Madthumbs seems to think this time that abandoning Windows Gaming wouldn't have a lot of unintended consequence, that would disadvantage Microsoft more than Linux lol.

1. Xbox sales were down 70%... So, why would developers limit themselves exactly?
2. How do you think Customers and devs would react to more platform lock-in? Devs WANT to sell more games
3. Developers would likely dump DirectX entirely, and just use cross platform libraries (they already are). Devs aren't going to limit themselves to Xbox only. And, toolkits like Unity abstract a lot of the lower level graphics from the developer. So, it doesn't even matter
4. If it will kill gaming in Linux, it would kill it more in windows, and Microsoft would piss off customers. I'm not sure how this would be a brag...
5. The biggest online marketplace is Steam... No sane dev is going to limit themselves at this point to only 1 platform
6. The DirectX features Madthumbs mentions DOES NOT MATTER. There are 50 different ways to solve the same problem, using non-vulkan libraries (or even Vulkan Extensions). DirectX is simply 1 solution.
7. "Antitrust".. Again.. And, I guarantee that the EU would be unimpressed...
8. Theoretical scenarios like this, are exactly why gamers should consider different platforms..

This nonsense is based on the idea that DirectX (which is Windows/Xbox only) is critical to game developers. It is not. There is NOTHING gaming requires from DirectX specifically, or Microsoft.

It also shows a complete lack of delusion about how users or developers ACTUALLY think.

Context

The whole list of "top 10 best Linux apps" is already nonsensical. But just wait until I go one-by-one.

• Vim - Honestly, a bit heaver-weight than I'd like. The customizations I do are quite minimal and mostly involve turning features (like autoindent and syntax highlighting for instance) off.
• Nechet - Never heard of it. Does it actually exist or is the name "Nechet" an hallucination? I can't find anything about "Nechet" on DuckDuckGo. And the description in the image under "Nechet" mentions "nmap"...? Searching "nechet nmap" yields no useful information. I think "Nechet" is the Madthumbs equivalent of "covfefe".
• Htop - Yeah, pretty good and useful app I use on a fairly regular basis. Not as often as I used to have to use Task Manager 20 years ago when I primarily used Windows.
• Ranger - Never heard of it until now, but at least this one exists. I really don't think it belongs on a "top 10" list. I've heard of Midnight Commander, but I've never felt the need to use it.
• Curl/Wget - That's two apps, both of which are incredibly useful. In my day job, I maintain an extensive RESTful API, and I prefer Curl over Postman. When downloading attachments from the web, all else being equal, I prefer Wget over my browser.
• NCMPCPP - Again, never heard of it until now, but it does exist. Sounds pretty cool. Maybe some day I'll have a reason to use it.
• BAT - Never heard of it. Looks like a CLI syntax highlighter. Not that the description in the slop image would tell you. WTF does "The only thing pretty pretty in pretty in my CLI" mean?
• BTOP - Never heard of it, but it looks like it's kindof "yet another TOP/HTOP clone". Why have both this and HTOP in the same list? It's just slop. That's why.
• TMUX - Yup. I've used it, but it's a little too heavy for my taste. I prefer dtach for CLI detaching/reattaching functionality. It's been a long time since I've used a terminal multiplexer, but I liked DVTM the last time I used such. Dtach and DVTM can also be combined to get mostly everything TMUX (or screen) supports.
• SSH - Likely the one app in the list that actually most belongs on a "top 10" list.

Clearly Madthumbs didn't give a fuck about the content of his posts. He's apparently the sort of person who copy/pastes shit out of an LLM and takes credit.

Imaginary first world problems.. Again.

