, it wasn’t fear that held me still— it was the need to stay.

To memorize that simple act, that kindness left so neat: a human heart that paused long enough to set a cat a feast.

I'm Too Sexy

When I woke this morning and found him posing like this, the song I'm Too Sexy immediately came to mind.

So with apologies, I rewrote it Toad style! 🐸

I’m too sexy for this log
Too sexy for this log
So sexy it hurts 🐸

I’m too sexy for this bark
Too sexy for this bark
This moss knows my work

I’m too sexy for this stump
Too sexy for this stump
That beetle? Just jumped

I’m too sexy for this pose
Too sexy for repose
I refuse to move.

I’m too sexy for this dirt
Too sexy for this dirt
This soil feels worked

I’m too sexy for this log gap
Too sexy for this log gap
Nature's wooden trap

I’m too sexy for predators
Too sexy for the rain
Too sexy to move again

I’m too sexy for this world
Too sexy for this world
I'm just a toad, unfurled 🐸✨

[OC] I Cried

TL;DR- poem's at the bottom.

Backstory: driving through California's Central valley. Pistachio trees and corn fields on either side of the road. It's late, and the Sun is just about done for the day.

Then while driving past one of the corn fields, a white blur dashing in and out of the corn? That's the wrong color for anything around these parts. So we slowed down and saw a little dog.

There's nothing out here except farmland. This one is too sweet to last long out here alone. Come here girl. I was expecting her to be like the others and run away. She didn't.

She approached cautiously. After I'd given her a pat on the head, I realized for some reason she trusted me. So I asked her to walk to the car where my wife was waiting. And yes, at this point I did play in my life a bit because I knew the dog was ours if we chose, by the way she was behaving.

As I approached the car with the dog shortly behind me, I asked my wife "if I can catch her, can we keep her?" By that time, the dog had caught up to me, circled around behind me and stopped so she was staring at my wife, one ear in the air and one down, as if asking her the same question. My wife didn't have a choice, she said yes.

Then as if she'd always been mine, I told the dog to get in the car and she hopped into my wife's lap. We drove home and the rest is history, at least as told by the poem that follows...

I cried
when I saw you running through that field alone,
all skin and bones, no place to call your own,
Sweet little one, just a blur against the sky,
and something in me broke—I didn’t know why.

I cried
when I called, expecting you to run away,
but you came right up like you were meant to stay,
you trusted me without a reason why,
then climbed in the car like you were ready to try.

I cried
when I saw just how bad things had been,
every scrape and bite on your fragile skin,
I couldn’t fix your past, no matter how I tried,
but I promised right then you’d never be denied.

I cried
at the vet, waiting quiet while they scanned,
holding on tight, just hoping I’d understand,
if someone would claim you, or if you’d be free,
those were the hardest tears for me. 😭

I cried
when they said there was no chip, no name,
no one was coming, no one to claim,
and the tears came down like pouring rain—🥹
because now you were safe, and out of pain.

Bonnie Tyler,
you don’t have to run anymore,
you’re not lost like you were before,
and I don’t know what you’ve been through—
but I know this much:
I’m not letting go of you. 🤗

[OC] I'm Listening

You said meow.

I expected nonsense.
The usual human noise.
Big mouth. No whiskers. No talent.

But then—

You said it again.

And it wasn’t… terrible.

I gave you the look.
The one from the side.
The “I saw what you just did” look.

Because that sounded close.

Not fluent.
Not impressive.
But close enough to make my ears tilt forward.

You weren’t teasing.

You were trying.

Oh.

That changes things.

I have spent years perfecting this system—
one meow for food,
Another for outside,
Yet another for “why is my bowl only half full,
explain yourself.”

And now you’re studying it.

Careful little copies.
Testing the shape of my words.

You’re not laughing.
You’re listening.

I stare at you longer.

Is this how it starts?
First a meow.
Then a conversation?

You say it again.

Still clumsy.
Still human.

But warmer.

And I feel something strange—
not insult,
not offense—

recognition.

You’re not invading my language.

You’re trying to meet me in it.

My tail gives one slow flick.

All right.

Try again.

I’m listening.

The Answer of The Three

We came because a human stood
and thought we’d answer—One, Two, Three,
he tried to gather something wise…
we let him think it so would be.

He asked, “Why stare at empty walls?
There’s nothing there to see.”
We did not blink. One tail replied,
“There is. You lack the key.”

“Then why the midnight racing storms?
No prey, no urgency?”
“The night is full of moving things—
you miss them. We are free.”

