List of RSS feeds distributed by each software on Fediverse

Introduction

As far as I know, the software used by Fediverse, a decentralized social networking site, makes information public due to its decentralized nature, and as a result, it's often possible to obtain feeds of the latest information via RSS.

However, the extent to which this is possible varies depending on the software's capabilities and features, and I was interested in the functionality of each piece of software, so I decided to write this article to research and summarize the state of RSS on Fediverse, including its URL structure.

This article is based on a pioneering article titled "Finding Fediverse Feeds" that appeared on the website Hyperborea: Kelson Vibber.

Stream RSS feeds to Your Fediverse Feeds

A well-known method of distributing RSS feeds from the web to ActivityPub is software (server) called RSSParrot, which was created for that purpose.

In addition, in the Japanese-speaking world, there is a public Mastodon instance called the RSSフィードbot鯖, which is dedicated to RSS Bots and is also widely used.

Private community here on the fediverse?

Hi guys, same Iranian guy here, first I want to say I really appreciate you guys helping me, love you guys you all are genuinely amazing people.

I read all your comments in my previous post and one thing I realized I'm not qualified for this at all. This is too dangerous and puts my life and many of my friends at risk.

So in the spirit of being pragmatic here and finding best solution meanwhile I figure that out. Where can we have a private community with moderation and admin tools and multi-topic discussions on the fediverse? Is that even a thing? I know that's not how fediverse works so the answer is probably a hard No. Then where should we go? Discord have all this but that's not my preference at all. I know Reddit has private subs but I don't like reddit like many of you guys. What is the compromise here what do you suggest I should do?

Running my own fediverse instance for the people who need it the most

Hi guys, I don't know if this is the right place to ask for advice about this so if I'm in the wrong place kindly show me where should I go.

With that out of the way here is my back story, I'm Iranian and as many of you guys heard in the news there are mass uprising, protests and geopolitical conflict going on here. So naturally our theocratic dictatorship leaders here decide on a whim when the whole country can have internet access to outside world or not and when they cut it off there is no safe place for people to keep in touch when we need it the most. Mostly they want to keep people in dark unaware of what's going on out there...

Here is what I thought, Can I deploy and run my own fediverse instance in this situation on VPS hosted inside the country? Me and a few of my trusted friends are the admins of a small local community of around 200 people give or take but this community can grow to 1000 roughly in future. I can be an example for my fellow countrymen here if I can others can too and many other local communities can be shaped like this inside the country... Which fediverse platform we should choose? Lemmy or piefed comes to my mind but I'm a total noob I have no background in programming. I can use LLMs for help Where should I start? Can you guys help me here. I'm a little lost all this is uncharted territory for me

it would be good to have a nice activitypub debugger

it would be good to have a simple tool to view activitypub content. like user profiles, posts, etc.

this is because there are sometimes federation issues (posts show up on one instance, but not on the other). it would be good to have a better understanding of what is happening there, maybe by having a simple tool to see what is actually being transmitted over the AP protocol. like, if i open my own user profile from mastodon, it only shows me about half the posts that i actually make. why is that? it would be good to see whether the data is actually correctly sent from the lemmy server, or if it's just wrongly interpreted on the mastodon side of things.

maybe something like activitypub-read "https://feddit.org/u/gandalf_der_12te" and it shows you something like that:

Closing down our short lived Federated Community. (Would love for someone to take over)

You can track the main post on our community while it is still up (https://forum.unfinishedprojects.net/topic/46/unfinishedprojects-will-be-closing-down.)

But essentially our community that was started not too long ago was an experiment by myself and two others who were hoping to create a space on the fediverse that acted as a sort of Commons for people to iterate and work on various Openly licensed projects together (of all types, to include not only software but all various disciplines). See here for more on what our community hoped to become: [ https://unfinishedprojects.net/wiki/About/Vision ]

In short, it is a combination of a federated forum and a public Wiki, where individuals can collaborate and contribute to a wide array of projects - using their diverse skills, knowledge and experience - to create a hub of open projects... and allowing individuals to make small contributions without needing to commit long term to any one project.

The reason I am posting this is not to promote the platform (because I have already tried and mostly failed), but because I truly still believe in the ideas and vision that we had for it. Ultimately, I just realized that I am not able to be the one to bring this vision to life.