It takes a lot of delusions/lack of experience to imagine Linux is completely fragmented and uses completely different programs, daemons and configuration

1. Linux has used the same base commands (grep, cat, tail, etc) for decades. Longer than powershell (and longer than MacOS)
2. What "tutorial"? Bash learning one? What exactly are you "learning" in CLI? Unix scripting was part of my University course, and NOTHING has changed since doing it 20 years ago
3. All the major distros are using SystemD now, the freedesktop base,Pulseaudio (or pipewire) and the only distinction is generally package managers. But, even a lot of software is available on flatpak.
4. The real difference is configuration tools. The majority are the same. And, if you're doing learning server administration and struggle to differentiate a tutorial between SUSE Server and Ubuntu server, then you SHOULDN'T be administrating servers
5. Most Daemons are the same too (everyone uses Samba, etc)
6. There are literally GUI tools for mostly everything.
7. Any common distribution has EXCELLENT documentation regarding almost anything.
8. The claim that 1% of that help is malicious is laughable.

As per always, this post is lacking actual examples, of where people use CLI these days. Probably thats because in practice, there are very few that affect newbies that actually exist.

This is yet another blatant case where Apple once again tries to screw developers. After mostly locking them into their own APIs and anti competitive OS.

In Linux, this wouldn't be possible at all. You don't even need to use specific hardware for development

Take a look at that post first. The rest of this won't make any sense unless you do.

What on earth does that have to do with Linux? Maybe Madthums is anti-Android because the Android kernel is a fork of Linux? It's not entirely clear from his post history what his opinion is on Android. But just for one quote, he did say:

An Android is technically using the Linux kernel, but no one out of his or her mind would call an Android a Linux.

He's made his disdain for F-Droid clear many times in the past, but I'm not quire sure how Madthumbs' original post is really relevant to F-Droid either. F-Droid's official repository doesn't include FUTO Keyboard (because FUTO Keyboard's license is not FOSS and F-Droid only carries FOSS in its official repository.)

FUTO Keyboard can be installed via F-Droid but only because FUTO provides an F-Droid repository that must be manually added to F-Droid. Blaming F-Droid for FUTO Keyboard's failings is like blaming your ISP because you don't like the pizza topping preferences expressed in a post you found on Facebook.

Mind you, FUTO's fucking evil and deserves a huge amount of condemnation. But I honestly think Madthumbs must be confused about something to be making that particular post in his anti-Linux community.

Apple plans to remove most of Rosetta 2 early next year.

As a result, every App (except a few unmaintained games) which hasn't been recompiled for Apple Silicon will break.

Rosetta 2 is an Apple Intel to Apple Silicon (Arm) wrapper used during their Apple silicon transition.

Rosetta 1 was removed in 2011, breaking all PPC (non-universal) apps on Intel Apple Machines.

Whilst some in the community love to boast about "ABI compatibility", they sure don't seem to have any problem with every app breaking on new Apple hardware, or being forced to buy a new computer to use newer versions which may not include the old architecture compiled in...

It's likely only a matter of time until those games break too

That's the problem with an OS being exclusively in control by a single developer. The developer can hike licencing, and even add subscription costs in the future.

MacOS has the same issue (but even worse, they fully control the hardware too, so can take measures to even do things like make migration more difficult).

Linux is controlled by many vendors. If one hikes prices, you can switch to another and continue using your software

Not really my thing, but GeForce Now has an official stable client available via flatpak for Linux now.

This also means that games that were previously claimed don't run on Linux may be available now, and is yet another reason to use steam os instead of things like Armory and windows

In yet another demonstration that Madthumbs isn't a developer just repeating AI nonsense, they incorrectly state that API compatibility is 100% maintained everywhere except linux.

Maintaining 100% API compatibility isn't a good thing, and nobody (even Windows/MacOS), despite their claim maintains perfect compatibility.

