Seattle’s World Cup will play out in Brian Schmetzer’s soccer city

Brian Schmetzer watched the soccer ball ping across Lumen Field.

From Federal Way’s Hassani Dotson to Seattle’s Jackson Ragen. To Seattle University’s Alex Roldan and Kirkland’s Snyder Brunell. To Mercer Island’s Jordan Morris, who lashed in a goal.

The scoring sequence put together by a bunch of Seattle Sounders players with local roots sent Sounders fans into raptures. Then the TV cameras panned to Schmetzer, who simply nodded. As if to say, ahead of the World Cup coming here: “Yep, this is how we do it in Seattle.”

2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup: How Lumen Field will transition to grass

The process for installing grass inside Lumen Field before the 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup has started. Doing so has meant burying the FieldTurf surface used by the Seahawks, Sounders and Reign — literally.

Work started the final week of February on installing the foundation for what will eventually be a grass surface used for six World Cup matches scheduled to take place at Lumen Field between mid June and early July, beginning with the June 15 match between Belgium and Egypt.

But rather than removing the FieldTurf, FIFA is opting to build the grass surface on top of the current artificial field.
