Update on an earlier post; I've given the eyes some shading and made a second version with red spirals in the eyes.
Kinda feel like mistakes were made with the spiral one though.

It's a clear 2D effect, maybe you want to try a more 3D effect (so thicker lines and distances in the middle, thinner at the border? I mean as you said mistakes were made idk :-) The slight inconsistency in line with is ok IMO, or you have to do it like in one go, hit or miss style, which can wreck it all ofc!
I was gonna go with something like that if I could but as is evident, I can't.
Not with that attitude ;-) or is there some other thing blocking you from trying?

Make a third with hypnotoad eye's and the make some more it could be a thing.

The bright red and tight spiral effect look great.

I was hoping to make it prettier but it came out pretty crooked so I gave it some chunkier outlines to make it fit better.
The drool matches the spiral better
