Same. It reminds me of the early days of reddit with those small communities. Unless reddit goes back on its changes, more and more people will come here.
We might get some dope 3rd party apps and then we're golden.
I have had Reddit is Fun in the home buttons on my phone for the last 10 years. I pulled my phone out of my pocket an muscle memoried Reddit open like 20 times today.
I just switched Jerboa into that spot. It is crazy how much that changed things.
That's exactly what I did. RiF is still installed on my phone, but right now Jerboa has taken it's place. I hope /u/talklittle does something with the backend that allows it to work with Lemmy, Kbin, or others.
Crazy how Jerboa, an alpha app, is much better than the official app of a multimillionaire company. Also, I already don't miss using RiF. This is my new home.
Jerboa has it's issues. I would take a Lemmy is Fun in a second. Good for an alpha level app that wasn't prepared for this influx of users. Jerboa definitely got better with today's update.
I would love to see a Lemmy app using the RIF design! The RIF developer is focused on an app for Tildes right now, but even something just copying the interface would be nice to see.
I did the same. I removed the reddit icon and found myself tapping it's empty location several times. I replaced it with Jerboa for Lemmy and it fills the void a bit.
I on the other hand feel free lol.
I have no urge to check reddit and I'm still exploring lemmy. Also it's just better to go do other things instead of wasting my phone battery just for the sake of wasting time.
Yeah, I'll admit there is the excitement of having a new toy and figuring out how it all works. That takes away some of the boredom or time I'd be scrolling reddit.
Boost is what I have been using for years on android so this makes me super happy to hear. I'm gonna miss boost. I even donated to the dev a few times because I appreciated the app so much and he was very responsive when I wanted a new image hosting site to be supported within the app display.
Very much this. I've got an almost automatic habit of opening reddit when I'm bored and don't have much to do. After a couple of times of seeing that message, I've been searching for the lemmy counterparts for my favourite subs. Turns out a lot of them are getting some steam!
Sublems is an absolutely fantastic word that I am now adopting! E.g. "Hopefully soon Jerboa handles sublem links better in comments. That's something I loved about Relay"
ive been spending anywhere from 1-4 hours a day on reddit for the past..13 years? probably the most ingrained habit i have. Broke that habit as of two days ago. Weirdly enough, its not even that difficult. Its like i just understood that its time to move on, like a breaking point in a toxic relationship.
Only downside so far is having nothing to do during public transit. Not enough hobby specific discussion here yet, everyone keeps babbling about leaving reddit, like i am right now.. xd
The blackout is over after tonight, so I guess we'll see how things go then. I left because rif is shutting down on the 30th, so I figured I might as well cut the cord now. I deleted the app when the first sub I subbed to went dark, and I haven't looked back. Today is my third full day without it. I haven't been on Lemmy as much, which is definitely a good thing, lol, but I'm really enjoying it so far. The community seems much more conversational and less offensive. I don't get offended easily, but when people do it just for the sake of being offensive, I don't like it, and reddit was full of those people.
Most of the redditors only use reddit. To get news, memes, communicate, QnA, everything. That's the reason this protest isn't that effective. People are still gonna browse now and then and give them the sweet ad money, because people literally have nothing else to do.
I just noticed that I was 2 versions out of date (installed via F-Droid last week) and was annoyed at some usability bugs. The latest version seems nicer so far.
I'm interested in getting involved in development of Jerboa, so hopefully I find a few more annoying things that haven't been fixed yet. Feel free to complain to me to hopefully motivate me to actually fire up Android Studio and get working on it.
Hmm, I had a similar problem earlier with the " settings" for default listing type (wanted to default to only stuff I've subscribed to), and then I reinstalled from Google Play (v0.0.33) and it worked. I'll see if I can reproduce it on the latest code.
The main thing that bothers me right now is that sometimes it forgets I'm signed in when switching apps. I'm going to try reproducing that probably tonight to see if I can at least provide a workaround (e.g. pull to refresh should reconnect or something).
I too got the login issue, I found killing the app works for it to remember my account. I'm on version 0.0.33 too from F-Droid. As for the scrolling issue there is a comment on a GitHub issue mentioning it.
