What lemmy android app do you recommend? I have too many problems with jerboa.
What lemmy android app do you recommend? I have too many problems with jerboa. My problems with jerboa:
- When I write a pm to someone it sends that message to myself
- Language of the interface is Polish (my first language) and I can't change it to english (at least on the version that I'm on rn)
- Scrolling is very buggy (it stutters a lot)
- Often when I want to make a comment it doesn't send it and I have to go to my pc an rewrite my comment to be able to send it
- It doesn't play gifs on the feed by default, I have to open the image to play the gif
- It doesn't play gifs in the comments at all and there's no way for me to play them
- There are no embeds for videos (not sure if there's any mobile app that has that)
- etc.
What I'm looking for:
- An app with developed UI/UX
- Obligatory dark mode
- Something that resolves my problems with jerboa
Any recommendations or apps that I should follow the development of?

Liftoff is coming along nicely
Second this, liftoff is pretty amazing and they look to be integrating kbin the future as well.
This big "+" in the middle at the bottom of the app is a bit annoying, is there a way to make it smaller and move it down like the rest of the buttons are?
Liftoff seems to be open source. Pretty sure you can ask the dev about this feature.
I didn't find a way to customize that part so far.
https://github.com/liftoff-app/liftoff
White text is also way too bright in amoled mode so I will make an issue for this and making the "+" smaller.
Just installed, I'm liking it so far. It's a little laggy and stuttery, but hey, like all other Lemmy apps right now it's in beta. The navigation feels better to me than other options. Thanks!
Seconded! Upvoting seems slow, that's the only thing I noticed
Definitely recommend Connect for Lemmy. Gives me RIF vibes and has worked really well for me.
I like connect, though it's not without its own issues - the comment box is clunky, and poorly designed and if the parent post/comment is too long or you type a long comment the keyboard can cover the area youre typing in, making it impossible to tell if you are making mistakes without closing the keyboard.
Mainly reminds me of Sync haha. Sync for Lemmy is in the works, hope it works out!
It has pretty good configuration options, I've managed to make it function like RelayForReddit the app I've used forever
https://syncapps.io/
Wait for this app, if you are on android. It once was among the best Android apps in general and a very popular Reddit client. It's going to be great!
I used sync for almost a decade and I can confirm it was the optimal reddit experience. When the developer comes out with sync for lemmy I am immediately using it.
Same. I bought it in 2014 and it has been my most used app on my phone since then. 🙂
Fuck u/spez
I'm currently waiting but in the meantime I'm using https://wefwef.app
Wefwef.app install as a PWA it’s amazing
It's a turn-off for me that this is made up to look like an iOS app. I'm using an android phone and it's kind of weird to have the sudden switch between paradigms.
Wefwef is open source, it would be cool if someone could fork it and make a version that looks more like an Android app experience.
It’s on their roadmap to make an android interface. https://github.com/aeharding/wefwef
As someone who's only used android, I cannot see what makes this look like iOS so I'm fairly happy with it.
Please don't get me wrong, I'm not disliking the project. I just think the design isn't that great. That's all. Glad it works well for you.
Yeah I understand. the good news is that it’s on their roadmap to make an android UI/UX. https://github.com/aeharding/wefwef
Does anyone know why wefwef tells me my credentials are invalid when I try to login to my Lemmy.world account? I'm copy/pasting from a password manager, so I know I'm not typing it wrong.
Case sensitive. I’ve noticed this with some other apps too.
For me to log in I need to put all lower case. Despite my name having two upper case letters
Unfortunately this didn't work for me. It's not a huge deal as I'm really just waiting for sync for lemmy, but at this point I'm more curious why it isn't letting me login. Pretty strange.
I was searching for an android app but I guess I will give this web client a shot.
Try: Liftoff, summit, Thunder, connect, etc.
Its surprisingly impressive for a web app, when installed its hardly noticable that its not native.
There are a number of android apps in development and idk which is best right now. But I have been very impressed with this PWA
Liftoff, Connect, Thunder and wefwef , I think wefwef is having issues right now. still alpha but its really nice. i think devs are trying to stop hitting the api rate limit or something. wefwef is just like apollo but for android and ios
Also summit and lemotif
It does have an app, if you go into settings you can install it from there. I'm using it now and like it
I'll second wefwef
It's the best of the bunch right now
Still looking forward to Sync!
Does it not support kbin?
Sadly not. I setup account on vlemmy for now.