The reason is:

1. Some API's have security issues and NEED to change
2. Some may even try to do too much, or have issues with race conditions.
3. Every OS has undocumented bugs in their API's. Projects like Wine found many Win32 API bugs they need to replicate and implement. If a bug is found, the question becomes: do you modify the API to mention the bug, or do you fix the bug... Or, do you deprecate the API because its ambiguous? Microsoft allegedly uses Quirks hardcoded for certain apps to handle this..
4. I'm not sure its a good thing to be "proud", that an API isn't evolving and improving.
5. The easiest way to maintain compatibility, is to simply not do any improvements.
6. API's don't break overnight. There is warning.. If a app hasn't received updates in 2-3 years, it shouldn't be used in an enterprise settings AT ALL

In regards to "ABI compatibility"

1. Apple charged CPU architecture 2x in the past 20 years. Some people who bought the Mac Pro literally only have 3 years of App support, and now their machine is junk. Rosetta 2 is going to be pulled completely soon, so NO Intel apps will work
2. Apple also switched to 64bit apps only on IOS at one point, and pulled every app from the market that wasn't compiled that way
3. Its such a serious issue, that the NVIDIA DGX Spark uses linux
4. So does the Steam Machine
5. So does Meta Quest
6. So do most servers
7. So do many TV's
8. So do most Mobile phones
9. So do most routers
10. In the kernel, a lot has moved to userspace (even DevFS moved to udev). Which basically means it doesn't matter

In case there was any doubt that Madthumbs has no idea wtf they're talking about, I'd say its confirmed..

Apple was literally on the verge of bankruptcy, until they decided to use the free / open source BSD kernel for MacOSX and switched to a free software base.

Windows NT also utilised a lot of BSD code / open source for their network stack too.

The reality is, the biggest OS systems rely on a lot of Open source code.

If BSD was less permissive, it's likely that MacOS wouldn't still be around, and that Windows NT networking would have been struggling a lot longer

Just remember guys. Windows having 2x control panels is NOT bloat. Either is having Notepad and Wordpad. Either is their new OneDrive app you can't remove, or the apps you remove but reinstall automatically

And on MacOS, never mind all the Apple crapware they install that gives them 5 different ways to profit from you. Yes, you will keep getting prompted to use an apple id, and you will like it. If your support client wants to install a remote desktop app, have fun stepping them through the multiple accessibility and other options needed to even be able to access their system. So convenient and productive..

Even more so when you don't want to use their app store. You sometimes need to drag things around, you sometimes need to click an install, sometimes its a zip, etc. So much more convenient than Flatpak..

But, having different Linux distro's? That is APPARENTLY "bloat". Because, somehow, if someone installs Linux Mint on their own computer, my fedora installation is affected

Toolchains? GCC and LLVM exist because proprietary Unix and proprietary compiler research came first.

The first compilers were made in the 1940s, well before software covered by copyright in the U.S (which started in 1980). Even well before people started thinking to lock down source code under NDAs. Non-proprietary was the norm for software for several decades, just like non-proprietary is the norm for recipes and fashion designs today. (Terms like "Free Software" didn't exist until later just because they were a response to the rise of proprietary software.) And much development was done under those conditions.

Funny he should mention OpenGL given that it's FOSS, as is its successor Vulkan. Speaking of which, a snippet from the Wikipedia page for Vulkan:

FOSS is terrible at inventing entire industries from scratch.

Just as an example, the home 3d printing ecosystem started in the FOSS space and is still dominated by FOSS projects. And the development of home 3d printing was prevented for a good while by patents -- proprietary development hindered and continues to hinder that particular industry. Asshole proprietary companies and industry practices have tried to make inroads into that particular sphere, but the two mix like oil and water. It kindof feels like maybe the reason why FOSS has ruled in 3d printing is because proprietary innovation models are antithetical to the existence of such an industry.

Meanwhile, the sort of industries that live solidly in more proprietary areas can't really be engaged in without making a "deal with the devil" as it were. Anti-cheat is probably one of the better examples I can come up with. But hell, my car has in its privacy policy that it will damned well record any audio in the cabin of my car and send those recordings back to the mothership where they'll do WTF ever they want to with it.

Proprietary development may innovate, but it makes stuff that actively works against your best interests.