Cool. It looks like there's a jerboa community here: [email protected]. I joined that one and intend to be a bit more active there as I try to learn how to develop Jerboa.
Jerboa has seen huge improvements in the last two weeks alone. I think there's been a lot of traction on that front, and the dev seems particularly receive to feedback.
I personally use RedReader, the dev said he's thinking of adding support for other sites like Lemmy or Tildes, so I'll probably use that if it happens. The more choice the better though.
I purposefully moved RIF off of my home screen. My stupid muscle memory kept tapping it every time my idle brain opened the phone. Trying out Jerboa as an app for lemmy at the moment.
I'm on a Pixel so not sure if what I'm about to say is possible for everyone, but I used "Digital Wellbeing" to set a usage limit of 0 minutes for RiF, then put Jerboa in the same spot. Working for me at least to not have to completely change muscle memory.
Jerboa (mobile app for Lemmy) is really great so far! Feels basically the same to me as Boost was. The sign in process is a little odd (top left hamburger menu, accounts, add account).
I'm sorta looking forward to how lemmy/beehive/fediverse system improves. It's kinda exciting. Like sure things are a bit rough around the edges for now but so was reddit for a long time. Seems like there's a lot of people working to improve and make it better, and the communities are actually pretty big! I'm excited to get off reddit, that shit was getting stale and I'm hoping that this "reset" will also help build new communities that aren't just reposting the same shit over and over again.
Yeah I've been enjoying that aspect too, finding posts from communities I've never heard of before.
I never paid for Reddit, but I've already donated to Lemmy.world (mastodon.world) and the Jerboa app. I've done the same for signal. Just a couple of coffees worth, but I see myself doing it from time to time as I remember.
I'm just so pumped about the way things are growing here, and think this federated donation-based model for a Reddit-like app is fantastic.
That will probably take a while. The only reason we’re here is because of reddit and spez being a greedy pigboy, so naturally that’s gonna be a topic of discussion for a while.
Once this place has a chance to build up a bit of an identity, I suspect that’ll go away.
It's usually difficult for me to break habits, but right now I'm motivated by rage and contempt, which is making it a lot easier. And the fediverse is like a methadone drip to come down from the heroin-like addictiveness of endless information.
Tip: instead of opening reddit, just search "reddit" and read all the tech news articles shitting on Steve Huffman in diplomatic ways. It's very satisfying.
I replaced the reddit app shortcut on my phone with the Jerboa for Lemmy so that when, through sheer muscle memory, I try to open Reddit I open Lemmy instead.
Honestly, I hope I spend less time on Lemmy because I was on Reddit too damn much. Maybe this is exactly what I needed to break an unhealthy habit.
I am getting more replies here and things feel overall more active than what I have seen on reddit in years. The fire has brought the engagement out in people and its a blast.
If you lack something to post, shitpost, for the cause.
That were first two days here, but now I'm invested, people started to share more and suddenly i catch myself scrolling Lemmy for 15 minutes instead of working
I wish I could find an enjoyable experience, but it’s tough to use Lemmy the way I want on iOS. I’m sticking with it though and hoping tooling catches up soon.
Try Mlem! It's still in Testflight (beta version for iOS), but you can create testflight account and download it for free. It will also help creators of the app find bugs and whatnot! I'm using it rn and it's nice, they're very passionate about it!
if not mlem you can also open Lemmy on safari and then make webapp by tapping share icon and then choosing "add to home screen". It will create bookmark on home screen that dont have browser interface and it's working really good actually.
I doctored my bookmarks to exclude Reddit. On my phone I replaced it was Jerboa, which I was very impressed with as an alpha app. It's already better than Reddit's official app. I'm very guilty of doing the same like you. Launch up reddit then correct myself. I'm comitted to the move away.
@wheresyourshoe@CascadeDismayed RIP Rif i'm going to miss the notifications on new post. I actually got a lot done. go about my day. check rif for new notifications on post. reply comment or upvote then boom go back to doing my business. now I got lemmy and mastodon and i'm on it like a crack addict lmao!
I suppose I might just be a crazy person, but this seems as good a place to ask as any.
