The next few days are going to be wild. Brace yourselves

Tomorrow, reddit will be shutting off 3rd party app access. If the twitter migration is anything to go by, that means that the wave of new users coming in the next few weeks will be much bigger than the wave we saw earlier this month.

Our lead techy admin @[email protected] is also recovering from broken bones and surgery, so she will be slower to respond to issues :)

All of that being said, we're as prepared as we can be. We're currently running our instance on hardware with excess capacity to spare, but who knows if it will be enough.

So, good luck to all of us, and see you on the other side :)

Welcome! Be sure to check out the many apps in active development.

Oh, shit! It's PoppinKREAM! I'm glad to see you made it over here! I loved your posts and comments. :)

3

Commenting to help bump this comment up. We're grateful for the work you provide your community. Take care of yourself and do your best! We'll all see each other on the other side.

Thanks!

I'm mostly on the mend now and able to tap keys again. Which is timely given the recent Reddit and Twitter happenings!

RedditIsFun is down, so I am out. Used it for the 10 years I was there, and don't like the "New Reddit" they've been creating for monetization-sake.

I don't remember hiring a ghost writer for my autobiography, but you got all the details right!

10 years here as well. Was sad opening it up and seeing nothing, even though I knew it was coming.

20

Yeah. It's bittersweet for sure. I used to thoroughly enjoy reddit 5 or so years ago... and at the risk sounding like a crotchety old man, "it's not as good as it once was!" Things change, and I'm eager to see if lemmy is as good as it is in theory. Federated site sounds so futuristicly positive!

3

Was worse because they closed it down at like 5pm on the 30th where Reddit is based. I was hoping it would last till midnight :/

3

So I was going to go check and make sure Joey wasn't working and well lol it's up. Also their subreddit mentions red reader being up. What's that about?

2

RIF was how I found reddit in 2010. There wasn't even an official app for a few more years.

It's so sad how the apps got brought behind the barn and shot like they did. Sorta glad I found this community because of it. It's feeling like how I felt when I first installed Reddit Is Fun and seeing all the small communities.

Same, I've had a reddit account for 8 years, but I lurked since maybe a couple of years since it's inception. Used RIF for maybe 6 years.

I hate what reddit has become. I'm not someone who regularly participates with any communities, so I cannot really be relied upon to generate content, I'm a perpetual consumer rather than a producer.

I'm just looking for somewhere that gives me access to the latest news about the things I care about. So far Lemmy seems to have a lot if promise!

2

Yeah! It gives me a good vibe. Seems to hit upon what you're looking for too, so I hope you end up enjoying it!

3
lemmy.blahaj.zone

Do you have any advice on finding the subreddit equivalents? I followed a lot of hyperspecific subs like FortniteLeaks and Indiettrpg design and lfg stuff, and I've no idea how to find things like that here

3

Every instance seems to make a asklemmy or copy of other popular Reddit subs, so everything is spread out. I bet we just have to wait a bit to see where people will post, how much server power instances needs, which ones will survive and so on.

Interesting times indeed.

3
lemmy.blahaj.zone

Yup, same. Been on it since 2011 or so. I'm transitioning out of that space. Trying to find the most user-friendly Lemmy experience, atm.

2

I'm using jerboa, and it's been... okay, so far. Not a vast array of choices for mobile, but I'm optimistic.

2

Sync is dead, long live Sync (can't wait for their Lemmy client)

2

Welcome!

I came here in anticipation of this day. Let me know if you have any question about lemmy or kbin "the threadiverse".

I rode the Apollo train right to the end, about ten minutes ago. So long, Shitty CEO, please let the door hit you twenty times on the way out.

BaconReader went down too and I finally decided to make an account here. Interested to see how this goes but I know I won't be using the official reddit app

Aethonreply

RIF has stopped working for me in the last hour, time to finally ditch the Reddit grip and jump ship, honestly not a massive difference in community now, and hopefully some of the smaller niche subs will move over to Lemmy, enjoying my experience so far!

8

When RIF's infinite scroll came to a sudden halt, it finally became real. Hope this community can sustain a few thousand refugees.

3

Apollo is (well, was) one of my favorite apps. Just because of how well-designed and thought out it was, especially with the iOS design language. Sad to see it go, but at least I’ve got wefwef.

2

I guess Relay for Reddit is still going to work (with a subscription and no NSFW). I wonder how much it will cost.

