Roblox argues 8-year-old waived rights in wrongful death lawsuit

cross-posted from: https://sh.itjust.works/post/65376586

Can an 8-year-old waive their rights to sue a company by clicking a box?

That's the stance of Roblox, an online gaming platform that bills itself as a digital playground.

The argument comes as the $41-billion company is embroiled in a lawsuit with the family of a Northern Kentucky child whose death by suicide, her mother says, is related to use of the platform.

Free Speech Crackdown: Germany Deports Bob Vylan Frontman for Anti-Israel Chants

cross-posted from: https://toast.ooo/post/15368324

The frontman of British punk rap band Bob Vylan was denied entry to Germany, detained at the Berlin airport, and ultimately deported to the United Kingdom last month due to his pro-Palestine statements.

German federal police justified deporting the band’s vocalist on June 15, referencing a performance at the Glastonbury Festival in England in 2025 where Bob Vylan led a chant of “Death, death to the IDF,” or the Israel Defense Forces.

A police file on Robinson-Foster obtained by The Intercept alleges that he disseminated antisemitic narratives and Hamas propaganda that could “radicalise certain segments of the [German] population” and serve as “ideological justification” for terrorist groups or individuals. It also says that Robinson-Foster poses a threat to Germany’s public security and public order. Allowing him into the country would cause “considerable reputational damage” by creating the impression that Germany was making “no effort to prevent the spread of the propagated antisemitism and the associated calls to violence.”

MAGA America Now Needs Conspiracy Theories to Explain How The Odyssey Could Possibly be a Box Office Hit

Thankfully, the MAGA influencer network has been hard at work digging up the terrible truth: The entire world is engaging in coordinated fakery designed to project the success of Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey! It’s all part of a heinous plot to undermine classical western (white) values and the dignity of an ancient Greek story that has already been adapted roughly 1,000 times previously, including a beloved entry where Odysseus is played by a Jack Russell Terrier.

Peter Thiel Snags Top Prize from Politico’s Owner

cross-posted from: https://lemmy.ml/post/50209188

Politico’s parent company honors the “Antichrist” lecturer — without mentioning the $50 million he gave the CEO's son

Axel Springer, the German company that owns Politico and Business Insider, has awarded its top prize to ... Antichrist lecturer Peter Thiel.

The Axel Springer Award—previously bestowed on Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, Jeff Bezos and Sam Altman—will go to the Palantir billionaire at a ceremony in Berlin on September 24. CBS News boss Bari Weiss will deliver laudatory remarks.

CEO Mathias Döpfner extolled Thiel’s “courage and non-conformity,” and the press release states that Thiel has “shaped the public debate on innovation, freedom, and the future of Western societies.”

But Thiel is literally the guy who said: “I no longer believe that freedom and democracy are compatible.” He also famously hates journalism.

The announcement left out another important fact: Thiel reportedly made a $50 million investment in a new venture capital fund started by the son of Mathias Döpfner, Axel Springer's co-owner and CEO. The son, Moritz, is known as—get this—the “German JD Vance.” Moritz previously worked as chief of staff at Thiel Capital.

This is a glaring and unethical omission. How did no one at a newspaper company think to mention this obvious conflict? (Critics also noted that Axel Springer used a flattering, decades-old photo of Thiel that makes the mortality-phobic billionaire look fresh and young.)

Last year, I wrote about Politico’s $50 million Thiel problem. Perhaps it explains why that outlet has been so oblivious—or nonchalant—about tech fascism. Politico’s coverage of Thiel and his gang, who are a major force inside the Trump administration, has been woefully inadequate. The radical politics of Silicon Valley are lightly mentioned, a background noise, even as their most bizarre ideas are put into practice.

What does Thiel’s little quip about freedom and democracy mean in practice? Well, when you see Trump violating the law and the Constitution, raking billions of dollars into his family coffers through open corruption, sending law enforcement after journalists, and threatening to derail the midterm elections ... this is the wonderful reality Thiel and his ilk have imposed on us.

No mention of that from the Axel Springer CEO whose son is raking in millions from the man daddy’s company just gave its biggest honor.

Don’t get me wrong—there are great reporters at Politico who do great work. I know some of them personally. But this tight relationship with Thiel, a major collaborator of Trump whose companies are receiving billions from the Trump regime, is a massive credibility issue for the publication.

In Germany, the reaction was swift.

“The German Journalists’ Association (DJV) criticized the decision, stating it was incompatible with the values of the Springer publishing group,” reported Deutschlandfunk. “DJV chairman Beuster declared that Thiel was the figurehead of libertarian movements in the US, who trampled on democratic principles and the social market economy.”

Springer, for its part, says the award is a statement for “freedom of expression and an open culture of debate.” That’s rich. Thiel secretly bankrolled the Hulk Hogan lawsuit that bankrupted Gawker in 2016—a covert, years-long legal campaign designed to destroy a media outlet that displeased him.

And Thiel isn’t done. This spring, he funded a new startup called Objection, founded by Aron D’Souza, the lawyer who orchestrated the Gawker strategy. For a starting fee of about $2,000, the rich and aggrieved can pay to put a journalist’s work on trial before an “AI jury,” which then issues a verdict and assigns the reporter an “Honor Index” score.

A private, billionaire-funded tribunal that uses AI to attack journalists. Is this Axel Springer’s definition of free speech and open debate?