Any reason my upvotes (& downvotes for that matter) don't seem to stick? Just made an account and was scrolling thru this thread, upvoted some comments. And within like 2 seconds, the blue upvote highlight disappeared and the comment score went back to what it was before I had interacted. Same with downvotes.
i get this a lot randomly as well, on any platform. i assume it's just a bug, sometimes hours later it'll have worked on the server side, sometimes not. very annoying
It does seem to register ultimately even if seems to reverse on the front-end. In, other news how are you liking the switch over from reddit?
Trying to figure out the Lemmy system, it's a bit obtuse at first glance. But as someone mentioned in another thread, that may just be a feature not a bug.
Haven't deleted my account on reddit, but did replace the sync icon on my phone with jerboa. and just been avoiding old.reddit on the desktop. I feel like the kid in starship troopers stomping on bugs yelling "I'll do my part!" (minus the animal cruelty, of course)
I’ve found refuge in my kindle. I break the cycle by forcing myself to read books (trashy sci-fi novels mostly) But I DO want something to keep abreast of what’s going on further from my brain, and Lemmy has almost enough content to get a relatively neutral feed of information. Won’t take much to cross the watershed for me…
All of CJ Cherryh's stuff, Ghoster (Lee McKee), The heechee saga, all the old (60's through now) scifi short story anthologies, the Star of the guardians trilogy. I used to trawl used book stores (when that was a thing) with a backpack full of trade ins . Used the anthologies to find authors, etc etc. Something for something, What about you?
I probably don’t have much to share that you haven’t read already. I used to love some of the older stuff like Heinlein, the Riverworld series, Xanth novels, Robert Asprin, but I find (for me personally) a lot of that style/era just doesn’t hold up over time. Most of the newer sci-fi that I read feels like it takes itself way too seriously, which has its place but I’m not always in the mood for that. I have really enjoyed the Bobiverse audiobooks though.
I deleted Boost from my homescreen and added jerboa. Seems to be working for now. I've also been on YouTube more than I've ever been in my life. Thank the devs for revanced.
Ay, I think we may be the same person. I completely uninstalled boost from my phone and I'm using ReVanced twice as much as this time last week. I keep ending up clicking Reddit results in google though!
I still have like 1 or 2 communities I don't have replacements for (yet), so I plan to treat them as forums essentially. Just the specific subs I care about.
Basically I'm thinking I'll quit using the front page.
I fuckin like Lemmy man. It's kinda jank on the app (Jerboa) but it's in alpha and they're doing a great job fixing it and making it intuitive. It's fun to talk in the comments, threads are smaller but the chat is real. I wish there was more content but it'll come.
This is definitely not the right place but I'm not finding any answers elsewhere.
How can I "subscribe"to different communities on jerboa? Right now I've got the all but I'd like to find the equivalent of my favorite subreddits. If appreciate the help.
Then search any community you wish to join and view their sidebar and copy their !link.whatever and copy that,Then click into the magnifying glass on your instance in this case feddit.nl and make sure it is set to all when you search
I agree. It's just the right amount of jank that it's cute and kind of funny. Not the too much jank where I want to light my phone on fire and throw it screaming into the abyss.
I deleted Boost for Reddit (damn I'll miss that app) so I don't have the temptation. I also replaced my Reddit shortcut for the Reddark page and added a Fediverse folder.
Is exciting to see this place grow!
Boost for Reddit was the best 3P app and I'll fight anyone who says otherwise! Hopefully, we'll be seeing a Boost for Lemmy clone in the app store soon.
Eh, I thought Sync was pretty great, but then I left for some reason and ended up with Boost. It was pretty great, and I would totally go back to it if the dev decided to support Lemmy. I also remember liking Slide.
But if literally any of those third party apps support Lemmy, I'll pay a bit for them.
Dude same. Fucking adore Boost. The customizability is just so so good. I made it exactly the way I wanted and in the 5 years I used it I was able to switch phones and import my settings seamlessly. Best app.
I used reddit for exactly two things, memes and news. Lemmy has become my home for memes, and I downloaded a separate link aggregator for news. And with those two satisfied, I have no issues leaving behind reddit. It was just handy to have an all in one, and lemmy could definitely get there.
