When this post is 6 hours old, lemm.ee will be going down for an upgrade [Edit: upgrade complete]

Hey folks!

Lemmy 0.19 was released this week! It brings a bunch of awesome new features, so I hope you are all willing to forgive some downtime in order to upgrade to this latest version.

Unfortunately some migration will be necessary as part of this upgrade, so it might take a while, but I will try to keep it as short as possible.

I hope you are all having a great holiday period, and I will see you soon in 0.19!

Edit: Update complete!

Welcome to 0.19! Unfortunately, the upgrade took somewhat longer than usual, but I believe everything is in order now. As always, please let me know if you notice anything strange, and have fun!

Using relative time to display timezone-agnostic date is brilliant lol

I've never seen Reddit upgrade their Lemmy version 🤔

Comes back with the chadest post possible

Thank you, man! I was curious about your absence in the last 2-3 months, but figured there is not really much to do until the BIG upgrade. Thanks for being here, being you! Awesome admin, awesome instance! Thanks for all your work!

Yep, lemm.ee doesn't defederate so aggressively. This isn't in support of tankie groups though, if anything it's in spite of feelings towards hexbear.

5

FYI, if anyone had 2fa it will be disabled after this upgrade and you'll have to do it again.

13

Well, the update came out on Friday so that tracks. Besides, this update comes with a whole db shake up (took about 30min on my one user instance) so it makes sense to do it over the week end.

PSA For lemm.ee users who cannot sign in and are getting messages similar to "logged in (green)" "incorrect credentials (red)" back to back when trying to sign in:

  • Clear your browsers cache for lemm.ee
  • Try to sign in again

Not sure if this is widespread but it worked for me.

11

Keep calm and lemm.ee on.

Time for another donation!

Question: will this affect our ability to upload pictures?

Since the upgrade to v19 I've noticed the all applications and web site seem to be very very slow to initially launch and return subscription and user info.

This is happening in both Voyager app, Thunder, web site default and web alexandrite.

Is anyone else experiencing similar issues?

9

Yes, I am seeing it across multiple Lemmy apps as well. It has made it virtually unusable for me.

3
lemm.ee

Voting on a post appears to no longer count as "read", and thus is not filtering from feed. Intended? Or am I doing it wrong?

Still very excited for this upgrade, thank you!

edit: I guess on the plus side, it looks like it's not "just me", so maybe there's a bug they're working on.

My feed is just a bunch of already read stuff now, I don’t know how to refresh anymore :(

3

I'm having this issue as well. Let me know if you find a solution.

2

Tried that, as well as purging all browsing data/cookies.

I am just using web app, no 3rd party.

1

Look forward to a lot of the features this will bring, thanks.

lemm.ee

Still seeing "read" posts, even thought "show read posts" is unchecked. This didn't happen in 0.18.

7
lemm.ee

I also still have that issue, said the same further down. Can't seem to find if this is an official bug/issue or not.

3

This one seems to be specific to lemm.ee, other instances on 0.19 don't have this problem.

2

PSA for Thunder (ios) users: account management gets messed up after this upgrade. Logging out and logging back in again fixes everything.

6

This is the perfect Christmas gift and the new upgrade looks great! Excited to see Lemmy continue growing. It’s really helped improve my relationship with social media and cut back on my doomscrolling while encouraging me to participate and break out of my lurker shell.

After the lemm.ee server upgrade (excited!), when I scroll past the first loaded Subscribed "page" in the Jerboa app, it provides a "Posts failed loading, retry" message. It seems to dynamically load multiple pages for "Local" and "All" just fine. I have no idea if this is a server/lemm.ee or client/Jerboa issue, just wanted to see if anyone else has seen a similar problem or has ideas to fix. Thanks.

4

Seems OK via the browser (hit next to load a few pages). Might be the app, or the Jerboa app (0.0.52) interacting with the new server weirdly? I may try a full re-install just to be thorough.

Edit: tried a full uninstall, reinstall, and login. Same issue on my end. I suppose it may be better to try and attack this from the Jerboa side.

1

I had to log out and back in yesterday after the server upgrade. For good measure, I just logged out, cleared cache and data for the app, and logged back in again, and am still experiencing the same problem.

1

Thanks for the warning, and thanks for keeping the instance up to date! Much appreciated.

4

I'll be sleeping, nice timing yay. Thanks for your work tho!

Slightly disappointed that it only blocks posts from blocked instances, not users.

2

Oh I didn't even realize it worked that way. I think that's kinda nice though, so you don't get partial conversations. It is a really bad thing though if there's a toxic instance that continues to harass you, so it should probably change for that reason alone. I wonder if they can still see your posts if you've blocked their instance?

lemm.ee

Something up with search? Doesn’t seem to work (both in the Memmy app and Lemmee in the browser).

2

Thanks for your commitment.

Cheers lemmurians. Keep up the engagement coming.

My account wouldn't validate any more in Jerboa, so I logged out, cleared my cache, and now the app crashes when I attempt to log in.
My other accounts are working, though. Not sure if it's a lemm.ee problem or a Jerboa problem at this point.

The version on the play store is not current, or at least, it wasn't when I last checked. You need at least 0.51, I think. If the play store is still out-of-date, you can grab the latest and manually install it from here.

It did eventually update and the app is working with lemm.ee now.

lemm.ee

How's it performing for you? Are you having the same issues as I am? I get a loooooooot of "socket timeout" and "posts failed loading" errors. Also, the "Show Read Posts" setting no longer works at all, even on the website.

1
Dettweilerreply
lemm.ee

So far, just the normal amount of timeouts and post load failures. I don't normally hide read posts, so I have not tried that feature.

2
JakenVeinareply
lemm.ee

Lol, "the normal amount", did you normally have those kinds of errors, before 0.19? I sure didn't.

1
Dettweilerreply
lemm.ee

Yes, but I think it's server dependent. Lemm.ee and lemmy.world have been fine.

2

Yes, it's server-dependent, and lemm.ee is the server giving me a lot of trouble the never used to.

I had a similar issue in Boost, but logging out and back in fixed it. There was an update a couple weeks ago that fixed logging in on 0.19 instances. Looks like Jerboa got a fix as well.

1
Dettweilerreply
lemm.ee

That's the problem though. I can't log back in because the app is crashing. Logging into other instances is fine.

1

That one was a Jerboa problem for me, installing the latest version from the GitHub seems to have fixed the login crashing for me

2

Awesome, thanks for keeping the instance up-to-date!

1

Do you have an approximate timetable for the upgrades/downtime?

Thanks for all you do!

Since the update to "UI: 0.19.0 BE: 0.19.1-rc.1", pagination for comments seems to be broken? or disabled? @[email protected], do you know if this is a lemm.ee thing or a lemmy thing? I don't see other people mentioning this when I looked for an issue.

What I mean: go to https://lemm.ee/c/meta?dataType=Comment&sort=New, and scroll to the bottom. The "Next" button is disabled (and if you edit the html to enable it, pressing it does nothing).

0

This is for sure a Lemmy thing, not a lemm.ee thing, but I can try to investigate further if I get a chance.

2
lemmy.world

Sure, "For an upgrade". Whatever you gotta tell yourself bro. We don't care when you go down, just upon whom.