@FrayDabson
@Martineski boost for wefwef, it’s filling the Apollo-sized hole in my heart. For Kbin, following the work of @dansup with great interest… Pixelfed is such a smooth app, I have tempered expectations but high hopes for his Kbam app.
I agree. Wefwef is amazing. I am willing to give Jerboa another try in a couple of weeks but so far, of all apps I've tried, Wefwef stands out.
Thunder is a bit more limited but still you could try it
Liftoff has been great for me.
+1 for Connect.
Agreed. Loving connect so far. Lots of options in settings for appearance. I'm coming from relay for reddit so choosing 'reverse list' makes the experience most similar
You'd like wefwef.app
It does what you ask and more
Agreed, my choice until boost or sync launch most likely
I started with jerboa, then I'm now trying out connect.
I've customized both to feel likewhat I have with RiF (just text, no cards, amoled black).
I think I'll stay for a while with connect for a while.
Thanks for the recommendation! I just started using Connect, instead of Jerboa, and I really like it so far. It reminds me of RiF is Fun a bit and so far it's much smother than Jerboa.
I use Liftoff and wefwef
Third for wefwef, gotta embrace good web apps when you see them.
Is it me or is it missing an option to sort by 'top'?
It doesn't have a top filter for the Frontpage but inside each post/comment it does.
Same here, they both work well
I'm waiting for Boost for Lemmy. I used boost for reddit for years and I would hate to see it go
Same here man boost on reddit was my shit for years. If boost looks and feels the same as it did on reddit I will be delighted.
Me too bud, just got the good news about the upcoming Lemmy app this morning and I'm over the moon.
Using connect but waiting on boost for lemmy. It's pretty decent so far
Wefwef is great
I discovered wefwef today. It's the most impressive web app I've ever used, to be honest. Let alone being my new favourite Lemmy client.
I think it'll take some time until these apps become that andvanced. Most lemmy apps are in a pretty early stage of developement and still highly WIP.
Some third party reddit apps seem to be planning on moving to lemmy, so maybe we'll see something better coming around the corner in the near future.
Boost, my favorite one, didn't get updated for quite a while and got a nice update pushed out after the API changes were announced. Kind of heartbreaking to see that effort destroyed, but the dev has announced that boost for lemmy will be a thing. The UI of boost is one of the best I ever used, so I think that the lemmy version will be great even early in development.
Yeah, devs like these have the perfect kind of experience considering UI/UX developement to get this done well.
Currently trying out Thunder and it seems nice
I tried handful of apps and Thunder gives me that baconreader feel (a lot of content compress on a single screen)... and it amazingly snappy.
I'm using Connect. It's far from perfect but nowhere near as broken as Jerboa.
I used Liftoff for a bit, but Connect has been the closest to the Reddit app I've used for a decade.
Rif?
RelayForReddit but they're all similar in experience I think, it just depends which app you found first.
Yeah I'm using Connect and most of the issues I have are minor. Given how much change Lemmy is going through, minor bugs seems like the best case scenario
I use Firefox for Android. It works perfectly, everything is usable, good UX, has dark mode, and the app even works for other websites!
You can even install the ublock extension to block all ads & trackers in opened links, or use it to block large images by default to save data. And you can install the tampermonkey extension to add this userscript I made, which rewrites all links everywhere (not only on Lemmy) to always point to your home instance. It helps a lot with subscribing to communities and in general makes browsing the web and finding Lemmy links nicer.
I honestly don't see the reason why you'd want to use a separate app.
I use Firefox on mobile too. UI could be a bit better (like more separation between comments) but it's nice and seems to work better than the apps.
Thanks for the useful script!
Is anyone else afraid of making a typo in Jeroba because there's a 50/50 chance teh backspace key will fuck up a few previous words? It's the only app where this happens on my phone but I haven't yet seen anyone else complain
It's a known issue. Unfortunately it's a bug in a library they are using, so the only thing they can do until it is fixed is to disable autocorrect (which also doesn't seem to work atm). I've encountered the same issue in another app about 6 months ago, so I don't think it will be fixed anytime soon.
Thank you!
Connect and Summit are the two I'm using.
I'm trying Summit since this morning and like it
I'm glad you like the app! I'm in the middle of of a big release that should hopefully be available soon (Google Play is taking forever to review the app). Here's a preview of some of the features: https://youtube.com/shorts/8mIVZflUHhU?feature=share
Does your Connect app also appear blue in light mode?