Yeah, once I replaced RiF with the Jerboa icon it's like muscle memory
Day 2 and I'm already used to jerboa/Lemmy/feddiverse whatever you wanna call it lol
I anticipated this and deleted my (3rd party) app icon on the 11th. Just migrated here today. This definitely fills the void for me. I'll only miss a select few subreddits.
I've done the same thing, but I think I'm finally used to not opening RiF. I just miss a few bigger communities, but otherwise Lemmy has been a fine alternative. Hopefully it continues to grow!
I just deleted reddit app and redreader since my sub is participating in the black out. Well be in here full time. I just hope Kenny doesn't become that place where everyone came over then officially moved to reddit app. This place is growing and give it some time and it will be bigger then reddit
I uninstall the app yesterday , I feel sad that reddit has becoming this shitty app it was a great experience since I join like 4 years ago butthanksg god we have lemmy now!
I had this problem too, when my account was on lemmy.ml. I recreated my account on my now-home instance, and everything has been so fast that I'm realizing how slow even old reddit has become. Lemmy caches your feed's posts on your home instance, so it's faster even for posts made on overloaded servers (though new comments coming in might be intermittent in that specific case).
I replaced the relay shortcut with jerboa so the muscle memory works. Now I'm just finding fun in Lemmy. It's there, you just have to look for it or make your own.
I moved my Apollo icon to a different location, and it helped the first couple times. But now… I’ve quickly replaced the habit with loading up Lemmy in my browser, haha
I deleted the official Reddit app and have only gone to r/tildes to check to see if they're offering invites again. I do hope to see a community to match learnprogramming and learnpython show up here.
Try that out and get back to me. I am also brand new to the Fediverse, kind of feels like the blind leading the blind. But I'm sure we will figure it out.
edit: just realized what you're asking. I know how to make a community link that can be accessed from any instance, but not a post link. I want to link the FAQ's from my instance so that anyone can read it, but I'm still not sure how.
It is, but it sort of depends on if you're on Lemmy to pass the time or to see if it's a platform you'd be able to migrate to if you choose to. I'm personally hoping that Lemmy becomes a viable alternative that can be my primary community board, and maybe return to Reddit only for the couple of communities that don't have suitable replacements yet.
I've been here for only two days and honestly? I'm not going back to reddit, even if everything works out great over there. I've got more sense of a community in lemmy in two days than what I felt in 7 years in reddit.
Yes the 12th through the 14th but come june 30th all third-party apps will die. and that's when the real traffic here will start. my sub has went dark for 2 days as well to protest.
Which is probably good, but unfortunately reddit will just replace the mods there and they'll just open it and back to how we were. Maybe of course that fortunate for the people that want to go back to Reddit
Hey! This post is not specifically related to the lemmy.world instance. From now on, posts such as these will be removed, in order for the community to stay on topic. However, as this is a highly upvoted post, I'll just lock it for now.
Yeah, same here. Lemmy sort of scratches the itch, but it's a big itch.
Communities will need time to grow again, but I'm hopeful and cautiously optimistic
Same. It reminds me of the early days of reddit with those small communities. Unless reddit goes back on its changes, more and more people will come here.
We might get some dope 3rd party apps and then we're golden.
One can only hope!
Off to a bigger start than reddit was, I think.
Any time you feel the urge to open reddit, make a post on Lemmy...
It might take a minute, but this will be the new exciting place if we keep at it.
I have had Reddit is Fun in the home buttons on my phone for the last 10 years. I pulled my phone out of my pocket an muscle memoried Reddit open like 20 times today.
I just switched Jerboa into that spot. It is crazy how much that changed things.

Yeah, I'll admit there is the excitement of having a new toy and figuring out how it all works. That takes away some of the boredom or time I'd be scrolling reddit.
Learning >>>> Doomscrolling.
Even if the "learning" is yet another Doomscroll app.
This blackout has highlighted the extent of my scrolling addiction.
Did the same thing, replacement is Jerboa!
It's inspired by Boost
Boost is what I have been using for years on android so this makes me super happy to hear. I'm gonna miss boost. I even donated to the dev a few times because I appreciated the app so much and he was very responsive when I wanted a new image hosting site to be supported within the app display.