Here’s an idea for a media company: don’t give your top prize to a billionaire who bankrupted one media outlet and is funding a machine to harass the rest. Seems easy enough.

Axel Springer journalists with ethics and integrity should head for the nearest exit.

New textbook for 9th grade students in Greece promotes right and alt-right ideology

cross-posted from: https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/post/72319016

From this year and on, schools in Greece will have more than one book available for each subject for the teachers to teach from, that will be chosen by the teachers. This is the so called "Multi-Book" (Πολλαπλό Βιβλίο). There are pros and cons with this new approach that our government decided to enforce, but this post is not about them.

A friend recently sent me some screenshots of excerpts from the new textbook of "Social and Political Education", a subject for the 9th grade. The excerpts have been chosen and highlighted by the Instagram account @sexismproject.

I have translated the more important parts to English. In each expert, besides my translation, you will be able to find my opinion on the ideas that the text promotes and the original screenshot of the text (in Greek, as taken from the Instagram account).

Let's begin!

People are not born equal. From nature, they have different development abilities, since nature grants them different abilities and skills. (emphasis mine)

This is not too bad but I think it promotes the idea that people are unequal, and therefore some people should are superior or they should have more rights, "from nature" as the text says.

::: spoiler Screenshot of text :::

Self-improvement requires self-awareness and self-assessment. If these exist, the improvement process is relatively easy. Of course, there shouldn't be any anxiety or rush. We should want our improvement. And if we want it, we can succeed at it. There is no "I can't", there is only "I don't want to". So: if I want something, I can get it.

This is literally wrong. If people got something because they just wanted it, I suppose there wouldn't be any homeless people, because I'm sure that they want to own a house. Or maybe they don't want it hard enough I guess? This just promotes the grind mindset to kids and teaches them things that are just not true.

::: spoiler Screenshot of text :::

The teacher's role is important. This important role requires important people, meaning teachers that will have, in theory and practice, vision and passion for a better education system and society. Teachers that can enlighten the students and contribute to the improvement of the education system. Attention: not with their own and personal, political, ideological criteria, but with the criteria of the society, as they are expressed by the education policy of the current government. (emphasis mine)

This is the worst of all in my opinion. So the teachers should always teach the students only whatever the government believes, and nothing else. And we'll be teaching the students that this is "the perfect teacher", a teacher that repeats all the propaganda that is served to them by television and social media, making the kids of the new generation perfect government-supporting machines. What else can I say? Literally 1984.

::: spoiler Screenshot of text :::

However, young girls should be informed from a young age for the biological and mental differences that they have from men. A few practical pieces of advice for facing men are:

  • Remember that men are bigger in volume and in strength.
  • Avoid "dangerous places".
  • Avoid violent, aggressive, arrogant, narcissist, manipulative men, those who don't have empathy.
  • Stop your relationship, if your partner uses violence, because even if they apologize a thousand times, he will use violence again.

This promotes that men are superior to women, they may use violence against them and women will just have to protect themselves. So now young girls learn that they will have to fear men, and just tolerate the sexism. Also the last bullet point looks like it was written by Donald Trump himself.

::: spoiler Screenshot of text :::

@sexismproject has uploaded more screenshots of more similiar texts from the same books, talking about marriage and drugs, I just couldn't bother to manually translate them.

Anyway, if you made it to the end thanks for reading, sorry for any grammar errors you may find, I will try to correct them as soon as possible.

Big thanks to @sexismproject for pointing all these out! I'm not affiliated in any way with them, I just saw them, I got mad and now I'm trying to get more people to know about the stuff our government is pushing to the new generation.

Michele Reilly wanted Epstein to set up 10-12 person "coordinated secrets" to manipulate his enemies

This is basically MKUltra being used by the corpos. These techniques, when practiced by paid intelligence operatives, I think generally involve manipulation in the real world in addition to internet stalking.

For example, going into someone’s home when they’re going to be gone for a while and moving things around. Something seemingly innocuous like an item being in an unusual or suggestive place can invoke a fear response in the target if it remains unexplained or is followed by additional incidents.

This could be coupled with targeted information placed in public in places the target is likely to frequent, such as their commute to work.

Targets are discouraged from talking about the incidents by stigma surrounding mental health, and if they get targeted enough it will become difficult for them to distinguish the actual attacks from regular information floating about.

Lease requires signature of privacy violating addendum

Just got approved for a new apartment and reading through the lease before signing. They have an addendum that gives them permission (without compensation) to use your name, written statements, likeness in photos, videos, or voice, without exception or limitation, in any kind of marketing materials or social media. It explicitly applies to all residents including minors. It gives them permission to alter these media as they see fit, for all of time, and you waive your right to deny them or sue for libel or violation of privacy.

At the end of the addendum, it does say you have the right to revoke your consent to all of this via written notice. But you are required to sign this addendum. So now I have to write my own legalistic revocation of consent to go with it.

This is an absolute "fuck you" to

  • victims of DV, stalking, or other crimes where they need to keep their identity/living situation confidential

  • people who do not like having their picture taking (enjoying your time at the pool in spite of feeling bad about yourself in a swimsuit? Too bad, everyone can look at you now.)

  • everyone who cares about their privacy for its own sake.

Did I leave anyone out?