1
lemmy.blahaj.zone

Well, rif is gone, so now reddit is too. I hope this place and others on lemmy grow to have vibrant and flourishing communities

31

I hope so too. There is less content but we all have to aim to grow it.

14

Now Twitter shitting itself in the name of forcing subscriptions is causing a mass migration to Mastedon. The Fediverse is going to get incredibly popular....fast.

27

I could deal with not having reddit sync, but opening twitter today and seeing that I have a tweet ration made me immediately sign up for lemmy. I imagine a lot of people are similar

16
lemmy.ca

Sync has stopped working for me now. Looking forward to the future on Lemmy!

26
lemmy.blahaj.zone

The reddit app I used stopped working yesterday (yes I know why but it's funnier to pretend I don't) so here I am! Trying to figure out how lemmy works in the context of the larger fediverse.

Download Wifwif (pwa) and tell your friends. Let’s kill that IPO

7

They mean wefwef, it's a Progressive Web App which means you visit their website (wefwef.app), press the three dots and select "Add to homescreen", instead of downloading it through the app store on your phone

2

On that note, jeroba throws an error every time i open it about how this instance is older than the lowest supported version, but it seems like i can still use most of the sites functinality? Just thought i'd mention that

23

Yep, that's a screw up by the Jerboa devs. If we upgraded to 0.18 we would lose captcha, and version 0.18.1 with captcha hasn't been released yet. So there is no way for us to safely upgrade to the version Jerboa wants just yet.

45
lemmy.sdf.org

Mine isn't crashing on launch, but whew, seems like a few regressions in the latest build. Errors out the wazoo, lots of stuff not loading and hanging. I might dump the F-Droid version for now since I think the Play Store one is slightly older.

4
lemmy.world

I switched from Jerboa to Thunder today. It's so much nicer, but still missing some features. The web app Wefwef is pretty nice too.

13

Like what? I'm about to launch an app just in time for the shutdown, my goal is to capture this wave and spread them out. If I haven't covered it already, I'll see if I can take care of it today

4
fadesreply
beehaw.org

I use Memmy and i have no issues. They’re going to be in the App Store very soon according to changelog

Here’s a link to beta if you’re on iOS

2

Jerboa kept crashing on me too. Im giving 'Connect' a try. It's ok - thou Im not a fan of the keyboard or the fact I constantly accidentally collapse threads

2

I was gonna keep lurking Reddit until Sync shut down, now I'm on Lemmy. Took me a little bit to figure the platform out tbh, having third party apps for it now seems to be great.

23
canreply
lemmy.blahaj.zone

I like liftoff and wefwef.app but try Jerboa again, either the instance or app must have updated because it's working for me right now.

10

It's pretty easy once you figure out where to sign up, and download whichever app you like best. It's actually pretty flexible imo

1

Was waiting for Narwhal to break and it never happened. Turns out the dev got a deal to not pay anything until he can release a ‘Narwhal 2’ that’s subscription only. Wasn’t an Apollo user but the dev got shafted and reddit didn’t offer anything close to what the Narwhal dev did. Still deleted my account as planned and deleted their app off my phone.

22
Olivereply
lemmy.blahaj.zone

Yeah I saw that too, spez is a piece of shit, did you also see all the lies he made up about the Apollo dev? It was so childish lol

12

Yeah. I was following all his posts even though I preferred a different app. fuck spez and fuck the dev of narwhal for being a boot-licker.

4

Fuck spez, certainly, but I can easily understand why Narwhal’s developer took the deal. I’m sure they invested a huge amount of time and effort into their app and it’s hard to walk away from that when there’s a viable path forward. Apollo’s dev would have probably taken the same deal, had it been on the table. The problem was never that Reddit needed to start charging for API access, it’s that they priced it unreasonably high after assuring devs they wouldn’t and also gave very little notice before those prices took effect.

8

Same with Relay, seems to be working just fine so guess he struck some kind of deal too

Give Thunder a shot, at least until Sync for Lemmy releases (and stabilizes)

12
sh.itjust.works

Have been trying Thunder, Jerboa, and Connect, along with a few others. Grateful to have options again, and ever appreciative of recommendations.

Posting from Jerboa now, but have been going back and forth between that and Thunder!

