Why does lemmy.world not show thumbnails for link posts?
Is this a performance thing that will be enabled eventually, or something that's just messed up on my end that works for everyone else?

Pretty sure it’s a performance thing. Other instances of Lemmy show thumbnails, it seems specific to lemmy.world.
