Ah yes, yet another 'red line.'
So that means it's a good move that bothers russia 👍
What are you gonna do? Invade Ukraine?
Just what 'serious consequences' can Russia give to US and Europe now that their economy and military are destroyed? We already don't do most business with them, and it seems that NATO would easily counter the Russian military.
These are the consequences... for invading Ukraine/Europe. Making Russia foot as much of the bill as possible is just about the most no-brainer decision I could ever imagine.
If I were Zelenskyy, probably any escalation by Russia against the US and Europe short of maybe nuclear war would probably be near the top of the list of things I'd enjoy seeing. It would simplify a great many things about the conflict for Ukraine.

Churchill used a similar phrase ("this certainly simplifies things") about Pearl Harbor in his history of World War II; up until that point, the US had been theoretically neutral, though supplying the UK. At Pearl Harbor, Japan attacked the US and declared war, followed not long thereafter by Italy and Germany. For Churchill, who was -- and I think as history has shown, rightly so -- far more interested in the grand strategy implications, not the operational impact, the attack was very much a cause for celebration.

Whatever we do, the root of the problem is "internal escalation" in Russia. Russian media spokesmen and officials compete with each other in their brutality and ruthlessness toward enemies. Less brutal people are considered disloyal "foreign agents". This has been going on for years and has led to the current situation. Whatever we do, this "internal escalation" in the Ruscist propaganda bubble will continue and lead to external escalation.
The US should politely cut off diplomatic relations and ask Russia diplomats to leave, except for the minimum staff needed to issue passports and manage services related to that. All of the attaches and their entourages need to go. Is there any reason why useless people with diplomatic immunity should stay in the US to spy? I think the DC nighttime entertainment industry can take the hit.
