There are teenagers on the fediverse.
This is actually a good thing - teenagers are known to bring niche things into popular culture! For some reason the whole of society kind of cares what they think is cool

lemm.ee is growing. Welcome, new members!
Just joined a few days ago, actually loving it so far. Of course we lack a few of my fav subs here but I know it'll grow.

Summit for Lemmy is now open source
Gonna download now and give it a try. Currently using Boost but trying a few different options to see what works best. A lot of people suggested Voyager but I didn't like it very much.

It's one of those things where evil people actually don't win - it just looks like it on the short term!

Self-Hosted podcast
Reply in thread
Tbf if you want a big following for ads and such you need to use whatever has the people on it.
Lemmy is great for personal hobbies and enjoyment, but not running/advertising a business (which I assume the podcast is).
And it should probably stay that way? Not sure.
But I'm of the opinion that stuff like Instagram/Fb/X will always be around, but I'll stick with things like Lemmy for personal stuff.

I got sent a screenshot from a local Facebook group where someone was thanking "whoever" cleared the fallen tree from the trail around the lake near me.
You dropped this 👑

Have Americans always been this stupid?
Reply in thread
Wow you putting it like that:
TL;DR: Americans are stupid because they are shameless
That's literally it. You are so right.
I cannot count the amount of times that "annoying uncle/dad" is spewing racist/sexist/uneducated bullshit and everyone in the family feels like they just have to let them say it.
We really need to normalize pointing out stupid pov's with harmful consequences.
This also reminds me of the common experience in the US of some random white dude with a megaphone screaming "Jesus saves blablabla" in public places. Why the fuck do we deal with that shit?

Good to exercise at home instead of gym?
First off - I'm excited for you!! Your future self will be so fucking grateful.
I absolutely think at home workouts are a fantastic starting point.
I get the gym can be intimidating and if that stops you from working out then do something else.
But major note is: what's your goal?
If you are trying to lose weight, your biggest goal should just be more activity + calorie deficit. You can only do strength so often and while it will help you lose weight, it's way better to do strength + walking (or other easy cardio).
I recently lost about 15 pounds in the last 6 ish months and I did it by getting around 10,000 steps per day and 1-2 strength training days per week, and being on a calorie deficit.
If your goal is to gain muscle, then you can absolutely do that with minimal weights or just bodyweight at the beginning.
Personally this got a little boring (if just a lot of reps and for me doesn't feel as fun as some of the gym equipment I use now).
But above all: DON'T underestimate the dieting portion. Whether your goal is to gain muscle or lose weight, what you eat is half if not more of the equation.
Happy to share more details but didn't want to type a book without knowing what you need :)
Good luck!!

I feel that the best thing about federated social like Lemmy is just that there's no reason to engagement farm. Like I could get big on Lemmy but unless I'm able to direct that traffic somewhere else effectively, who cares?

Is there a FOSS Linkedin alternative?
Technically you can use anything for job networking, it's not necessary for it to be"designed" for networking.
A Lemmy instance about your industry/niche could be a good place to meet people in your industry, and even hire ppl or search for ppl hiring.

Do you use your turn signal in a turn-only lane? Why or why not?
Basically always. Unless my signal automatically turned off as I merged into the left lane and then I turned left immediately before I even had time to turn it back on

Is anyone developing anti-generative AI proof?
Reply in thread
If you trust the source, you can trust the image/video/document/whatever.
I think this is key. There have always been sources that have been incredibly trustworthy that people choose to ignore. Like AP News or Reuters for example. Sometimes they might make mistakes but as long as they keep fixing them in a timely manner that's what's important.
Yeah it's still possible they could post an AI image - but that's why you compare sources.
Besides that would ruin the credibility they've spent decades building.

Dropout Price Change Announcement
These people do great work and it's totally worth $7 a month. :)
Also this is only for new members, so they aren't even suddenly getting a ton of money for this like if they just randomly hiked the price on all of us.