Wefwef seems like having issues with my Firefox. The keyboard does hide behind the active browser window. I am running kalyxOS might be a combination issue but never had it with any page before. When I reset the browser window it seems to work , annoying though

3

Also was using Sync, and was happy it mentioned about Lemmy in the death note of latest update. Hope Sync for Lemmy is up soon!

1
lemmy.ca

It's a good time to encourage those who can afford it to donate a couple of bucks to your home instance operator for server costs, etc. :)

21
sh.itjust.works

How can we do that? I'd like to support Lemmy and its instances in any way that I can, but am still very new to this.

2
kbin.social

Honestly, it's really hard to say what will happen. I do think there's gonna be an exodus from reddit, however it's hard to say where people will go after that. kbin has been coming up in discussions about reddit alternatives, but same with some of the other federated setups. I've been searching for the past week for something that looks/feels like reddit and this is the closest thing so far. I will say, hopefully since it's going down on a Friday, there might be a lull until Monday before people really start coming in.

20
Natorireply
beehaw.org

I really don't think that many more people are going to switch at this point. Not even sure why so many people think they'd be fine with everything the last two weeks have held, but the actual date of the API change would be the breaking point.

4

Many simply don't know about it. I was talking to a friend yesterday. I know he uses Reddit as we share memes and stuff. He said that he had no idea that that was happening. I helped him get onto Lemmy.

3

I mean, I knew it was probably hopeless that there would be any reversal but I stuck around until a day ago. I imagine that 3rd party app users, especially those who know they hate the official app, will be more likely to emigrate now that most apps cut off today. The only reason I used reddit as much as I did was because of Boost. I'm sure there are plenty of others who feel the same about other apps and stuck around until the end.

As for how many... I'm not sure. I saw a lot of people in 3rd party app subs posting about losing access but of those how many will go to Lemmy? We'll see I suppose.

2

I invade! I'm sad about the small communities that are dying but I hope I can be a part of new ones here!

18

Why not bring them along? I created a lemmy instance of the subreddit I used the most -- and posted about it in the subreddit. IF everyone does that (or promote existing lemmi communities), the traffic will move...

9
infosec.pub

I stepped away from that website years ago, saw voat come and go, and am giving this a shot. So far, it checks all the right boxes! Welcome one and all.

18

I kept my reddit account until today, coping that Reddit will go back on their word and allow Apollo to continue working. Granted, it didn't. So I looped shreddit with a PowerShell script and sealed the deal today and just put the final nail in the coffin and deleted my account. Guess it's Lemmy from now on.

17

Welcome! be sure to try some of the many apps. Let me know if you have questions.

4

Get well! Hopefully it won't be TOO bananas since I like the quietness without all the riff raff and bigotry of the other sites :P

13

Agreed! I'm a part of the reddit exodus, but I've been looking for alternatives for a while. A shame so many of the early options were so racist/fascist. Here's to a federated community without all of that nonsense!

4

Hi, I'm one of the RiFugees, using the same name I did on Reddit. This looks like my place on lemmy for now, thanks to all who had the foresight to set it up!

11

Thanks for being as on top of things as possible. I'm still mourning Apollo but hoping to bring some folks from reddit over here soon.

11

Heal-up, @supakaity. All best wishes to your body's restoration work.

11

Tomorrow? Nah they cut it off at 7 PM EST today, or at least they did for RiF.

Fuck Spez, Steve Huffman, you are a dickwad.

10

Wow... Who gives an unreasonable timeframe like that, then pulls the plug 12 hours early??

2
feddit.de

Apollo and RIF already stopped working, so I’m not sure if the influx of users will increase that much tomorrow.

9
hardypartreply
feddit.de

Seems like you haven't updated it, yet. I get a good bye page when I open it.

2

I've been here since earlier this month but now that "Boost for Reddit" is down, I'll be here a lot more instead of splitting my time 50/50

Thanks as always to you and @[email protected]!!! Best wishes that she gets better soon!

8

Thanks lovely. I'm back on my feet mostly now.. still pretty sore but better every day.

7

First comment on Lemmy! I think that it'll be hard to for people to understand instances at first but hopefully over time the value of chosing how you interact will be clear

8

I imagine we only have a few hours left of Boost. Set myself up here today after hearing about this place. Can't wait until there's more apps for it.

7

With the wefwef.app working as well as RIF, I know that my future bathroom visits will continue to be fun

Where did the twitter refugees migrate to? Mastodon? I haven’t been keeping up on twitter.
