Day 703 of posting a Daily Screenshot from the games I've been playing

cross-posted from: https://lemmy.world/post/48398820

Today's game is Silent Hill f again. I spent all day yesterday talking about why i'm playing this, so instead today i'lll talk about the game itself. Primarily my first point that springs to mind while playing this: I love the game, probably one of my favorite from that year, but it feels very "un-Silent Hill". I know i'm not the most credible to give that opinion as i've only played Silent Hill 2 and half of the First one, but i think it's the setting. It feels like they just drop the fog in and call it a Silent Hill game. I just want to reclarify though, this is not a knock against the game, i still majorly respect it.

The enemies do a good job though of just freaking me out, all the fleshy pulsating holes and stuff are unsettling, and these Scare Crows have me always on edge. I feel like the moment i turn around i'm gonna get jumped by one of them. Scary as fuck, remind me of the Mannequins from silent hill 2 except these ones love to play the long game.

I pushed on today and made it to the part where you go into the two wings of the building to unlock the door. I also collected some achievements. I'm using that as a benchmark to measure 100% for me, which is my goal. As i don't want to go out of my way to collect every little document. Suffice to say i have 13 achievements left and i should knock out all but the story ones in this playthrough as long as i play my cards right.

I just played Shattered Memories

It was better then I expected. I have issues with it of course. I feel this would have been a better game if it wasn't a reimagining of SH1. The story Is really good, it probably could have been told better no doubt. It has a twist ending that I feel stupid for not figuring out before the reveal. I was satisfied with the ending.

For context, I played the PS2 version. The game has "puzzles" that are clearly designed with the Wii's shitass motion controls in mind. These "puzzles" were slightly reworked for the standard PS2 controls and It feels slightly out of place.

I'd still probably rank this game as the second worst of the main entry SH games. I'd consider it a spinoff but people seem to disagree from what I've seen. Downpour was just utter trash and I struggle to find anything redeemable about it. Shattered Memories was actually an enjoyable experience with a great story that had to be a reimagining of SH1 but didn't want to be, if that makes sense.

This game started development as Silent Hill: Cold Heart. The game would have been mostly the same (probably, possibly?) but it would have a different protagonist. Konami in their infinite wisdom wouldn't green light the fucking thing after the failure of Homecoming so Climax re-pitched it as a remake of 1 which Konami had already green lit.

It's a shame this game's story is held down by being a bad remake of SH1. It's actually really good if you can ignore it's connection to the series and just play it. I'm not saying it's the best game ever but it's a good game, and deserves better in my opinion.

What did everyone think of Silent Hill f?

I have mixed feelings. The story I think was excellent. Possibly one of the best SH stories. This didn't always translate to amazing gameplay however. The combat for the most part kind of sucked imo. The story really was the best part for me. I thought the puzzles were pretty good.

The worst part of the game for me is

::: spoiler Tap for spoiler all the forced combat towards the end of the game. It's not difficult, it's just annoying. I'm hesitant to play it again anytime soon mostly because of that. :::

Performance wise, no complaints. I ran the game with an RX 9070 XT and was averaging above 100fps. Of course, older cards may struggle but from what I've seen the game is pretty well optimized.

I'm more curious about what other fans thought about the game, I realize the game is pretty divisive. I've seen it called the new SH4.

So, those of you who played it, what did you think? I'd probably rate it 6.5/10.