“Why knock things down I set with care?
They sit just fine for me.”
“If it can fall, it should be known.
We test reality.”

He shifted then: “Why ignore me
when I call you constantly.”
“We hear you every single time.
We choose selectively.”

At last, more quiet: “Why, when I’m low…
do you come and sit with me?”
No clever words were offered then—
one rose… and closed the space between them gently.

No grand decree. No lesson carved.
No spoken clarity—
just quiet weight beside his side…

…the answer of the Three.

[OC] "Does that person feel like me?"

"Does that person feel like me?"

TL;DR - The poem's at the bottom.

A poem inspired by a little boy's question to his mother about what he saw in a grocery store parking lot. And the story follows...

The wife and I were shopping and when we were done, we were exiting the store and we noticed a man sitting on the curb, hands in his face, and shoulders which were moving in that rhythmic motion and it let us know that he was crying.

I try not to pry, but I also try not to let someone lay in the gutter. So I let my wife continue on to the car and I walked over. As I approached, I could tell he was a homeless gentleman. So I just sat down. I didn't say anything.

He turned, with one of the saddest expressions I've ever seen in my life, and simply said "They stole my dog".

Well you know me. That broke my heart. So I asked about the dog and he proceeded to tell me the warmest stories that you would expect to hear from a family man who is telling you about their family pet.

He started crying even more. And then it happened. A mother and a very young child came along. And the child did what children do, they asked about what they didn't understand.

But they didn't ask their mom, the little boy asked me. I'm all about honesty, so without thinking I simply said someone stole his dog.

The boy seemed satisfied with the answer and the mother and he continued on their way into the store.

I sat there for a short while with the man while he continued to talk about his dog, when the two appeared again. Well that was a bit too quick for any kind of shopping that they looked like they would have been doing. And they're heading back to us again?

When they got close enough, I noticed the boy was carrying a store bag. He looked up at his mother and she let go of his hand. He walked over as very young ones would, kind of slow and wobbly. And then he held out that bag as if it were an offering.

The man took the bag the boy offered and what he took out broke and mended my heart at the same time. It was a Lil Roy Plush stuffed DOG toy that was on clearance sale from the store we were sitting in front of.

And out of his mouth came words that brought tears to my eyes. "Now you can feel just like me".

The rest of the story, played out like you would expect. But it did inspire me to write a little something about what it must be like to walk the world next to this little boy.

Tiny shoes go tap tap slow, Mama says we have to go. People walking, big and small, I keep asking about them all.

“Does that person feel like me?” Daddy lifts me so I see. “That man yelled loud inside the store.” Maybe his heart is very sore.

“That lady sleeps out in the rain.” Maybe her body hurts with pain. Maybe her tummy cries all night. Maybe she lost her warm safe light.

“That boy keeps pulling at his hair.” Mama says, “Be soft. Be fair.” Maybe sounds are big and sharp. Maybe his days feel dark and hard.

“That grandma walks so very slow.” Maybe her bones ache down below. Maybe every step says “ow.” But she still buys the groceries now.

“That man smells funny. Why’s he shake?” Maybe something inside did break. Maybe sadness got too deep, And chased away his gentle sleep.

“That girl won’t look into my face.” Maybe the world’s a scary place. Maybe eyes are much too bright. Maybe crowds feel loud and tight.

“That daddy cried inside his car.” Mama says some hurts stay far Inside your chest where none can see, Even if you look happy.

“Does that person feel like me?” I ask it by each tree and street. Mama says, “In some small way, Every heart can hurt someday.”

So if somebody acts “not right,” Or growls, or cries, or wants to fight, Maybe first we try to see What pain they carry secretly.

And if I’m sad when I am big, Or life becomes too hard to dig, I hope somebody looks at me And wonders gently… “Do they feel like me?”

The Adventures of IZOD Man

(I'm literally trapped! So I write. Please forgive me for this one 😭)

TLDR; Kitty fell asleep on me. I'm trapped!

Behold brave Izod Man, some say, who once could freely walk away.

He roamed the house both near and far, the kitchen, couch, and even the car.

He made his plans. He ruled his fate. He chose his bedtime. Chose his plate.

Then one white cat climbed in his lap.

And that, dear friends,

was simply that.

For now he sits both still and mild, captured by his fluffy child.

His arm asleep. His leg gone numb. Yet dares not move a single thumb.

The cat extends one snowy paw to reinforce the ancient law:

"The lap is mine. The human stays. He may resume his life in days."