@JackOfAllTraits @gimlithepirate great idea!
This worked lol.
Same. Def worked so far too.
Same here. Been using Mlem for iOS
Feels a bit like an early Apollo
This is the way.
I opened it twice today and was met with the ‘Reddit is killing Third-Party Applications’ and remembered I need to keep sticking it to the man.
Very much this. I've got an almost automatic habit of opening reddit when I'm bored and don't have much to do. After a couple of times of seeing that message, I've been searching for the lemmy counterparts for my favourite subs. Turns out a lot of them are getting some steam!
Yeah, I'm surprised at how many I'm finding, and how many are already seeing activity.
Same. I just joined like >12h ago, and already there is some activity in channels, that I couldn't find any discussion on a few hours ago.
I'm starting to use the word "sublems" instead of "channels" or "communities". Maybe it will catch on.
Sublems is an absolutely fantastic word that I am now adopting! E.g. "Hopefully soon Jerboa handles sublem links better in comments. That's something I loved about Relay"
Sublemmy?
And if you don’t see activity…Maybe think about creating one!
Same here. It is muscle memory still.
ive been spending anywhere from 1-4 hours a day on reddit for the past..13 years? probably the most ingrained habit i have. Broke that habit as of two days ago. Find a community that you like here and create post and talk. Only way around reddit for now. Give it a week and it will die down
The blackout is over after tonight, so I guess we'll see how things go then. I left because rif is shutting down on the 30th, so I figured I might as well cut the cord now. I deleted the app when the first sub I subbed to went dark, and I haven't looked back. Today is my third full day without it. lt would be a lot harder to say goodbye if they cared about having us.
I open Reddit way too often. Today I replaced my Reddit shortcut with Lemmy. Jerboa needs some refining but it'll do for now. Let's give it a go!
Jerboa has made the transition much smoother than I expected. Dark mode, card views and basic collapsing and font adjustment is such a relief.
The mobile browser version is already pretty satisfying though and feels almost like home as a long time RIF user.
Well here you go :-) I can't scroll "Look and feel" settings in Jerboa. It just hovers the labels instead of scrolling down.
Hmm, I had a similar problem earlier with the " settings" for default listing type (wanted to default to only stuff I've subscribed to), and then I reinstalled from Google Play (v0.0.33) and it worked. I'll see if I can reproduce it on the latest code.

Cool. It looks like there's a jerboa community here: [email protected]. I joined that one and intend to be a bit more active there as I try to learn how to develop Jerboa.
I've commented once already that I hope the influx of new users helps the development of Jerboa and/or encourages other developers to build on Lemmy.
It would be nice seeing Lemmy is Fun/Boost for Lemmy/Sync for Lemmy clones popping up.
I swear I've opened Reddit at least 4 times just out of habit before remembering.
I had to go and delete the app to stop me opening it!
Yeah I opened Reddit once just to see what it looked like today, then uninstalled the app.
Same 😄
Went to go get some errands done, and come back to find I have more Lemmy upvotes than I had karma in the last 10 years lol.
And you’re back, just as the cycle foretold.
I purposefully moved RIF off of my home screen. My stupid muscle memory kept tapping it every time my idle brain opened the phone. Trying out Jerboa as an app for lemmy at the moment.
Exactly my experience and what I ended up doing, put Jerboa on the spot I normally have RIF
I'm staying here, I'm done with Reddit.
I'm sorta looking forward to how lemmy/beehive/fediverse system improves. It's kinda exciting. Like sure things are a bit rough around the edges for now but so was reddit for a long time. Seems like there's a lot of people working to improve and make it better, and the communities are actually pretty big! I'm just so pumped about the way things are growing here, and think this federated donation-based model for a Reddit-like app is fantastic.
Yeah, I'm really liking this app. Works pretty smoothly and has great UI.
I got permabanned on reddit and twitter so i'm staying here too
probably dodged a bullet
Yeah, made moving here a little easier, i literally got banned because i forgot to turn on the NSFW tag on a post lol
Yeah I wish people would stop posting on Lemmy about Reddit and start posting something interesting instead
That will probably take a while. The only reason we’re here is because of reddit and spez being a greedy pigboy, so naturally that’s gonna be a topic of discussion for a while.
