Best of 2025?

Okay, let's get a conversation started, since I need more music. Note that I'm team tappy and sparkles, so I'm curious what y'all found fantastic this year. Just because I'm not into slint or car bomb doesn't mean I can't be into something like it.

Here's my top albums:

  • Totorro - Sofa So Good. Several earworms and the whole album is great.
  • Carian - Saranhedra. Maybe a bit too much Cloudkicker, But holy crap I need more of this.
  • Armature - s/t (Seattle) (a lot of heart in here)
  • Comprehending - The Perils and Rewards of an Unknown Path. Just a nice pleasant album. The brass in Constant reminds me of, well, you know.
  • Parachute Day - Seasonal Expression. Just fun, upbeat & enjoyable. reminds me a bit of Chronologist.

Top EPs:

  • This is the Second EP of a band called Adebisi Shank. Four fantastic tracks, hopefully the shows and adoration encourage some more. Runnerups aplenty:
  • Let it Eat You for Fun (math/post gloriousness),
  • renaive (I swear I hear some Zefs Chasing Cara in there),
  • Homi/Homi (some super tight playing),
  • Catholics (Prinze Jr split, which seriously may be better than their last album)

The "More of that track, please", award, 2025:

  • Hiroe, "Collider". Fantastic use of tapping throughout, and the whole album is a great post-rock album.
  • Runnerup for the same reasons: Kusanagi, "Polymorph"

The "Favorite album I just found this year regardless of genre" award:

  • Meer - Wheels within Wheels. The 2024 awards were right, that's the kind of upbeat, epic, music I need in my life. Both singers add to it, they've got two string players. Is it prog? Probably?

The "Not math-rock but" award:

  • Psychonaut - World Maker.
  • Runner up: Grapefruit Astronauts

So, how about you?
