Hello, I have a bunch of personal data - videos, pictures, documents, PDFs etc. that I want to backup.

I am wondering what is the best way to do this?

Requirements -

• I want to backup multiple different folders from my Linux computer - it is not a full disk backup.
• Encryption would be great to have.
• This needs to be a long term backup - like few years or more.
• Data - small videos, pictures, PDFs, text files, documents, etc. Total size - less than 50-60 GB (for now - but it can increase over time).
• I want to be able to incrementally add more data to backup of respective folders (e.g. new photos, documents etc.), or even add new folders.
• After backup, I want to be able to cleanup my hard disk, reinstall OS or restore data from backup onto a completely new system in a new directory.
• I do not care about stuff like file metadata like owner user, permissions etc.

Questions -

1. Is one or more flash drives good for such kind of backup? Or would it get corrupt within few years?
2. I found Borg backup, but it suggests that backup should be restored on the same machine - which does not seem to fit my use case.

• It also suggests to keep Borg config directory - which again conflicts with restoring or adding new items from a different system.
• Not sure how well this would work if restoring on a new system?
• Are there any better alternatives?

1. If I do use Borg, should using one repository per folder be the way to go about it? Or is there a better way?
2. In Borg itself, I am thinking of using the repokey method (key stored with the repository) - and store the passphrase in a KeePass database on a different flash drive. Any different suggestions?

Please feel free to suggest any alternatives or improvements to my plan?

I found Under My Skin (2020) which apparently has some nonbinary rep, so I'm gonna check that out. But looking for more.

Zero interest in stuff like Dr Who, fringe or Star Trek for entertainment. Looking for something more like Sense8, or Perfect Blue, if possible. Though, I think it's fine to drop some not so matching stuff too, for other people browsing to check out.

I'd like to have a small, simple audio recorder, for noting ideas when i'm driving or at work and i can't write them down on paper. My cellphone does this but i can't easily navigate to its recorder with the touchscreen while driving. Something that just has a record button i can find by touch would be great. Even better if it's easy to clean, so i could use it at work where i'm a line cook. I don't need a million features, i just need to be able to record and play back short sections of audio, and maybe copy them to my computer over a wire.

Is there anything like this that's not super expensive?

I live in Canada, so I'm sure there are plenty of nice ones available in Japan or Europe etc but I fear where I live I can't trust if something is an actual good brand or just paid shills advertising things on Instagram or mass paid 4-5 star ratings on Amazon.

Any recommendations for good Bidets? It will be my first, so I don't know exactly what I'm looking for, but I don't need it to be a rocket ship with a different program from every day of the week or some shit.

I am not afraid to spend money on it and don't necessarily want to go for the cheapest option but I also don't plan on spending $1000 on a toilet seat either.

I have access to power nearby and have the capability of modifying plumbing if need be for hot water.

My sister needs a streaming device but they all seem to be awful. The only one that seems somewhat decent is the Apple TV but that's too expensive. So I’ve had this thing for half a decade at this point. It was the first PC I ever got and I’ve been dealing with it being a PC which was cheap and not made for gaming. I’d like to see if there’s any recommendations I can add or upgrade to make it better rather than buying a entirely new PC

My laptop is too new to have a disc drive and the external one i have refuses to work half the time for DVD and doesn't support bluray at all. My "smart" TV is either too smart or too dumb to play a good portion of the movies i have digitally on a hard drive. Is there a device that can just do both and plug into the TV over HDMI?

About a year and a half ago I asked for laptop suggestions. I was given a lot of good options and I knew what I wanted a ThinkPad. Being a broke college student over a 1000 thousand price tag made me look else where. I ended up with an idea pad. I cannot say enough how much I hate this product. I got up one morning and discovered it would not come on. I take it to be repaired and the motherboard is cracked. It’s un fixable and I’m down 500$. I have an old Chromebook running Linux mint so I’ve got something but it still sucks loosing that. I should’ve known better than to trust Lenovo I saw reviews of that model saying it was junk.

I have never owned a projector and I'm not an audio- or cinephile. I often have neighbors over at the fire pit, and showing a movie would be fun sometimes.

Recommend a luggable projector setup? I don't mind it being cabled to power or input - I'm not going far from the house. I was thinking I might build a little cart to store and deploy it easily. I see battery powered and lightweight units which are great I'm sure, but I don't need to pay extra for those features.

I'm also looking for info on projector screens. Sadly, there's no suitable place to mount one so it'll need to be on a stand or something too.

I work from home with my SO and for the same company. We work side by side, I'd say we're like 2-3 meters apart.

We're often in the same video-calls together and unfortunately my microphone picks up her voice quite a bit (and vice-versa, of course). I've tried reducing the microphone volume, noise suppression, noise canceling but nothing seems to really work. It's very annoying because she hears herself when she's talking and has to ask me to mute myself. Then, I forget I'm muted and talk for a while before I notice it. it's very distracting.

I'm currently using a BoomPro X Microphone which doesn't solve my problem.

I've thought about those desk microphones like the Blue Yeti or something, but I'm quite ignorant about the matter and I'm afraid it will pick up a lot of keyboard noise or not solve the problem at all. I just don't want those gamer/streamer arms where mic has to be super close to my mouth, I want something that I can use at work!

I'd say my budget is around 100 euros, flexible. Thanks a bunch!

For quick context: I still use a digital music player (Sony Walkman NW-A45) frequently. I am not super fond of this player for reasons.

I have looked around for a while now, and I personally cannot find any suitable solutions (both new or old). I am curious if there exists anything that I might have missed, I would love to know about it.

Hey, I am in the market for a new tablet. I'm still using a SM-T800. I love how rugged it's felt, the screen quality and resolution, and the overall size of the device.

I would mostly use it for notes and assisting me in tabletop games. Reading, such as manga/comics would also be a main use too. Only occasionally web browsing, and more rarely watching video content.

I don't really care about specific brands or anything other than I would like to stay away from Apple, and for it to have support for a decent keyboard case/stand.

I would also need it to support Bluetooth. I have no demand for a headphone jack or SD card slot, but those would be welcome additions as well.

I just spoke with a friend of mine on the phone. He’s got various tech support issues including worrying that his phone might have some malware on it.

I have the skills to help him, but I don’t have the time. Therefore I’m looking for more options.

My question is: are there services that specialize in tech support for elderly people? Maybe coming over to do tasks for them, or a place that he can go with devices?

I recommended he go to the T-Mobile store for questions about his phone’s security, but I know it can be hit or miss with the expertise of retail employees.

Does anyone know of an IT service that specializes in helping elderly/tech-non-savvy individuals?

I've been looking for communities here on art theory, art history and movements, contemporary artists and exhibitions, but to no avail. Don't people go to galleries and art museums, or have their own, conceptual or more hands-on art practice?

Or is it just that the threadiverse has inherited so many Reddit neckbeards that it's basically hostile to any form of aesthetic intellectualism?

To preempt suggestions of "just start your own" — yeah, but I'm looking for a community more than just me going on about my preferences.

So I'm hoping somebody can tell me I just suck at searching and there are several communities just like I've been looking for. Second best result would be a handful of other art snobs going "YES! I'D LOVE THAT TOO," so we can at least co-mod a new community together.