Once this place has a chance to build up a bit of an identity, I suspect that’ll go away.
I think that major subreedits also have a place on lemmy helps getting everything closer to the old normal
It's gonna be like this until the blackout is over. eventually we will move on from reddit
As the other community said, right now, we're just here because of spez being an asshole. Let this situation end and it'll normalize
all AI on this instance, we keep the reddit stuff in meta.
I rode my bike and did the dishes lol
At the same time?
What no Reddit for a day does to a person
When else am I supposed to do dishes?
That's talent.
I am talented
Just kidding, all the dishes were destroyed
I knew I'd do the same thing, so I removed the shortcut to Reddit on my phone and replaced it with Jerboa.
There's more of us lol
It's usually difficult for me to break habits, but right now I'm motivated by rage and contempt, which is making it a lot easier. And the fediverse is like a methadone drip to come down from the heroin-like addictiveness of endless information.
Tip: instead of opening reddit, just search "reddit" and read all the tech news articles shitting on Steve Huffman in diplomatic ways. It's very satisfying.
I thought I was addicted to Reddit, but compared to some of you I was totally fine all along! Hurrah!
For me, reddit was mostly something I browsed in a moment of boredom, micro breaks from work to clear my mind, or on the toilet.
Unlocking my phone and clicking on the app was one of those muscle-memory actions I wouldn't even think about. Especially when stoned..
I've unlocked my phone and clicked on the empty space in my home screen before I consciously processed what I had just done.
I've now replaced it with jerboa for lemmy haha.
Perspective may not fix my problems, but it sure makes me happy I'm not those guys.
At this point Ive completely replaced my addiction to reddit with one to lemmy
I replaced the reddit app shortcut on my phone with the Jerboa for Lemmy so that when, through sheer muscle memory, I try to open Reddit I open Lemmy instead.
Honestly, I hope I spend less time on Lemmy because I was on Reddit too damn much. Maybe this is exactly what I needed to break an unhealthy habit.
I just did this too. Only hope I have 😂
I've gotten more done today than I have in a long time. And spent plenty of time in the Fediverse too. I'm loving this so far.
Haha I got bit by that today. Had to use the wayback machine.
3 times today
Agree, it's happened to me too, answer is post the question on Lemmy instead! This time those ass hats can't take it away.
True, this is our chance to pull ourselves back from the lazy habits of the last 20 years or so!
That ought to get the general public's attention. Spez really stuck his foot in it this time.
I kept doing this and finally just moved the Jerboa for Lemmy app to where I had RIF and it's been working great.
That's what I did too. It's not quite the same. But muscle memory doesn't betray me at least.
This did the trick for me as well
Jerboas a really nice app. Very customizable like RIF
I removed the app from my home screen and that made things easier.
I replaced it with Jerboa. Muscle memory will help :P
Just realized how many users I've tagged to remember encounters with on Boost. Good and bad, helped me steer clear of a few trolls.
Will have to ask for that functionality from Jerb. Highly key.
I am getting more replies here and things feel overall more active than what I have seen on reddit in years. The fire has brought the engagement out in people and its a blast.
If you lack something to post, shitpost, for the cause.
Absolutely agree. The signal-to-noise ratio here is just incredible.
Aye captain.
That were first two days here, but now I'm invested, people started to share more and suddenly i catch myself scrolling Lemmy for 15 minutes instead of working
Amen. Half the battle is actually contributing/replying for engagement metrics, so here I am :)
I’m currently doing both of those, but neither suit my preferred Reddit workflow.
I want to see fresh posts from across the entire fediverse. I don’t care about things I’m subscribed to.
Safari iOS will auto refresh the “hot” page and it’s unreadable because it’s constantly scrolling as new posts are loaded in.
Mlem doesn’t allow you sort All posts by Hot at all :(
You can change default sorting in Lemmy settings, but i agree that constant refreshing is frustrating :(
Yeah, I don’t even mind manually changing the filters to get what I want. I just literally can’t read while posts are flooding in.
It will get better. Tooling will evolve as users join.
