What's your favourite DE?

I use KDE for my actual computer, and I like using LXQT for my VMs.

Sometimes, under heavy load or after prolonged use KDE starts getting a little buggy, so I run a simple command to reset it.

kquitapp6 plasmashell && kstart plasmashell

Edit : I also put xfce on a craptop that has LMDE on it.

EDIT 2: I doubleposted by accident.

The difference between Arch & Valve's corporate partnership and Omarchy's corporate partnership is kinda amusing

https://lists.archlinux.org/archives/list/[email protected]/thread/RIZSKIBDSLY4S5J2E2STNP5DH4XZGJMR/

I don't need to link to the Omarchy stuff. You already know.

Steam OS is built on arch, and to have a mutually beneficial relationship, Valve offered necessary resources to arch. No ownership, no bizarre millions of investment, just "we're making a derivative and want assistance, you need certain resources".

That's on top of funding and support of proton et al by valve to help spread linux gaming.

VM Spam thoughts; Nix, Guix

I made a (tangentially) related meme to my personal VM spam "hobby". I've been checking out distros and DEs and WMs on different virtual machines to see how things differ from one to the other. I think I'm passing over the other part of the normal distrobution curve where the distrobution doesn't matter much, it's just a package repo and file distrobutions, and they're based off a few central pillars anyway.

Anyway, I wanted to check out Nix as my next one to slop on and gawk at and, I checked wikipedia to see if it was a part of the whole fascist/crazy part of linux, and sure enough

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NixOS#Community_controversy

The letter contains arguments and allegations on Dolstra's leadership: control over the community, discrimination against marginalized communities, and quality impacts on Nix's development.

OK, let's try GUIX... well shit, I get 502 errors for that one.

Anyway, do you play around with VMs just for fun and trying stuff out? Did you stick to mainline OSes or fuck around with reallly specific opes?

Did you install and mess about with Nix from scratch or did you get a flake?config? from somewhere else and go for that. Do they work like debian blends or fedora spins?

Showerthought on [email protected]

I subbed to that comm because I thought I'd see news or suggestions about new things that have been released for linux, or suggestions on things to do to make myself a better linux user.

I'm seeing a lot of stuff about incremental kernel updates or adaptive minutae of infrastructure like DEs.

To be honest, what the fuck was I expecting? Still, better to stay subbed than not.

did I uninstall correctly?

So I recently tried Mailspring, and decided it was not for me. So i found it on the menu, right clicked and selected uninstall (Mint Cinnamon).

Now I am concerned if all files and cache have been deleted. I then ran "apt remove mailspring" ( My firt stime typing my own command on the terminal by memory!!!! - i feel so nerdy in a good way!!). Anyway, that could not locate package.

Should I be concerned of it having left any files behind, or am I safe to assume that all files have been deleted?

The reason why I am asking is, that the program (mailspring) was running when I deleted it though the menu and kept running after deletion! I just couldn't find it on the menu any longer.

The 5 things that I noticed the most as a new Linux usb (mint cinnamon)

I am only a few days into using exclusivly Linux and generally I feel its going ok. There are only a few things that irritate me but none of them as such are deal breakers

1: Not being able to see thumbnails in the 'open file' / 'save as' picker

2: Getting used to Gimp instead of photoshop

3: Mounting internal drives manually

4: The sound feels muffled and weak compared to same hardware on windows

5: I have not been brave enough to attempt printing yet