And there he sits without complaint, his freedom fading, growing faint.

While on his sock, in letters grand, appears the mark of Izod Man.

A warning to both young and old: No prison bars. No chains to hold.

No locked-up cell. No evil plan.

Just one white cat...

and Izod Man. 🐾

[OC] White Cat's Lullaby

White Cat's Lullaby

White cat sleeps in quiet light,
Blanket warm and moon just right.
Black cat watches, always near—
In his dreams or curled ear to ear.

Soft as stars and brave as flame,
Guardian shadow, without name.
Sleep, sweet snow, no need to roam—
Your angel’s here to guide you home.

Hello My Sweet Child

Hello, my sweet child,
Come closer to me.
Those beautiful eyes
Have so much to see.

You thought you were hiding—
Oh, goodness... not quite.
I've watched over you
Since your very first sight.

You've been oh so busy,
As young children do.
But now that you're with me,
I've wonders for you.

We'll tumble together,
We'll scamper and play.
I'll teach you the games
That can fill up a day.

But first comes our language.
Your meows are brand new.
They're soft little whispers...

They'll blossom in you.

Now borrow my eyes
For a moment or two.
The world may seem brighter
Than anything new.

You'll wonder why colors
Feel deeper somehow.
Why things you've walked past
Will be calling you now.

You'll notice the smallest
Of movements nearby.
The dance of the stillness.
The hush passing by.

At first it feels heavy,
Like too much to bear.
A million small wonders
All waiting out there.

But slowly you'll find,
As your heart understands,
The world has been waiting
Inside gentle hands.

Then one day you'll ask me,
"Why does time seem to fly?
Why does morning become
A soft evening sky?"

I'll smile as I nuzzle
The top of your head.

"Because when you notice
How beautiful life is...

You stop counting the moments...

And simply
live them instead."

Then you'll see
Like me.

And you'll understand..

[OC] Who Painted This Cat Black?

Who painted this cat black?
I need to know the hack.
He looks like midnight grew some legs
And learned to steal my snacks.

Who painted that one white?
He's powdered sugar & bright.
He watches every dumb decision
Like he's getting paid tonight.

One says, "Parkour!" off the bookshelf.
One says, "Don't involve me."
One commits twelve little felonies.
One provides the commentary.

One is soot and bad ideas.
One is clouds and class.
Together they're a balanced meal
Of elegance and ass.
(Am I allowed to say that, do I get a pass?)

Who painted this cat black?
Who painted that one white?
Who looked at yin and yang and thought,

"Let's make 'em both a little shite."

[OC] Don't Wake Me Up... I'm Trying to Be Good!

Don't Wake Me Up... I'm Trying to Be Good

This is the longest I've behaved
since kittenhood.

I shut my eyes
as tight as glue.
One little giggle...

I'll be coming for you.

'Cause I had three bad notions
ready to leap.
Thankfully...

They all fell asleep.

Don't pet my belly.
Don't boop my nose.
That's how the trouble
just starts to grow.

One bad idea
still wants the blinds.
Another idea keeps
changing its mind.

The third one's smiling.

That should concern.

He's usually first
to take his turn.

You think this nap
is just for me?

No...

It's for the lamp,
the drapes, and
the indoor tree.

The sofa called
to thank me in my dreams.
The curtains formed
their own safety team.

The coffee mug
stopped shaking too.
The bookshelf said,
"We're gonna pull through!"

The vacuum smiled.
The broom stood tall.
Nobody's panicked...

Not at all.

The house has never
been this neat.

Even the dust
feels complete.

So let me snore.
Don't make a sound.
Good decisions
can still be found.

But wake me now...

And here's the scoop...

I'll have six bad ideas
before you boop.

So let me sleep.
Don't interfere.

I'm doing excellent work...

From right...

over here.

[OC] Why Do You?

Why do you cover me
Before I fall asleep?

Because some little promises
Are mine to keep.

Why do you smile at me
When I stare?

Because I never feel alone
The moment you're there.

Why do you call me "best boy"
Every single day?

Because some simple truths
Should never fade away.

Why do your fingers
Find the top of my head?

Because they learned
Their favorite place
The very first day we met.

Why do you stop
To watch me close my eyes?

Because peace has whiskers,
A pink little nose,
And the smallest disguise.

Why do I matter
When I've done nothing grand?

Because love has never measured
The size of your hand.

It measures quiet moments...
The ones no one else can see.

Like the way you always save
The best of you...

For me.