I used rif, so I'm just done with reddit now. I'm not using any other app, and I refuse to use a browser. Bye bye, reddit.
@wheresyourshoe @CascadeDismayed RIP Rif i'm going to miss the notifications on new post.
Imma try it on desktop soon.
i get this a lot randomly as well, on any platform. i assume it's just a bug, sometimes hours later it'll have worked on the server side, sometimes not. very annoying
Cool beans, thanks for responding.
Won’t take much to cross the watershed for me…
I love trashy sci-fi! Any recommendations?
Robert Asprin is a new one for me, I'll have to look around, thanks!
Thanks, I’ll check it out!
Number one reason why I froze the Sync for Reddit app (with all the pain in my heart because I fucking love that app).
Lol I've clicked it so many times while it's paused. Need to switch my app locations
Just delete it from your phone
I still have like 1 or 2 communities I don't have replacements for (yet), so I plan to treat them as forums essentially. Just the specific subs I care about.
Basically I'm thinking I'll quit using the front page.
I'm on my computer, so that doesn't work quite as well.
Block it through your hosts file.
I got the hang of lemmy. Very simple. I've deleted all instances of reddit on my phone and won't use it on desktop. I love this site
I fuckin like Lemmy man. It's kinda jank on the app (Jerboa) but it's in alpha and they're doing a great job fixing it and making it intuitive. It's fun to talk in the comments, threads are smaller but the chat is real. I wish there was more content but it'll come.
Idk man it's cool I dig it.
It'll get there. I'm hoping some of the 3P reddit app devs switch over; I'm gonna miss Boost.
I'm on the app right now and I find the jank kind of charming.
This is definitely not the right place but I'm not finding any answers elsewhere.
How can I "subscribe"to different communities on jerboa? Right now I've got the all but I'd like to find the equivalent of my favorite subreddits. If appreciate the help.
Search for them (Second icon from the left on the bottom), and there should be a "subscribe" button on the page that comes up if you click a result
Thank you for the reply! Super helpful. They've also added more intuitive icons now!
No problem :)
Easiest way currently is to use the Lemmy community browser
Then search any community you wish to join and view their sidebar and copy their !link.whatever and copy that,Then click into the magnifying glass on your instance in this case feddit.nl and make sure it is set to all when you search
Thank you for the reply! People have been far nicer over at Lemmy so far!
I agree. It's just the right amount of jank that it's cute and kind of funny. Not the too much jank where I want to light my phone on fire and throw it screaming into the abyss.
Also it's only 2mb which is absolutely NUTS
What's the news aggregator you downloaded?
Inoreader for android. I can't really compare it to any others as it works well enough that I haven't needed to try others.
Thanks a bunch, that looks awesome!
i just replaced the Reddick icon with lemmy
Yeah, once I replaced RiF with the Jerboa icon it's like muscle memory Day 2 and I'm already used to jerboa/Lemmy/feddiverse whatever you wanna call it lol
I anticipated this and deleted my (3rd party) app icon on the 11th. Just migrated here today. This definitely fills the void for me. I'll only miss a select few subreddits.
Same, RIF will be dead soon once the API changes take effect. Might as well rip the bandaid off now.
Lemmy has replaced everything reddit was for me, so I just deleted the app
I've done the same thing, but I think I'm finally used to not opening RiF. I just miss a few bigger communities, but otherwise Lemmy has been a fine alternative. Hopefully it continues to grow!
Seems we share a braincell..
I just deleted reddit app and redreader since my sub is participating in the black out. Well be in here full time. I just hope Kenny doesn't become that place where everyone came over then officially moved to reddit app. This place is growing and give it some time and it will be bigger then reddit
I just put the gerboa app in the same position as reddit so muscle memory opens to Lemmy now.
Makes sense 😃 what app did you use before Lemmy?
I swore to myself I wouldn't go there during the blackout, and that I would use that time to get better acquainted with Lemmy, kbin and squabbles.
But fuck if I'm not dying to go there and see what's happening. If the Revenge of the Admins has already begun or what.
I uninstall the app yesterday , I feel sad that reddit has becoming this shitty app it was a great experience since I join like 4 years ago butthanksg god we have lemmy now!
