Few days ago, I watched this video on YouTube of people secretly learning their enthic language to suprise their parents. They would find tutors online. I'm thinking to myself. These people are lucky that their enthicity is common enough that there is a tutor online

Not that I don't try. The few times I try with my parents. My mom is pretty receptive of it. My dad on the other hand...he made fun of me when I did it. I think he sees it like how a mexican guy speaks in perfect mexican but when it comes to certain words, they'll say it in perfect American accent. A Mishmash of perfect mexican with perfect American. That's how I sound like to him maybe. I hope that analogy make sense. Anyway, yeah that made me not wanting to learn it more and more.

I got made fun of from my cousin for speaking kinda terrible cantonese and english when i was a kid, that sour the deal so much i just quit learning both, all that just so i can communicate with him.

From what i understood, chinese mostly mingle together and have their own community, where everything haram is available there (when the state allowed it).

I came from smjk c and nowadays none of my ex classmates type in Chinese anymore lol. Sure we still speak mandarin when f2f with each other out of habit, but our work environments & in many cases our spouses are mostly English, so English kinda naturally replaced Chinese for many of us. We also speak English with fellow Chinese-educated colleagues at the work place.
Well speaking from experience, it’s mostly useful if you’ve China clients and your boss will ask you to tag along as a translator haha. But turns out the China clients often speak fluent English as well.
It's totally okay to feel that way — I'm also Chinese, but my main language is English. I'm not exactly a true Chinese either as my livestyle and beliefs differ a lot because I'm much more westernized and I'm an atheist. You are welcomed to open a new community for one or more of your interest stacks!
The people whom you describe are not the type of users who frequent here. Hard to create a community where the people you might share commonality with don't know you exist .
I think you're trying to find a place to call home in a completely wrong country (so to speak). The apps/websites that the mandarin community uses are completely different with almost no overlapped from the ones majority of the user here use.
I noticed recently a lot groups/pages popping up on FB (and being sponsored/recommende to me) that are essentially the type of things that Reddit has. Interesting, cute, funny pictures/articles/videos.
Maybe someone is capitalising on the collapse of reddit to convert people to fb over the last 2 weeks.
Hahahaha this is my first time lepak in a Malaysian subreddit and previously also never been on Reddit much. OTOH been on Fedi since Nov 22 daily hahahhahaha (it helps I'm not on actual mastodon and I've never been on a mega big instance)
Yeah definitely through after setting a kbin account, and that's only after discovering kbin slurps posts based on the first tag in post to put in the various magazines, and automatically assigns a tag to track and fetch based on the name of the mag. someone set up a m/Malaysia, and someone else browsed thru the Microblog section and commented on my post, and that was that. Finding this comm out is via finding that first wave of this year's migration, and as it is a number of us SEAsian have been doing own little thing since November, so it's definitely been nice to bump into each other. Redditors certainly more rajin and committed about interacting and posting stuff to make their own corner of Fedi theirs, and less complaining about nothing to do* - felt like an overnight shift into meeting local faces and making local stuff.
*I'm always gonna have feelings about the Twitterjaya folks who paling bising in Nov, set up accounts, complained about no follows/action, didn't do anything to make their fedi space interesting, and left, lolllllll. And see what happens this week - twitter locking out even viewing content if not logged in. So much for reaching out and public advocacy - rip all the callout posts.
Yeah that's probably why lmao. I don't check in too often except only to go to search and see specific film twitter accounts. If I check my actual timeline I know my blood pressure naik seeing all those familiar accounts now pretty much isolated like on a defederated instance XD
I posted on Reddit once in a while & stalk quite a few subreddits but wasn’t a “regular” user. I’ve been pretty active on Mastodon since the twitter-to-fediverse exodus though (before that I was mostly a lurker on Twitter). The fediverse has been a lot more fun than mainstream social media for me because of the smaller & more tight-knit communities.
Maybe, it's super annoying sometime. Or maybe because of that language filter, first timer will set their language and that might affect what you see here. They should've just remove the setting entirely