Although I know it's unlikely, it would be nice if someone else saw the same potential for this platform to create a space on the internet that fights against the internet that "big tech" has been pushing for it to become.

So all that to say, I hope that this short lived experiment can either inspire someone else to iterate and improve on our failed attempt, or maybe even "take over" the already existing platform.

Either way, it was a short lived experiment, but I enjoyed the journey and the few connections I made along the way! If nothing else, it helped me reflect on our current standing of internet spaces, and what they might someday be able to evolve into given we have enough buy-in from like minded individuals.

I know most of you have probably never heard of our platform, but for those of you that have and engaged with it in any way, I appreciate your time and I apologize for any wasted time or effort in our shutting down after only launching recently.

Can we finally admit that Lemmy is just Reddit trying to tell you its not Reddit?

I mean, the behavior of the community speaks for itself. They try so hard not being the thing they ran from three years ago, but in the midst of their attempt, they end up evolving into the very thing they ran from. Its like they just didn't like being on the platform of origin, promised they'd do better, then realizing how separated they are to where they just recreated it by instinct.

Power-Tripping Mods, Gaslighting Users, Immature Moderators, 100 Rules to follow but contradicts itself .etc

I can just go on and on and on. Oh and I don't even care about this stupid debate that happened between .ML and .World because there's virtually no difference and it is just nothing but a sissy online slapfight.

Was Pinetta Abandoned?

I'm trying to move a lot of my social media habits to the Fediverse in light of digital ID/mass surveillance bills being pushed in Canada, and I remember hearing about Pinetta, a federated Pinterest alternative awhile back. Does anyone know what's happened to it? It doesn't look to have had any updates in a few years. I'm wondering if it's been abandoned?

Does anyone know of any other federated Pinterest alternatives? Pinterest has been how a lot of small businesses survive over the years. It'd be wonderful if there was a federated alternative to it.

Fedecan.ca has been updated with a generalized threadiverse section, an updated list of alternative UIs, and an RSS feed for announcements

Generalized 'Threadiverse' sections

Previously, we had separate guide sections for Lemmy and Piefed, with very few Piefed specific pages. Instead of writing a new set of pages for Piefed, we have generalized most of the Lemmy pages into pages that can be applied to any threadiverse platform. When the page can use additional Piefed specific information or screenshots, we added a "🛠️ Help Needed" card near the top.

This includes the following pages:

Since 'privacy' information will be specific to each platform, and there is more of a risk if a user is confused about that information, we are keeping those pages separate. The existing Lemmy page is still up, and there is a work-in-progress page for Piefed that a contributor is working on.

At this time, the moderation, admin, and dev sections are still separate.

  • We will likely generalize the moderation section next, once the example rule templates are ready
  • The admin sections will likely stay separate
  • The future of the dev section is uncertain, and it might be generalized to the fediverse level

Updated 'Alternative UIs' page

https://fedecan.ca/en/guide/threadiverse/alternative-uis

The entries now follow a consistent format, and are sorted alphabetically after the default UIs. We have also added a summary table that compares all of the alternative UIs.

RSS feeds for announcements

These announcements are intended for users that have accounts on our platforms, or are interested in news about our organization.

You can use it by adding the following link to your RSS feed reader / aggregator: https://fedecan.ca/feed-en.xml

Other changes

Other changes include:

  • Updated the wording on the "Our Platforms" section so that it is clearer for new users: https://fedecan.ca/en/#our-platforms
  • We published a few older announcements to the website. They existed only as Lemmy/Piefed posts in the past: https://fedecan.ca/en/announcements
  • Updated the donation page with a nicer comparison table and option cards. We did not make any changes to the donation options, that will come at a later time: https://fedecan.ca/en/donate
  • We made fixes to the footer responsiveness and style

If you are coming from Reddit: YSK that Lemmy and Piefed have no karma. Don't delete your posts.

cross-posted from: https://lemmy.today/post/54923731

Some accounts are deleting their posts after a few downvotes. It's devastating on communities like c/asklemmy.

Lemmy doesn't track an account's karma like reddit. So, all downvotes will be isolated to your post or comment and won't affect your account—unless you wrote something truly horrible.

Remember lemmy is a community effort. Deleting a post also removes all comments on it. So you are not only robbing the effort others put in, you are actively removing knowledge from the fediverse. Others won't be able to find it through search and lemmy will seem lonelier than it already is.