I killed my 15 year old account yesterday. Looking through the history though there wasn't anything to be nostalgic about - I talked a lot of shit
Greetings fellow shitposter. I dont know why but it is still hilarious to rile up random people about ridiculous things
I moved my Apollo icon off the home page so I would quit accidentally click it out of habit.
I removed RIF from my home screen and put tildes and Lemmy on there instead.
What's tildes for?
Reddit alternative, it's probably the most reddit-esque of the Rexxit alternatives.
Also a reddit alternative
biggest headache for me is waiting for lemmy to load! nothing more aggravating than drip feed internet
oh and for some reason it works on my desktop in safari but not my laptop in safari. whattt
Really? Lemmy loads instantly for me. Weird.
Are you comnected to one of the more popular instances? Mine was the same way until I switched.
I just moved from lemmy.ml to lemmy.world made a huge difference. I think lemmy.ml is getting abused.
I've set the allowed screentime of the boost app to 0 this week that way I don't open reddit accidentally.
I believe in you. We can do it.
Gosh when Apollo goes away I'm not gonna know what to do with my phone anymore, might as well just toss it away
I replaced the relay shortcut with jerboa so the muscle memory works. Now I'm just finding fun in Lemmy. It's there, you just have to look for it or make your own.
i thought i was the only one doing that
I keep searching for it on my phone before realising I deleted the app 🙃
I deleted the app last week so I wouldn’t accidentally visit there.
I'm actually doing my homework on time for once... Maybe I should go play minecraft or something so I don't raise the expectations
@gimlithepirate habits can be challenging to change
For real... Its hard to break the habit of typing in Reddit into the search bar.
You've gone this whole time without a bookmark??
Same, but I don't actually open reddit, I just swipe away all the notifications for it
Lol I never had notifications on for reddit. That would feel so invansive.
I turn off notifications for everything. My screen time for them go way down
My most recent notification was from 16 hours ago. Looks like all of my subscribed subs have gone dark!
I think it's a good idea to log out, outherwise they still count you in I think...
If you make it I will join! Or I can make it
I can join as well!
also this https://lemmy.world/post/79354
When I click your link I get stuck on the wrong server or something and can’t comment, any advice?
I think you have to enter the community in your url bar like this:
your.instance/c/[email protected]
which I think in your case would be:
discuss.tchncs.de/c/[email protected]
Try that out and get back to me. I am also brand new to the Fediverse, kind of feels like the blind leading the blind. But I'm sure we will figure it out.
edit: just realized what you're asking. I know how to make a community link that can be accessed from any instance, but not a post link. I want to link the FAQ's from my instance so that anyone can read it, but I'm still not sure how.
If i navigate back to the same post from tchncs.de the URL is https://discuss.tchncs.de/post/43522
Note that this isnt the same number, it bears no resemblance to your URL
So, I am not the only one doing this. Lol
Isn't the whole Reddit outage only for a couple days?
It’s not just an outage, it’s a boycotting that happened to cause an actual outage. My outage is indefinite!
My outrage is indefinite
It is, but it sort of depends on if you're on Lemmy to pass the time or to see if it's a platform you'd be able to migrate to if you choose to. I'm personally hoping that Lemmy becomes a viable alternative that can be my primary community board, and maybe return to Reddit only for the couple of communities that don't have suitable replacements yet.
I've been here for only two days and honestly? I'm not going back to reddit, even if everything works out great over there. I've got more sense of a community in lemmy in two days than what I felt in 7 years in reddit.
I do have echos of google+ with a great community. But that was backed by Google, Lemmy is federated and won't be killed.
Yes the 12th through the 14th but come june 30th all third-party apps will die. and that's when the real traffic here will start. my sub has went dark for 2 days as well to protest.
Wow thanks for the heads up
A lot of the subs I follow are closed indefinitely.
Which is probably good, but unfortunately reddit will just replace the mods there and they'll just open it and back to how we were. Maybe of course that fortunate for the people that want to go back to Reddit
I set my app timeout to zero

Hey! This post is not specifically related to the lemmy.world instance. From now on, posts such as these will be removed, in order for the community to stay on topic. However, as this is a highly upvoted post, I'll just lock it for now.
