I can kind of relate. There are a lot of parts of coding I find a little boring.

• Once the interesting problem is solved and all you need to do is follow through
• Large scale refactorings in ways too complicated for an IDE.
• Fixing annoying dependency / migration issues

When you use an expensive AI agent, like Claude, it can nowadays handle these tasks competently, to the point where I only need to correct small things here and there.

When you give these tasks to an AI agent, it feels a bit like delegating to a junior, but without the guilt of giving someone a menial or boring task. That allows me to work on stuff I find more interesting. To me, THAT'S why it's adictive.

However, this isn't without cost. First, there's the societal costs: Environmental, centralization of power, contribution to hardware shortages and a bubble

Second, there are more personal costs. You'll come to rely more and more on these tools, and your skills will rust. You may end up avoiding learning things about a codebase because you delegate it away.

It's a tempting tool. One which in my experience can genuinely help, but is easy to misuse.

The Financial Times was particularly quick to come after Foran. It quoted her June post reading:

Yeah, this is why I voted for her opponent. I don't like the US, but the little I do know about Iran's regime is pretty terrible too.

That post was her pinned one, and it reads a little tankie / extreme left. I don't follow her, so I don't know if that's an accurate representation of her politics. On the face of it, it made me feel a little uncomfortable.

In the end it was a narrow win. 6 more votes than her opponent.

TLDR; It fucks up accessibility for blind people (amongst others).

Its also pretty futile imo. AI is reading billions of words from books and posts. A handful of users obfuscating their posts is not going to do anything.

If it's needed for survival, it should be free. No exceptions.

I realize that some people really dislike AI, but this is an area where I'm willing to absolutely put my foot down as the top-level maintainer. Linux is not one of those anti-AI projects, and if somebody has issues with that, they can do the open-source thing and fork it. Or just walk away. AI is a tool, just like other tools we use. And it's clearly a useful one.

I think broadly speaking what he says is reasonable. If you don't want to use AI, then don't, but I think it can be used somewhat responsibly.

I have all sorts of issues with AI tooling:

• the centralization of power
• the load it adds on maintainers because of the amount of slop bad developers (and non-devs) produce with it
• the environmental impacts of using larger models
• the data centers causing health risks
• the impact on the PC industry
• the degeneration of skills and knowledge.

That said, it's a tool, and can be used to amplify good work too.

Sometimes the conspiracy theorists pop out of their echo chamber and make a statement that seems reasonable and widely accepted to them but can only be believed if you first believe 17 layers of propaganda, leaps of logic and generally brainrot. Usually all fed to them by bigots and billionaires.

They are then surprised by normal people clowning on them and instead of reflecting, they just tell themselves they know something the normies don't and that makes them special.

Social housing typically doesn't look as good as high-end apartments, but it doesn't have to look terrible. Here's some pretty neat looking social housing in south Paris.

It's kind of the China Town of Paris.

It's right next to an accessible tram station, has green spaces and social areas spread around, a couple of malls with great independent restaurants right next door. There are cycle lanes all around the place.
