Resistance and Strengthening Our Community

Many people feel isolated, overwhelmed, or terrorized by the current political and corporate climate in the US and around the world as we face fascism and wealth inequality as a constant and ever growing threat to our freedom.

I made a website to act as a directory to all of the services I host and have available for our local community. I believe we need to connect, get to know our neighbors and share our skills to improve our self-reliance and break away from dependency on fragile, corrupt or co opted systems.

MakeArmy is all about building and maintaining free, open and safe spaces where people can ask questions, share notes, publish guides, and coordinate projects. I'm genuinely hoping to connect with you all and start a conversation.

I've built this operating on the following principles:

  • Local: Start where you live; and build something your community can use.
  • Open: We exist to share our knowledge and skills with others to better all lives.
  • Private: We ONLY employ tools and services that are open source and privacy respecting.
  • Decentralized: We ONLY deploy on platforms that are decentralized to fight censorship.

You can read more on my website at https://makearmy.io/ and I invite you to join me on the Matrix server to discuss how we can best use these tools to better our community and improve outreach to connect with like-minded individuals as we head into the future together.

Current Events, Connecting & Mesh Networking

Hey everyone,

I don't know about you but I have been watching the news every day and it's hard not to think about how what's happening in MN could easily be Buffalo or Rochester. I feel motivated to do something productive and within my skill set so I wanted to reach out to everyone here to let you know who I am and what I can offer.

I've recently picked up mesh communications. I'm investing pretty heavily in it and will have nodes in Brighton, East Rochester and Fairport. Bunch of RAK and T-Beams coming in and plan to run meshtastic and meshcore at each location. If you know more than me I'd be happy to learn from you and take advice, if you're curious and don't know how to get started I'm happy to share what I've learned so far.

There is the current ROCMesh Discord: https://discord.gg/wQQ4XQjQtp

I'm also pursuing my own spaces for this topic under the name 585915

I don't love Discord so I've also set up a Matrix room on my Conduit based server: https://matrix.to/#/#585915:matrix.makearmy.io

Finally I've set up a lemmy community for this specific topic which can be found here: https://lemmy.makearmy.io/c/585915

I've set up an array of fediverse and self hosted tools to help us work together to create things together as a community under the name MakeArmy. You're also welcome to use or contribute to them as you'd like:

Lemmy: https://lemmy.makearmy.io/ Mastodon: https://mastodon.makearmy.io/explore Pixelfed: https://pixels.makearmy.io/ Misskey: https://deck.makearmy.io/ Peertube: https://watch.makearmy.io/ Forgejo: https://forge.makearmy.io/ IRC: https://irc.makearmy.io/ Privatebin: https://paste.makearmy.io/

I have a sizable underground workshop in East Rochester with 3D printers, lasers, basic carpentry tools, lab electronics and more. If you require those facilities we could talk. I am looking forward to meeting some like-minded people in my community to work on these and other projects together.

I'm new to all of this and I'm figuring it out as I go. I'm open to feedback and contributions as I said earlier but I'm trying to do something within my range to better the community. If you plan to use any of the above let me know so I can keep an eye out for you - managing all of these is a lot and it can be hard to keep track of as people come and go but it's how I feel I can try to make a difference.

considering a move to rochester

I need a change. I think moving to a blue state might be healthy for me. I was looking at Oregon where a few of my friends live but coming from Ohio that would be a pretty difficult move. You guys are basically right next door.

How are things in Rochester? What's the LGBT+ community like there? How's the jobs market? What's housing like? I would need to find something cheap with off street parking so I could charge my EV. I see you guys have really good internet avaliable in many places too, especially compared to the crappy spectrum connection I'm stuck with here. Prices are higher than there, but not by that much.