For me, the light mode of Connect seems nothing like the app, on the Play store
The reply button disappeared on Jerboa for me. Thunder is ok. Wefwef and Connect are my current favorites I am trying out. They have the best UI and performance on my device. Wefwef is starting to win me over the more I use it. I 🤔 no Connect looks better though.
Wefwef works great, but has this weird 2010 iPhone vibe to it. Also, the layout breaks when trying to post comments for me.
Wefwef feels great but for some reason I cannot save posts with it
Connect is also a touch buggy, but I find it much more usable
right now liftoff & wefwef are more accessible than other apps
Connect for Lemmy.
Tried Jerboa and Liftoff for a few days but Connect is the first one that allowed me to have 2 accounts in 2 instances and do regular shit with them. Its the one that makes the most sense to me UI-wise, even though the way the comments are displayed is not the most pretty, but I think I can to play around with the settings to improve it.
I used Connect at first, and then recently got wefwef to try out as well. So far preferring wefwef, mainly for the layout. Something about the Connect controls on the left side of the screen was unintuitive/annoying for me, not sure why! But I'm keeping an eye on this thread because I don't have nearly enough experience yet to figure out what's best.
I think anyone is going to have issues with posts for a bit as thousands migrate here. Had all types connection issues yesterday and is spotty so far today. Servers look like being bombarded.
Jerboa has just been broken in general for me on my OnePlus 6t
The PWA of the lemmy site is honestly good enough
+1 for firefox for android.
Connect for Lemmy.
Also using connect. Used to use baconreader for a decade and it doesn't feel all that different.
Thunder has the best UX out of any of the lemmy apps I've used.
Agree! But tbh that wish right or farther right for upvoting and stuff is kinda weird tho, but overall I like it the most so far.
None of the current apps are amazing, but some are pretty useful already. I currently mostly use Liftoff or Connect. Jerboa is indeed way too buggy lately. I also have Thunder, Summit and Lemur, and I've signed up for Sync. I just checked out Thunder and it's also coming along nicely.
I would suggest to install a few and check them out every now and then. Basic functionality is there but time will tell which will get the most polished and which will suit you the most.
Been switching between Thunder, Liftoff and wefwef, so far I'm liking Liftoff the most, with wefwef coming in second. I used to use Boost for Reddit so now I'm waiting for Boost for Lemmy to drop so that I can finally switch from Reddit for good.
Using connect until boost is released
List of apps here https://lemmy.world/post/465785
I'm waiting for both Sync and Boost to come out with their Lemmy offerings and will probably end up with one of those. In the meantime, I'm trying Thunder and WefWef, but have also heard good things about Liftoff. Here is a list of the current (and upcoming) crop if you want to experiment: https://lemmy.world/post/465785
I use lemmy as a PWA. You can install it directly from your browser.
On mobile I don't really mind just using the browser. Everything works quite well and I prefer it over most of the apps. Now trying wefwef and it seems like a bit of an upgrade.
I had to leave Jerboa as well (at least until they fix the crashing on launch) and I'm liking Thunder (available on fdroid and github they have a iOS version for the interested) with connect as second favourite (available on the playstore, not sure about iOS)
Thunder has one annoyance, they don't really have a profile tab, so you can't see saved posts on the app. And connect's post writing sometime glitches on me.
The latest Jerboa update does seem to have fixed that fyi
The first time I tried installing jerboa from f-droid I couldn't even open it. Then I installed jerboa from my browser and the problems haven't appeared again
Had the same problem, I was spam tapping on the app while opening it each time and after some tries it started working and I haven't encountered the problem again lol.
The last few releases of Jerboa have been atrocious. It's currently crashing when backing out of activities, voting, or commenting. I tried Thunder but the UI is extremely confusing for me.
I know this wasn't asked, but the reddit is fun dev is making a Tildes app if you have an account there
I like Connect. It has it's own bugs though.
That's the one I'm using as well right now though the newest update introduced significant lag when interacting with the sidebar, I'm unsure if that's cause of the number of subs I subbed to.
I could be the case. I'm also on the latest and not have many subscriptions yet ( around 30 ) - the sidebar is still responsive and quick.
May i ask how many subscriptions are we talking about in your case?
Connect is what I've been using while jerboa is out of commission until lemmy world updates. Been a decent user experience so far. I still prefer jerboa.
I use WebApps from f-droid
I'm using https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.idunnololz.summit summit which is pretty nice except that I can't seem to find the settings, it does work well though.
I'm still new but I installed a bunch of apps to try (including wefwef, jerboa, connect and lemmur). My favourite so far is Thunder.
