Hshop is still preferable for 3DS games however.) > > Vimm's Lair: https://vimm.net/?p=vault (The tried, the true. Vimm's Lair is a good source for clean rips of official roms. Their gamecube isos are nkit.iso but that hardly matters for the subject at hand. Imo, they are the best option for GBA games. > > If anyone has any questions feel free to reach out.

The DS lite is a low cost and slick looking portable gaming console.

Even when it first released the price for the value it had at the time was low. Especially compared to modern consoles like the PS5, or Steam Deck.

It's small, and looks really simplistic. Even features a touch screen.

Games on the DS have a sorta in between ps1 and N64 graphics. Having sharper looking textures compared to the N64.

One game in particularly to play on it to get some of the best out of its specs, is Lego Star Wars complete saga for the DS looks and plays surprisingly console-like on the small screen and lower specs of that system.

Also get any of sport and mini game compilations. Mario Party, Wario Ware, and Mario & Sonic at the Olympic games. You get many games in one title why not?

Access Infrared Sensor using devkitPro?

TLDR: Did anybody successfully communicated with the infrared sensor embedded in some DS cartridges using devkitPro?

Hello all,

bought a copy of Walk with Me which comes with a infrared pedometer.

To transfer the data it has a infrared sensor built in the cartridge similar to how the Pokéwalker.

Problem is the games on Personal Trainer: Walking are not that great. At least not compared to what Nintendo did with Street Pass on the Nintendo 3DS. So now im here wanting to do a homebrew version of "Puzzle Swap".

I found these two posts which go over the insides and what is being sent.

Im still unsure where and how to start with reading that on the DS though. Did anybody even managed to access the infrared sensor?

PS: I am aware that posting it on here has slim chances of getting any help. I just really like lemmy and people on here so I thought ill try my luck on here as well :)

Tips for people using 3DS Sound in 2026

cross-posted from: https://feddit.uk/post/45112933

Removing images

I have meticulously tagged all of my music files on my PC with images as well as all appropriate text info (I use MusicBrainz Picard for this purpose, but most ID3 tagging software works). However, when I loaded these files on the 3DS, the folders took seemingly forever to load, despite 3DS Sound not supporting images. This turned out to be because the 3DS still had to go through these images even though they weren't loaded, so stripping them from the files resulted in far faster load times.

File conversions

Since the 3DS does not support FLAC, I had to convert my music to AAC for it to play. It seems the 3DS, like some iPods, is very picky about the encoder that gets used to create the files. The one I have found most success with is iTunes' converter (used either directly or through Foobar2000, both on Windows). I did manage use some FFmpeg settings one time that managed to get a consistently playing file with all metadata, however that command has escaped me.

EDIT: Linux encoder support

Did some experimentation after this post and it seems the Fraunhofer AAC encoder is compatible with the 3DS, unlike FFmpeg's default encoder. However, due to licensing restrictions, to use it with FFmpeg requires you to install a version with the encoder enabled, which is usually not provided by most Linux distros. Therefore, the best way I found is to install the fre:ac Flatpak (which includes the FDK AAC encoder), and to strip the images using either FFmpeg or MusicBrainz Picard. Alternatively, on the command line you can use this with the fdkaac tool:

ffmpeg -i input.flac -map 0:a -f caf - | fdkaac - -b 320 -o output.m4a

replacing the file names with what you wish to use. This command also removes all images using the map option, so no further processing is needed.

StreetPass

It's surprisingly active still (at least where I live)! However, in order to use it, you need to specifically add songs to your StreetPass playlist as well as enable it in the menu, which is a step many people skip.

Random other bits and pieces

Tired of the random drums going off whenever you put your 3DS into your pocket? If you tap the icon enough times, you can make it have a crossed out symbol, which disables the button. This also allows you to cycle through a few other sounds.

The 3DS is very picky about folder sizes, so any folders with more than 100 files will only show the first 100 files. If you have big multi disc albums, split them into disc folders.

The interface colour can be changed in the settings menu to any one you choose, and is reflected in all the menus.

If you have folders that take time to load, after the first time you load them, the index stays in memory. This means any subsequent loads before you close the app will be far quicker.

Local play games vs or together?

Hey, I have my own 2DS modded/hacked for a long time, I mostly only play CTGP 7 on my own/online. But that is just a result of neglect over time. I just followed the guide to hack my nephews 3DS and so far only have CTGP 7 on it too, (I literally did it tonight) and looking for any games where we could play as part of a team, or against each other using mods or any multiplayer that is still available. I have to get him a larger SD card, as he only has 2GB card.
Are there many/any other games that we could still play locally? Or together online?

Analog Stick mods?

The factory default analog stick on my 3DS has a very smooth texture, and I have to keep repositioning my thumb on it. I've seen one hardware mod where a guy installed a 3D-printed stick on his, but didn't see a how-to and I haven't seen any alternative ideas.

I'm curious what's out there - What's your favorite analog stick mod?

Who else hopes that Nintendo will implement an immersive/wholesome UI/System for the Switch 2 such as the 3DS and Wii U had?

Growing up with the 3DS and Wii U I really miss those times of the highly immersive systems. For me this was what made Nintendo so great.

I know that nowadays everything seems to be optimized for efficiency and practicality in this highly connected world where everyone has a smartphone and is seeking this quick pleasure.

But I'm craving these small things that made life so great. I miss these times so much of collecting StreetPass points, finding strangers Mii's in Mii Plaza when going to a mall or connecting with friends, having all these mini games like Camera, AR games and even the immersive Mii makers where I spend hours creating Mii's and watching them walking around. And of course, the customizable home menu with music and all these responsive animations.

It was like there was an entire world inside the 3DS and Wii U that could suck you in where you could spend your lifetime in without a sense of time and it was amazing. It gave you a home environment where you could feel comfortable, secure and relaxed. And I'm wondering where this went.

My thought is that Nintendo in a way might've intentionally made the Switch's UI so soulless and depressing to have a bigger differentiator with the Switch 2 since they can only do this much in terms of hardware. Cause they didn't even give us something as simple as an internet browser with some update which even the DSi had (and I think even the DS with some cartridge expansion. And not forgetting that the Wii U had YouTube and Netflix etc.). Because so far all we've seen is a slightly bigger Switch with magnet Joy Cons and a new Mario Kart.

I'm really hoping that they will go back in that direction cause this really was Nintendos DNA and I miss it so much. What are your thoughts on this?
